Mt biking the Queen Charlotte Track, got dropped off water taxi at Torea Bay and biked the last third of the track with Claire. The first bit was the hardest with a steep climb, which I was told by the water taxi driver, "was unrideable and everyone has to push up that hill" so I was determined to ride it, almost did it after getting through what I think is the hardest/steepest section I have ever managed to ride about 1/3 of the way up, only to slip on a loose rock 10m from the very top on a relatively easy bit, Claire tho did a bit of walking but rode quite a bit as well. Was also getting bloody hot, and this was only about 10:30.
From there it was down through about a dozen switch backs that were quite technical and went, release - break - corner - release, bloody hard work and Claire rode them bloody well, better than me in most places (esp since my front breaks have had it). then over another hill and down to Te Mahia saddle. From here it was a gentle rise over about 7 km to the last high point where we stopped for about 20 mins to have a break and a bite to eat.
Then was the most awesome part of the track, basically all gradual downhill through beech forest on an awesome single track for 6 km to Anakiwa, was loving it.
Finished off with a bike to and from Tirimoana on the road to look for a shop, was none, so had to spend 2 hours waiting for the caravan at the track end to open, before waiting another 2 hours for the water taxi back.
Awesome ride, would like to do the whole thing over a couple of days when the entire track is open to bikers.
