slept:6.25 weight:172.5lbs (sick)

Shoveling snow and ice off the driveway with Max. I only cut a path for people to walk on. This was Max's first time out (in the U.S.A.) in snow this deep 2-3 inches. He wanted to walk a bunch after we finished but didn't know what to do with it. The glazed-over snow was too hard to do much with and it even supported my weight.

Orienteering (Streamer-O) 46:38 [3] * 1.0 km (46:38 / km)
spiked:5/5c slept:10.0 weight:172.5lbs (sick)

QOC: Lake Farifax, VA. This was the first use of Lake Fairfax Park for orienteering. Since I am still sick (slowly getting better) I just did the Streamer-O with Max. We started with Max running and me walking down the grassy field but Max quickly wanted to be carried at the bottom. After the second control, he got more fussy and just didn't know what he wanted. He cried a bunch and it seemed everything I did was wrong for him. He wanted mommy and wanted to go inside. To hurry getting back, the tune from the Lone Ranger rescued me. Max laughed up on my shoulders as I tried to mimic a gallop along. I got sweaty but Max kept wanting to hear the tune which he did until we finished.

It was a shame I didn't get to run with everyone else. Lake Fairfax has a lot of old memories for me. My parents often brought relatives, friends, my sisters and I there for picnics, train rides and the pool. I've run through the park from Great Falls to Reston. The park is also arguably the place where I ran my fastest race ever. I ran an 8-mile trail race here in 1980, home from college for Thansgiving weekend. I finished second in 40:40. A few days earlier I had run a Turkey Trot 5-miler road race at 25:25--the same 5:05/mile pace but the Lake Farifax course was hillier and longer. It was soon after this that I stopped running competitively, only a sophmore, because running was dominating my life.
