Running race 1:11:30 [5] 10.0 mi (7:09 / mi)

Final Army 10 miler tryout. My time was honestly very disappointing, since despite my training over the past two weeks my time increased by two minutes. I can only speculate as to why this happened. Spending a week at low altitude could have contributed. Also, I went out way too fast--my pace for my first mile was a 5:37/mi. I had optimistically hoped to get a 1:05:00 and have a good shot at making the team, but that didn't happen. Splits are below; in parenthesis is the difference between actual time and what I had projected to make 65 minutes.
Splits by mileage
1.17 0:06:35 ( -0:45)
2.04 0:12:25 ( -0:25)
3.55 0:23:30 ( +1:00)
3.99 0:26:50 ( +1:30)
5.92 0:40:55 ( +3:05)
6.89 0:47:55 ( +3:45)
7.78 0:54:30 ( +4:30)
9.30 1:06:00 ( +5:50)
9.74 1:09:20 ( +6:10)
10.00 1:11:30 ( +6:30)
There is still theoretically a chance I might make the team, but it is slim. I think I'll transition to a more sustainable running plan and focus more on the rest of the body, which I've been neglecting.

If there is an upside, it is that, while my speed and endurance weren't at the same level on this run, if the first two miles were the APFT 2 mile, I would've ran a 12:10, which is my fastest 2 mile time in over three years. Now I know I can focus more on pushups and situps with a reasonable hope of getting 300.

Running 31:30 [3] 4.06 mi (7:46 / mi)

Ran the last four miles of the army 10 miler qualifying course--tomorrow is the last tryout day so these will be the miles I'll be sucking on the most. I ran with a buddy who is a little slower than me, which was fine because I didn't want to go on a fast run today. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be running at least 1min/mile faster than this.
Splits:
Titus Blvd: 6:50
35th St: 13:20
Yano: 26:00
Prussman: 29:30
Keeping in mind how much faster I'll be running tomorrow, my goal is to be at Yano St. at the 1 hr mark.

Pacing 42:20 [1] 3.1 mi (13:39 / mi)

Jog with Hilarie along the Prairie Path from Edson Ave to Highland and back. Served as a recovery run from the 16.2mi run.
11 PM

Running 43:54 [4] 5.9 mi (7:26 / mi)

Run along the Prairie Path W from Edson to Glen Ellyn Main to Duane and Evergreen and back. Plotted this distance to round out my miles to 9 for the day. Humidity kicked my butt.
Split @ turnaround was 22:30, so my time back was faster by over a minute. Some confusion as to exactly where the turnaround point was may have contributed to this. Still, I was hoping to hover closer the the 7min/mile mark than the 7:30. Not a night for a very fast effort, though.

Running 1:13:05 [4] 10.34 mi (7:04 / mi)
slept:0.0

First part of a 16.21 mi run on country roads around Farmingdale and Loami. I learned my lesson from my last run and left before sunrise, while it was still cool. My run took me south down Farmingdale road over the interstate to a country road called Irish road; I made three large sides of a box to end up back on the friendly side of the interstate at the start of Farley Rd. This is where I took my first break.

Running 28:34 [4] 3.97 mi (7:12 / mi)
slept:0.0

Second part of a 16.21 mi run on country roads around Farmingdale and Loami. This part was all north along Farley Rd. Some of the road was loose and gravelly and might have passed as trail running. At Old Jacks I made a decision to keep following my route instead of cutting back home, and I ran to Bomke Rd before taking my second break.

Running 13:52 [4] 1.9 mi (7:18 / mi)
slept:0.0

Third part of a 16.21 mi run on country roads around Farmingdale and Loami. This was the final stretch, an "L" of rolling hills formed by Bomke Rd, the S curve, and Farmingdale back in. At this point I could tell I had a blister, but with the end in sight it wasn't too bad. I knew I wouldn't break any speed records with this run, but I figure throwing long runs like today's run into my workout plan will help my endurance for the final 10 miler tryouts on Thursday.

Running 22:33 [4] 3.3 mi (6:50 / mi)

First part of a 5.33 mile run from my parents' house down Farmingdale Rd. This was an out and back run south to just past the interstate (2.12 miles). I had meant to go further, but I lost my courage when I saw a seeming endless sea of cornfields between the interstate and my intended turnaround. Not too far on my way back, the heat and humidity took its toll on me and I had to stop and take a break for a few minutes.

