Orienteering race 1:21:02 [4] *** 5.9 km (13:44 / km) +175m 11:58 / km

Second Day GNC. Warmer and wetter. Still a fairly clean run, but the first half of the course was rockier ground and I really suck in that. I've gotta find someplace around here with rocks to train in. Also had trouble when it started to rain and my glasses fogged. Another thing we don't practice much in sunny SoCal. Surprised to discover that Mary was starting only two minutes ahead of me (she had moved her start earlier). This meant it was likely I would see her on the course, and if I didn't, that wasn't a good thing either. I first saw her coming out of #3 as I was going in. When I came out I noted that I was most certainly not moving as fast as she had been - her training is paying off big time. Only saw her once more as I was headed toward #4. She was far below me on her way to #5. Definitely making time on me. I kept reminding myself to just run my own race and not think about it.

Once again felt good about my route choices and attack points. Once again screwed up control #8. I tried to follow a wide, shallow reentrant up toward a ridge, but ended up out of the reentrant and much further west of the ridge than expected. Slowed down considerably since I didn't know where I was and even when I got onto the ridge I still wasn't sure where I was on it. I thought I'd gone further than I had (darn pace counting again!) so I lost a little more time relocating on the ridge. Not a good split and likely cost me the race.

Mary was about five minutes faster than me today and ended up with a well deserved two day total win. In general a fun weekend.

Event: GA Nav. Cup

Orienteering race 1:06:55 [4] *** 5.1 km (13:07 / km) +135m 11:35 / km

First day of Georgia Navigator Cup. Cold. I wore two layers plus a hat and gloves. Logging this a week late, so of course my memory is weak about how it went. The terrain was pretty open ridge and valley which plays to my strengths. The training I've been doing kept me from being excessively slow, so that was nice. Did a good job of keeping in touch with the map and finding useful attack points and good route choices. Lost time on leg 8. There was very high visibility from 7 and I looked out and misidentified features in the distance. As a result I went further east then intended and stopped short (not pace counting!!!!). While I was trying to relocate Mike Minium runs by shouting at me to run faster. I didn't. Just stopped on the trail until I figured out where I was.

Ended up about 2 minutes ahead of Mary. Nice to be ahead, but not much wiggle room. Pretty close to the top women on Green too.
