Running race 13:54:00 [3] 64.0 km (13:02 / km) +2400m 10:58 / km

First Trail Ultra Marathon. Really cool being at an event like this for the first time in a while. The excitement.
The vibe. The goody bags. The bunch of like-minded nutters who were also crazy enough to enter a race like this.

Started off pretty well, probably a bit to eager to not be last. So at 15km we were feeling worse off than we'd hoped to at that stage. The descent to halfway was the first section to expose our lack of training and Dan came into the 30km aid station a bit defeated. But dropping out was never on the cards so we restocked and resocked and left for unchartered territory.

As we left we had found our people. The guys in the same struggle fest that we were. Our comrades, the cut off crusaders. Was fun yo yoing with them as we took breaks at different times and undercut them at the aid stations.

Saw a snake at around 35km. That was an omen for what was to come.

At 36km was where I cracked and every step from then on was sore. It was still manageable and there was no turning back.

We cracked on, up and down the drakensberg, the inspiration behind the lord of the rings misty mountains.

Darkness was thrust upon us and the headlamps stipulated as compulsory gear were put to use. It was really beautiful in the dark, the moon quite full and the stars super visible, with the silhouette of the mountains below them. Had to remind myself to appreciate it while out there and ignore the pain in the legs.

From 50km to the finish was never ending. The path into sani pass hotel super technical, slippery and in the dark led to us being pretty gatvol.

We eventually made it out of the last ravine and worked our way towards the finish arch. Put in a jog for the last ten metres to please the crowds. We were finished.

An epic journey. Lessons learned and items checked off the bucket list.

Glad I did it.