Running 6:37 [4] 0.97 mi (6:49 / mi)

Second part of a 5.33 mile run from my parents' house down Farmingdale Rd. After my first break, I continued on but found that my energy was still sapped. I had not expected it to be so warm that late in the evening.

Running 7:23 [4] 1.06 mi (6:58 / mi)

Third part of a 5.33 mile run from my parents' house down Farmingdale Rd. This was one final push back to my parents' house. I could not keep up the pace I had been running at earlier, but the idea of being finished with the run was enough motivation.

Hiking 1:05:55 [2] 2.1 mi (31:23 / mi) +1476ft 18:51 / mi

Nice hike in USAFA. Hiked up Stanley Canyon to the reservoir with my sister. Lots of amazing views and photo ops. This is the uphill entry.

Hiking 49:20 [2] 2.1 mi (23:29 / mi)

Hike down from Stanley Reservoir to the bottom of the trail. Slow but steady walking pace. Picked up a ipad-sized slab of rock on the way down, a hiking ritual for me.

Running 27:20 [4] 3.99 mi (6:51 / mi)

First run of the first four miles of the Ft. Carson 10 Miler qualifiying course. Started from Garcia Gym, took Porter to Prussman to Barkeley to 35th St to Magrath to Minick until the Prussman intersection. Weather was cool and rainy. Kept a decent pace, slower than my past time trial but well under 7min/mile. At the end of the run, walked about a quarter mile back to the gym to do it all again.
Splits:
Titus Blvd: 7:34
35th St: 13.36
Yano: 24:15

Running 27:50 [4] 3.99 mi (6:59 / mi)

Second run of the first four miles of the Ft. Carson 10 Miler qualifiying course. Started from Garcia Gym, took Porter to Prussman to Barkeley to 35th St to Magrath to Minick until the Prussman intersection. Weather was cool and rainy. Kept a decent pace, slower than my past time trial and the first run but still under 7min/mile. Despite this lap being 30 seconds slower than the first lap, I lost all of that time in the first two miles; the second two miles (35th St. to finish) had the same splits for both runs.
Splits:
Titus Blvd: 7:56
35th St: 14:06
Yano: 24:45
8 PM

Running 21:00 [4] 3.11 mi (6:45 / mi)

Tonight I set out to run my standard Link-Pueblo route. However, as I approached the railroad tracks a train approached and I had to settle for stopping short of the railroad tracks and dividing my run.
Split:
11:50 at Kevin's house (1.71 miles)

Running 13:05 [4] 1.96 mi (6:41 / mi)

After the train passed, I resumed my run with a second wind and finished the last two miles with a faster pace than the first three.

Running race 1:09:24 [5] 10.0 mi (6:56 / mi)

Tryout for Fort Carson Army 10 miler time. I came in 3rd out of 9 competitors. The men's team will have 8 runners, but I've heard 5 or 6 of the spots are taken already. After today, another spot has been taken--the 1st place runner came in ahead of me despite running an extra 2 miles. I think I can catch the 2nd place runner though, so I'll train hard and try again on the 25th for the final tryout. Good course, mostly flat and not repetitive.

Running 35:26 [4] 5.07 mi (6:59 / mi)

Same Link-Pueblo loop as Saturday's run, except today I was able to complete it without stopping. I attribute this to it being much cooler at 8PM than 2PM. Good run, felt fast. My goal was under 7min/mile, mission accomplished. Even adding Saturday's segments together, I still improved my time by over a minute. Hopefully this is a good sign for the Army 10 miler tryout on the 11th.
Splits:
11:55 at Kevin's house (1.71mi)
21:38 at RR tracks (3.14mi)

Saturday Jul 6, 2013 #

2 PM

Running 22:40 [4] 3.14 mi (7:13 / mi)

Link-Pueblo Loop pt 1. From my house to Ohio to Link Rd, S to the railroad tracks. I had to stop there and take a break because the sun was sapping my energy.

Running 11:55 [3] 1.56 mi (7:38 / mi)

Link-Pueblo Loop pt 2. From the railroad tracks to Pueblo Rd N to Indiana.

Running 2:38 [4] 0.37 mi (7:07 / mi)

Link-Pueblo Loop pt 3. Final stretch into town and back down Missouri.
