Orienteering 41:58 [3] *** 4.5 km (9:20 / km)
spiked:20/23c shoes: Brooks Green

COC meet at Shoreview. It was great to see everyone!

There were a lot of Lakesiders, including Mr. DeGrys and Ms. Butler! I think it was Ms. Butler's first time orienteering--wish I'd had a chance to talk to her about the course afterwards, but I was helping at the starts.

Huw tore up his leg by sprinting into a fence (or something) at the finish, but he seemed okay.

I mostly navigated well, but I bobbled something silly and then made two errors in a row along the creek (turned left instead of right when I hit the path, read the map too quickly and thought there were two parallel paths on the near side of the creek instead of one on each side).

Running felt solid except for on hills; I really need to put in some hill work. I got very winded & had to walk parts of some.

Note

While packing for UNC, I decided to use the bag that I took on the orienteering trip this summer since there's more space in it...and I found out I'd left it only half-emptied from July.

There was a nice conglomerate of socks in one of the pockets that are somewhat crunchy and still have a lot of swamp among them...and a Czech bus ticket, scrabble tiles!, those neat JWOC numbers with the timing chips in them, and a lot of safety pins.

Run 27:15 [3] 3.0 mi (9:05 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Green

Distance is made up; I didn't have the gps watch.

I ran along the bike path from the Lake Forest Park town center. It was evening, and all the lights were reflecting in the lake.

Walk 30:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Green

I jogged part of this, since I can't keep up with my mom while she's walking!

Run 26:05 [3] 3.1 mi (8:25 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Green

Everything outside is very soggy.

Note

Skype training with Tori, Alison, & Andrew...really fun, although I suppose we should spend more of it doing the map-study bit.

Note

Mapwork: Routes and visualization for an 06 course at Witzelsberg, while stretching. The course looks interesting, and I don't remember it at all. It'd probably be better to do mapwork earlier in the day since I keep almost falling asleep.

Run 26:56 [3] 3.1 mi (8:41 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Green

Slow today. I felt sluggish during the run--hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Can't wait to go orienteering soon!

Note

Mapwork: routes on a map from Katzelsdorf. It reminded me of some of the Italy maps because it's really steep but the contours aren't very detailed. Route choices were tricky on it, since just contouring around a bland hillside isn't necessarily reliable. To take trails, you'd have to climb, then run the trail, then lose the climb again...so maybe a combination would be best. I'm still not sure.

Note

Mapwork: I went through a lot of maps, trying to find one that I didn't remember--it's more fun to do map study with an unfamiliar map, I think. I finally used one from last November's ONA and went through routes/visualization for 15 mins.

Run 25:53 [3] 3.1 mi (8:21 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Green

Note

Mapwork: visualization of legs 1-6 of the 2007 Barebones Mt. Laurie course, while doing Mallory's "frog" stretch.

It was challenging to visualize the detailed contour area in the southern part of the map. It's a white & yellow mushy area of single-contour-high depressions and hills.
