JK Relay - Mens Short 1st Leg - Braunton Burrows

Felt ok after yeserday, a bit sluggish 1st km but then pretty good. Fastest m/km of the weekend.
----------
Nav was really good, much easier at 1:10. First 1st leg I've ever run, good fun. Stayed cool at the start and from about 20th in the pack hit the furthest gaffled 1st control first. Lots of headless chicken M16/18s well ignored. From there was gradually picking off people ~8th at spec. 6th at finish.

Mistakes ~0:45 mins
(3) (0:15) - Bit distracted, didn't read ahead enough.
(12) (0:30) - Undershot a bit - c.circle covered important contour line

Pos (on gaffle): 5/40
Pos (team): 18/54
Winner: (on gaffle) P. Pickering - 23min (+2min +7%)

JK Classic - M21E - Braunton Burrows

My running was good but I really tired around 80-90mins. Probably lost ~5 places to this alone. LAMM training will improve stamina.
----------
This was the one I was looking forward to. Great fun navigating on the dunes. At 1:15 was hard to read detail. Dealt with this well to start with but as I tired, concentration waned. Good race with Ian - he was behind me after error at c6 but didn't pass until c23 and was stronger at the end. Overall pretty pleased, getting nearer 2hrs. Did the long legs well, where many others made mistakes. Middle section was good.

Mistakes ~7:00 mins
(5) (0:30) - Bit of hesitation - undershoot
(6) (3:00) - Stupid error into what looked like easier/flatter area should have taken more care/better bearing. Bigger than mapped marshes didn't help
(9) (0:30) - Drifted left bit distracted by others
(23) (1:30) - Trying to find right knoll in a circle with 2 knolls, 2 hills & 2 spurs (!)
(26) (0:30) - Tired - didn't read detail - circled to find control
(29) (0:30) - Tired - didn't read detail - circled to find control
(30) (0:30) - Tired - really didn't understand the map here

Pos: 56/66
Winner: C. Waaler Kaas - 82min (+43min +52%)

Orienteering race (Cookworthy) 46:30 [4] *** 5.5 km (8:27 / km) +125m 7:36 / km
spiked:18/23c shoes: Inov8 Flyroc 310 III

Knee - 1 - No pain
R Ankle - 1 - No pain
Shins - 1 - No pain
L Knee - 2 - Didn't turn it - think I jarred it, bit sore after race

JK Middle - M21E - Cookworthy Forest

Ran pretty hard but the ankle deep mud everywhere was energy sapping and was pretty knackered by the end.
----------
Annoying mistake at c1 turned a very good run into a pretty average one. Never had a great run on a middle race but this was pretty good apart from the early mistake.

Mistakes ~4:30 mins
(1) (3:30) - Not convinced a clearing was as big as was mapped, this led me to think I'd gone further than I had and I mis read a block of (v. dense) white as light green. Circled and went back uphill to relocate
(5) (0:15) - Racing Scott and both drifted right
(6) (0:15) - Hesitated and undershot in the parallel streams
(15) (0:30) - Was racing a couple of others (and taking slightly better routes) but distracted a bit and all drifted left to wrong rootstock

Physically felt fine, probably could have started a bit faster
----------
Nav was good and controlled, couple of small errors in trickier old college area. Good race.

(11) (0:20) - Didn't read ahead enough - small dead end
