Orienteering race 58:38 [4] *** 4.3 km (13:38 / km)

Middle course at the Flying Pig. Another pretty good day, although I was finally getting tired by the end of this. This course was again a little long for middle specs - winning time was 40 minutes. More flat areas on this course, so it required more compass and measuring work. In many cases I kind of floundered and didn't realize until I got to the control that there was a clear catching feature or attackpoint. Must have been brain dead from the previous night's board meeting.

WU/CD 9:30 [3]

jogged part of the way to the start, then Phil M. offered me a ride, so I wimped out and got in the car.

Orienteering race 1:51:14 [4] *** 7.0 km (15:53 / km) +275m 13:17 / km

This was a LONG course. Luckily, it was a nice, dry, warm weekend. Thought the trails had their share of muddiness, it wasn't nearly as bad as it might have been if it were a wet weekend. That was especially important today as there was a lot of trail running. The meet information had discouraged use of the trails, but after going through the woods from 2 to 3, I decided it was better to stay on the trails. The course did a pretty good job of offering route choice problems. Even staying on trails had some serious technicality involved - with multiple routes to choose from and really having to stay in contact to avoid taking a wrong turn.

I didn't notice any obvious mistakes during my run. The attackpoint splits show lost time of 2:35 over controls 1, 4, and 5. At #1 I think I was just overly cautious running through the flat area. I also ended up starting with someone else on my same course (he had changed courses but not start times) and that sort of freaked me out and may have slowed me down.

at #4 I just aimed a bit wrong and hit the hillside too far to the right and had to turn over to the proper reentrant. At #5, it may just be that my going around on trails was slower than people who took a more direct route?

I asked Mike later what winning time he was going for - he said about 70 minutes - they were using IOF long - is that defined for Green?

Orienteering 56:01 [1] ***

Walked around the North Training area to get a feel for the terrain and the map.

Orienteering race 48:19 [4] *** 3.5 km (13:48 / km) +145m 11:26 / km

MIddle Green Course at Flying Pig. Felt good to get out in the woods. I could really tell that my physical training is paying off. I was able to keep up a decent pace. I made a 180 error out of number 6. I'm still not quite sure why. It might be that in refolding the map I turned it around so that it then looked like a left turn out of the control rather than a right turn. Lucky for me, the leg started with an uphill that quickly went back down. In the other direction, once I hit the top of the hill I could tell there was not imminent down, so I corrected reasonably quickly. Lost about one or two minutes. I also had a young girl stop me at number 5 to ask where she was. I gave her minimal support and then talked to her at the finish about it.

I thought this course was the best of the weekend. Right distance and proper technicality

Other (Box Moving) 15:00 [1]

I was going to go swimming today, and then to Harvey's, and then do my laundry so I had stuff to wear in Ohio. I forgot the laundry basket and had to go back making not enough time to swim. So instead I just loaded some boxes in the car and went straight to Harvey's and carted them upstairs to the "Clare's boxes" room. He offered to help, but I said no since it was going to be my training for the day.

Intervals intervals 16:00 [4] *

HDR interval workout at the track. 1-2-3-4-3-2-1 with either 2 or 3 min recovery depending on the interval. I forgot to bring an Ohio map with me, but had Anza-Borrego in the car, so I ran with that.

WU/CD warm up/down 43:00 [2]

Warm-up / Cool-down and recovery between intervals. I actually arrived on time and did a pretty decent warm-up and cool-down today. I'm somewhat surprised at the total duration.
