Orienteering (Terrain) 2:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (40:00 / mi)

Prince William Forest, VA. From the Pine Grove area and after others completed the morning vetting, I walked around on trails and the open forest to photograph competitors for the QOC Royal Romp event.

Orienteering (Control Pickup) 2:10:00 [1] 2.5 mi (52:00 / mi)

Prince Williams Forest, VA - Control pickup after the QOC Royal Romp event. It had turned colder. Thought the snow was mostly stopped, there was occasional light rain. I wore extra clothes and managed to stay comfortable but I was slow. It took a while to untie the flags from the stands. I had to take off my gloves at each one, then work the knots undone. The area was a bit hilly and my arms sometimes got tired. A few of the stands were the heavier plastic and metal stakes.

Orienteering (Vetting) 53:32 [3] 3.07 mi (17:26 / mi) +106m 15:45 / mi

Prince William Forest, VA. Vetting Orange course controls for the QOC Royal Romp at the Oakridge Campground. This was just past dawn and near freezing. The navigation was not so easy, especially for Orange course competitors. I got off track and lost contact with the map in a few places, but I was able to correct pretty well.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 2:40:19 [3] 4.76 mi (33:41 / mi) +153m 30:37 / mi

Prince William Forest, VA. Pine Grove. I had to set out a bunch of mostly Yellow and White controls on stands. There were too many to carry at once and to make matters worse, when rushing out of the Oakridge area, I'd brought the flags and stands but left the controls. Others brought them to me. As I got going, some flags had gotten removed from the stands, so all I had to put out were the stands. I got these on the second loop. Though several had offered to help, I wanted to get this done myself. Some streamers were on trails and had been removed. I knew where the controls needed to go. It got late enough on the second loop that Ted Good came along with me to help carry stuff and make it faster. Even then, it got dark on us. I had a small headlamp ready for that, and we got an IHop dinner later.

spiked:3/4c

Prince William Forest, VA. From the Scenic Drive NW of Pine Grove. Setting out controls and stands. I was getting tired and more sloppy. Holding the stands and a bag of control contributed to not reading the map so carefully.

Running (Street & Trail) 34:26 [3] 3.4 mi (10:08 / mi) +61m 9:36 / mi
slept:6.25 weight:201.1lbs

From Northfield Rd., to Old Georgetown Rd., via Greenwich Park, to W. Cedar Ln., to the Bethesda Trolley Trail along Rockville Pike and up to Maple Ridge Rd., to Old Georgetown Rd., to Huntington Pkwy., to Custer Rd., to Northfield Rd. It was in the mid 40's and I ran into a headwind most of the first mile starting out. I was feeling tired early in that first mile too. Going downhill on W. Cedar Ln. and returning was better even though the winds didn't push me back much (I was on the leeward side of trees and hill returning). I had started to get too warm for a short while. Being too warm didn't last. I was happy to keep my hat and gloves on the whole way.
