Wheaton Regional Park, MD. With little time to setup for QOC's opening meet this Sunday, I tried to check control locations and layout streamers for some of the controls which I thought would be the hardest to place out, site-unseen, on Sunday morning. I started with one of the harder ones. The map showed the woods there to be open with a trail nearby. However, there were all sorts of downed trees nearby and no trail. I had trouble knowing where I was and kept losing my place on the map. Then next one went better but the white woods shown on the map there turned out to be light green to green with seasonal undergrowth and decaying branches. The next control should have been easy with a very solid attack point less than 50m away but it was thick getting through a green portion of woods and again the white woods were really green. Going out of there to confirm my location, I did something weird and ended up on the wrong trail. Two more controls went similarly before I got onto a better track. It was rather hot and humid for starting after 9:30pm with no breeze so I felt very fatigued the rest of the way. Probably being sick and not sleeping enough contributed to the difficulties. As thick as the woods were, the hurricane rains expected should make it harder.
