Running (Street & Trail) 16:53 [3] 2.29 mi (7:22 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., to Old Georgetown Rd. to Johnson Ave. to Heamsteadt Ave. to McKinley Ave. to Garfield St. to Roosevelt. Ave. to Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. While Max was at a birthday party, I went for a short run in some light rain. The heavier stuff came later. We had to detour around a downed tree blocking Falls Rd. when I drove Max back.

Running (Street & Trail) 18:06 [2] 1.33 mi (13:37 / mi)

From Northfield Rd., I ran along side Max again as he practiced riding his bicycle. We went to Bradley Hills ES and back again. He wanted to play tag and my self-inflicted handicap was to tag him with my nose. Later we tried to call Peggy for a birthday congratulation.

Running (Other) 20:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (3:00 @3) + (2:00 @4) 1.91 mi (10:28 / mi)

Max hadn't ridden on his own bicycle since last year. We got all set to try a ride together when I realized before we really left the house that he had more or less lost the skill to ride on his own. I think the larger bicycle we got for him after he learned to ride on the small one (it was too small) last year, was a bit too large for him to comfortably start and stop. I changed clothes and shoes and ran along side of him to help him re-learn the skill. I think he was too tired. His focus wasn't there. He would get distracted by the slightest thing and wasn't the least bit worried about looking away or falling since I was holding him up. Giving him freedom, I had to make several close saves. As we got to the flatter land approaching Bradley Elementary, his focus improved and we rode completely around that school. Of course, there was an obligatory stop at the playground--Max played tetherball with some others. I don't think he really had done that before. He rode back home almost completely by himself. I helped him when stopping/starting at intersections and uphills.

Mostly laziness today, compounded by an evening with Max at Dave & Busters, and rain. At D&B Max won beu coup tickets by hitting a rainbow boat on a torpedo game we found.

Calisthenics (General) 2:00 [3]
weight:178.5lbs

45 situps. I intended to ride on rollers but I realized that I hadn't yet retrieved my road bike from my locker at the metro station. I had left it there on Friday when we went out for dinner and errands after work. I had been unable to fix the broken spoke on my commuter bicycle since the spoke I purchased turned out to be too short by a few millimeters.

Running (Street & Trail) 31:23 [3] 4.28 mi (7:20 / mi)
slept:5.7 weight:178lbs

Washington, D.C. I did a variation of the loop I call the Memorial Tour. From 14th & Independence Ave., SW, to Lincoln Memorial Circle via the Reflecting Pool, across Memorial Bridge to the Mt. Vernon Trail, to the 14th St. Bridge,. to Main Ave. to D St., SW, to 13th St., SW, to C. St. SW. My legs felt sore and stiff during the day but when I got out, I felt a spring in them. It was Spring after all--all 70F of it! I set out thinking I would go shorter but knew early that I'd be okay going longer. I didn't want to overdo things. I also wanted to keep my pace down but at the first mile I was 7:12 and wasn't trying much. There were bull dozers in the dried-out Reflecting Pool basin and mounds of dirt. The DC WWI memorial was gettting a makeover too. Most of the contstruction around Ladybird Johnson Park on the west side of the Potomac has been improved at least for the trail. I got passed after getting onto the 14th bridge going back across the Potomac River. The tall guy who passed me must have been going in the mid-6 minute/mile range.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 5:30:00 intensity: (4:30:00 @1) + (42:00 @2) + (18:00 @3)
slept:7.0 weight:180lbs

Cabin John Regional Park, MD. From Tuckerman La., I moved quickly between the creek and I-270 to the northern reaches of the park. The uplands went quickly. I found a few rare boulders and some nice pits. The lowlands were tricky with lots of features close together but with thicker vegetation to work around. One gully/stream was completly invisible on an otherwise very good aerial photo. Nearby ditches and a low broken stone wall all converged. In the extreme north of the park the vegetation gets it's thickest but there I mapped an old road and an old car rusting away on it. Crossing to map the west side of the creek for the first time, near Goya Rd. I found many more ditches, gullies and some spur trails. I've got about a day more to go before I'll finish the parts of the park north of Tuckerman Rd. After finishing in the park, I took care of some more thick vegetation by sawing and clipping it up in our back yard.
