Orienteering race 1:25:15 [5] *** 4.9 km (17:24 / km) +330m 13:01 / km
ahr:120 max:158 spiked:13/14c

Long brown course at Pacheco Pass. Actually ran 6.6 km, plus another 1.6 km walk to the start. Pretty good run, except for control 9. For some reason I thought it was much higher than it was, and ended up 6 or 7 steep contours needlessly, and lost about 5 minutes. Since I was the first runner, could not find the flag for #10 despite traversing what I knew was the right boulder several times. Tried to call the course setter and tell him about it when I noticed the flag, pole and EP unit lying in the deep grass about 1.5 m from the boulder. It must have gotten blown away.

My legs were really tired after thrashing through the tall grass for 2 days in a row. I think this was the first O event that it really was a very significant disadvantage to being the first starter. No elephant tracks, plus it was very fatiguing going through knee high grass for much of the course.

Ended up 2nd in M70, though. Rich Parker had a great run, beating me by 17 minutes.

Orienteering race 45:59 [5] *** 3.2 km (14:22 / km) +125m 12:01 / km
ahr:112 max:184 spiked:9/11c

Brown middle distance course at Pacheco Pass. Was the first runner, and generally had a fairly good run, although I made a 5 min error on #5, and a 1 min error on #3. However, the times got faster and faster as the morning went on because it was very open with lots of high grass, and big elephant tracks developed. At the end, some people said it was not that much fun or challenging, because they just followed the freeways through the grass. Oh well, it was fun navigating by myself, even if I had to give up the glory.
