Run 48:10 [3] 4.8 mi (10:02 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Green

Distance is made up, for the shoes.

Went for a run with Mallory. We started the Greenwood loop, but it was very badly lit & late, so we turned back and ran through some busier areas. We walked small segments because Mallory's knee is injured.

Then Adam told me to watch out for copperheads, poison ivy, and enormous spiders...so now I'll probably be paranoid at the meet tomorrow. He also said that copperheads smell like cucumbers, but he may have been kidding at that point.

Map run 23:48 [3] 2.8 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Green

Part of the Greenwood run. I brought the Waipapa map (NZ) along and read about half of it.

Cross-Training 45:00 [3]

Abs, strength, some cardio.

Note

Unfortunately didn't run today.

I could log ~7 hours of math homework of varying intensity :).

Greenwood run to escape from math homework.

Aikido 1:45:00 [3]

Aikido 1:45:00 [3]

Aikido!

It was more of a workout than usual. We did a conditioning set (it was short, but fairly intense) that involved jump rope, burpees, and sit-ups alternating. Jump rope was definitely the easiest set (*despises burpees*).

Then we practiced the release motions. I don't have much practice with the 5th & 6th, and the 7th was pretty much new.

We practiced the full walk; I have this part mostly down.

We did side front rolls, side rolls, and back rolls from standing. My back rolls are a bit questionable and sort of involve me flipping over backwards rather than rolling over an arm....

Then we did a new move where you flip someone over your hip...and this one got a little messy. I sort of threw Mallory a little over-enthusiastically (sorry! ;-)), but then I had a lot of trouble throwing one of the French guys because my form is bad and he's a lot bigger than I am.

Map run 32:09 [3] 3.8 mi (8:28 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Green

Greenwood run. I ran with the green map from Interscholastics this year in Texas. Green, hilly, a few trails.

...kept looking up so as not to step on the dead squirrel again. I guess this was good practice staying aware of surroundings, even though the squirrel wasn't there anymore.

Orienteering 1:08:18 [4] **** 6.8 km (10:03 / km) +275m 8:21 / km
spiked:8/15c shoes: orienteering shoes

Day 2. Much better run than yesterday!

I felt a lot more focused & under control. I concentrated on having a plan and checking off features (and I even talked to myself from 4-5 & told myself which features I was passing!).

I also looked for handrails to simplify legs, which I think helped a lot. I sometimes tend to start running straight on the line without considering longer but safer routes, so it was good to take some trails today and get in some stretches of fast running.

I saw Nick (?) from West Point about halfway through the run, and then I kept seeing him throughout it (we ended up sprinting the finish at the same time!). It was weird because we'd often leave the control in slightly different ways, so I wouldn't see him for the middle of the leg...and then I'd see him again in the control circle! It was actually great motivation to run faster & it added some pressure, which was nice.

I did have a few bobbled controls, but everything was fairly minor & correctable.

There was a really beautiful area between 3 and 4, where the course crossed a stream. The ground was covered in leaves and there was a wide flat open space around the place where two branches of the stream met.

Running red this weekend was really fun. It was great to be able to compare routes with more friends than usual since the green course is often split between men and women.

...and now I miss orienteering again ;-)
