2 PM

Running warm up/down (Trail) 16:58 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (6:58 @3) 1.78 mi (9:32 / mi) +59m 8:38 / mi
slept:8.0 weight:177lbs

Patuxent River Park, MD. From Riverside Field to the Day 2 start area of the NJROTC Championship. It was 36 F and breezy. I started without gloves and wondered if I was making a mistake but my hands felt okay during the run.

Orienteering (Foot) 45:18 intensity: (33:18 @3) + (12:00 @4) *** 5.0 km (9:04 / km) +210m 7:29 / km
spiked:10/10c

Patuxent River Park, MD. Vetting of the Day 2 NJROTC Championship Green course. I moved slowly at first but picked up the pace. There was a mix of less than nice and nice woods but overall, this was fun. I hit everything pretty well even though there were just streamers out.
3 PM

Running (Trail and Terrain) 16:06 [3] 1.55 mi (10:23 / mi) +50m 9:27 / mi

Patuxent River Park, MD. From Riverside Field, to the start of Day 2 of the NJROTC Championship. I thought I'd check the time difference in going more directly vs. taking trails and roads. It was almost the same.

Orienteering (Foot) 30:11 [2] 2.1 mi (14:22 / mi) +36m 13:39 / mi
spiked:4/4c

Patuxent River Park, MD. Vetting of the first part of the Day 2 Yellow Course for the NJROTC Championship. This would have been good to do earlier. I wasn't running for speed and paused along the way to check various things.
4 PM

Orienteering (Foot) 1:05:36 [3] *** 4.31 mi (15:13 / mi) +109m 14:07 / mi
spiked:14/15c (sick)

Patuxent River Park, MD. Vetting a hybrid of the Day 2 Orange and Brown courses for the NJROTC Championship. I was getting tired with heavy legs during this. With this being a hybrid and coming at some controls from other than the intended direction, the technical difficulty was above what most would think of as Orange. I felt pretty comfortable with the temperature but by the end of the day, I had caught a cold.

Running (Trail) 45:26 intensity: (35:26 @3) + (10:00 @4) 5.84 mi (7:47 / mi) +28m 7:40 / mi
slept:5.75 weight:179lbs

Starting on the Rock Creek Trail near the synagogue parking lot near East-West Hwy., I ran up the Rock Creek Trail to Mile Mark 7, then back a tiny way to the Ken-Gar parking area. It was in the upper 30s F. Peggy and Max met me at Ken-Gar so that we could do another round of getting dinner and birthday presents for Max's friends. I was ready to go another mile or so but had mis-estimated the distance. I thought I was running pretty well but it was slightly slower than 2 nights back. There was some mud and standing water on the paved trail, but not a lot. I'm glad I got finished when I did since it got windy later in the evening.

Calisthenics (General) 2:00 [3]
weight:179lbs (rest day)

Peggy's brother Paul visited us this evening somewhat unexpectedly; a pleasant surprise after a sort of crummy day, but it took some time. Had I put more into it, I would have run late or at least cycled on rollers. My knee has been giving some warning signs so I opted for a rest day. 45 situps.

Bicycling (Commute) 12:30 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (2:30 @3) 1.5 mi (8:20 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:179lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Arlington Rd. with Max on his bike, then to the Bethesda Metro StatIon.
7 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 7:51 [2] 1.45 mi (5:25 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Arlington Rd. to pickup Max's bicycle, then to Northfield Rd. It was breezy and felt colder than the temperature would indicate.
11 PM

Running (Street & Trail) 56:10 intensity: (40:00 @3) + (16:10 @4) 7.28 mi (7:43 / mi) +118m 7:21 / mi

I'd intended to run after work but had I tried that, I would not have seen any family this evening. I ate and got out later.

From Northfield Rd. to Old Georgetown Rd. to W. Cedar Rd. to the Elmhirst Trail, to the Rock Creek Trail, to the Kensington Pkwy., to Connecticutt Ave. to the Georgetown Branch Trail, Pearl St. to East-West Hwy. to Wisconsin Ave. to Old Georgetown Rd., to Huntington Pkwy. to Custer Rd. to Northfield Rd. I was contemplating some things about the upcoming NJROTC event at Patuxent this weekend as I ran. I wasn't paying attention to the pace and thought I might be behind my pace on this route last week. There were some places where mostly dried flood mud covered the pavement in the dark parts of Rock Creek Park. I climbed out of the park smoothly and on the Kensington Pkwy. I saw the same guy walking his dog that I had seen last week on the same road at around the same time; this time I frightened him less. Finishing-up, my quads were tired. I tried then to focus on running form and did okay with an overall faster pace than last week. It was about 36 F out but the earlier winds had died down.

Bicycling (Rollers) 30:10 [3]
slept:6.4 weight:179lbs

Spinning and watching a movie. I would have like to have gone for a run but the timing wasn't so good for that.

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 1:03:42 [3] 7.5 mi (8:30 / mi) +150m 8:00 / mi
slept:5.5 weight:179.5lbs

From 14th & Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C. Independence Ave. to the Reflecting Pool, to the Lincoln Memorial, to the Rock Creek Trail, along the Georgetown Waterfront to the Capital Crescent Trail (CCT), to the Glover Archbold Trail, up to the Tenleytown Metro Station via Van Ness St. and Wisconsin Ave., then to the Friendship Heights Metro Station at the DC/MD border (Western Ave. & Wisconsin Ave.). I was surprised somewhere around my first mile to find that I was running in the 7:20/mile pace. I didn't think I was going fast but I think that the long run on Saturday got me used to putting out a level of effort that combined with being rested and fresh, and on pavement, made me run well. It had been a while since I'd felt pretty good running so that was unexpected and nice. It was 36 F and at dusk starting off. By the time I left Georgetown, I needed and turned on my headlamp and my speed slowed. Initially the Glover Archbold Trail was empty but I did eventually see several dog walkers. Some of the ground was soft from dampness but there was almost no mud. I stumbled occasionally on rocks that I wasn't comprehending the size of due to shadows. Hitting the streets again on Wisconsin Ave., I felt pretty good. I was at the Tenleytown Metro Station at 56:56 and went on. The last bit had more downhill and I ran quicker.

Bicycling (Rollers) 30:06 [3]
slept:8.0 weight:176lbs

Spinning on rollers and watching a movie. Though I was putting in what seemed a normal amount of effort into it, the spinning was a little slow for a long while but got easier. I worked up a good sweat.
