Note

South of the Border, SC, off of I-95. We stopped in South Carolina at the NC/SC border. This roadside retail store/complex, famous for the many billboards leading to it, was a childhood stop place for me in the 1970s. Much before then it was started in SC, when NC had liquor prohibition laws. The proprietor, a relatively liberal Jew in a conservative area, had two Mexican workers, one actually named Pedro (name of the statue in the pic). Despite what seems to be political incorrectness from today's POV, the owner hired a lot of minority workers. He even stared down the KKK with a shotgun when they showed up to harass the minority's.

Charleston, SC; near the airport. From International Blvd. to Darius Rucker Blvd. to Colesium Dr. parking lot to Tony Way Blvd. to W. Montague St., to International Blvd. It was really humid out and in the mid 80s F. A breeze helped a little. I was still full from dinner in the old downtown area; enjoyable on Market St. and on the water, but even hotter while we were walking.

Note

I'd gotten back to Bethesda, MD after midnight. I worked from home through lunch, and unit was time to go pickup Max from Annappoplis, MD. From there Peggy drove us to Petersburg, VA. It rained most of the way and we say a lot of lightning.

Note

After a long time at work, I decided late to take the day off. I had to get ready for a work trip too.

Running (Street & Trail) 18:35 [3] 2.15 mi (8:39 / mi)

From Northfield Rd. I ran up to Custer Rd., to Wilson La., to Exeter Rd. to Glenbrook Rd. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to the NIH grounds, to Maple Ridge Rd. to Georgetown Pike, to Huntington Pkwy., to Custer Rd. to Northfield Rd. I was slow but surprisingly not too affected by the long run yesterday. I felt like I was going faster.

Seneca Regional Park, VA. I did a loop around the park, then ran the Potamac Heritage Trail to Algonkian Regional Park, VA, and then made my way back. I'd been meaning to run this section of the trail for along while and thought of running it many times as I've been driving home from visiting my mom. I was able to fit it in today though Samantha was waiting for me when I got home (Peggy had to go to sleep early). The trail was a bit muddy in the low places and especially getting through the Trump golf course (I lost the trail in there on the way out, due to poor signage). I was slow from the beginning. The early trails were up and down and whomever made them didn't get the concept of contouring to get across a reentrant or hill. The uplands were surprisingly open. I'd like to map them for an SSS event if I could only get the time. I guess the area has opened up from earlier explorations that I'd heard from others. I did run into one spot heading to Algonkian, where I was on the wrong trail and it ended. Cliffs prevented normal progress so I had backtracked walking up and across a steep hillside on an informal trail.
