Bicycling (Trail) 1:18:00 [2] 8.0 mi (9:45 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:180lbs

From the Lake Frank parking off of Avery Rd., to the Rock Creek Trail, via the Lake Frank dam, then north to Lake Needwood, around the lake counterclockwise, then back. I rode with Max and his friend Alice while other QOC people were doing a compass and pace training exercise setup by David Onkst. The temperatures were warmer and more humid than I'm used to but nothing like the summer heat that will come. A nice breeze was going so it was really nice in the shade. I ran into Amber and Sarah at Lake Needwood--they'd gone to the wrong location for the training. I think running would have been better for me; either running the training or along side of Max and Alice, though I wasn't sure before going whether or not I'd be able to keep up with Max and Alice on bicycle while I was running. Earlier in the day I was doing some masonry work so I was already a little tired.

Bicycling (Commute) 10:48 intensity: (8:48 @1) + (2:00 @3) 1.5 mi (7:12 / mi)
slept:6.75 weight:178.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., to Arlington Rd. with Max on his bike, then to the Bethesda Metro station. Max was grumpy about riding this morning but better by the time we got there.

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 46:43 [3] 5.59 mi (8:21 / mi) +72m 8:02 / mi

From Arlington Hospital, Arlington, VA, 16th Street N to N Glebe Rd., to the Custis Trail, to Key Street, to M Street, NW, Washington, D.C., to 28th St., to Olive St., through Rock Creek Park to P Street NW, to 20th St., to the DuPont Circle Metro Station at Q St., NW. In Arlington, I ran along some streets and trails that I hadn't run down in a couple of decades; an old hangout from the 80s. My run was in steady rain the whole way. I enjoyed being able to run downhill after work for once since most of my commute runs are running uphill toward Bethesda. I was running with a full pack and that slowed me, despite the negative elevation. There were plenty of cyclists riding in the rain, and a few other runners too. The sidewalk in Georgetown was busy. I dripped puddles on the metro train afterward, drew stares, and cleared out people around me. On the metro train, there were also 4 wet cyclists and their bikes; the most I'd seen at one time.

Bicycling (Commute) 8:00 [2] 1.45 mi (5:31 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station, to Arlington Rd. to pickup Max's bike, then to Northfield Rd. Having cooled-off from running, I realized how much strain running with the extra weight was. My calves were dead going up the escalator. I was glad that it was still not cold riding home since the rain was going steadily. With wet brakes, I had to go slower to be safe.

Bicycling (Commute) 44:13 intensity: (9:21 @1) + (19:52 @3) + (15:00 @4) 12.5 mi (3:32 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:179.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD with Max on his bike, then to 12th and C St. SW, Washington, D.C. After leaving Bethesda, things went fast. I was easily hitting 24 mph so I figured there must be a tailwind. I almost caught up to a guy who I kept seeing all the way to Georgetown but I didn't try too hard for fear of wearing myself out. He slowly pulled away, especially when after the Dalecarlia reservoir and the water treatment plant, I headed more into the east. A headwind was coming from the east but it wasn't bad. The temperatures were cool and comfortable.
8 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 45:16 [3] 12.2 mi (3:43 / mi)

From 12th St & Independence Ave., SW, in Washington, D.C. to Arlington Rd., Bethesda, MD to pick-up Max's bicycle, then to Northfield Rd. I left work late so I first had to ride through the courtyard and the building. I moved fast on Independence Ave. I was still quick but more steady through Georgetown, and on the Capital Crescent Trail. Winds were mostly coming from behind me. It was more or less dark when I got home, just before 9pm.

Running (Street & Trail) 34:14 [3] 4.4 mi (7:47 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:181lbs

Washington, D.C. From 14th & Independence Ave., SW, down The Mall along Independence Ave. and the Reflecting Pool to the Lincoln Memorial, to Ohio Dr. to the Rock Creek Trail, to Calvert St., to the Woodley Park/Zoo Metro Station. It was about 79 F after the rain storms but things were drying-up. I felt soreness in my quads initially which was odd given how little I'd been running lately. This went away. I felt pretty heavy both in body, and in my legs from cycling. The national condom wrapping was going up over the scaffolding on the Washington Monument. I was fairly slow going up the hill at the end.
