Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]
ahr:124 max:151 shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 340

Warming up for last leg, 6am doesn't feel right, only got about an hour sleep

Orienteering race (Jukola) 1:58:25 [5] **** 16.5 km (7:11 / km) +350m 6:29 / km
ahr:172 max:188 shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 340

JUKOLA. Last leg for OK Pan Arhus. Didn't feel the best to start with, or for most of the course, but picked up a bit in the last third. Started in 101st position and finished in 121st, would have been 122nd if I didn't put in an awesome sprint finish with the help of the Pan boys cheering me on. A lot of track running plus a massive amount of tracking, I could tell when had an area none of the other courses went to as there were no elephant tracks in and out of the controls. Was a pretty massive course and a pretty massive map at 1:10000, had a couple of long legs but nothing seemed too hard. Did miss a couple of controls tho, lost about 30 sec on the first, plus maybe another 4 mins in total over 3 misses. As I said still not feeling good, everytime I was on a track I was going the same speed as in the terrain, just had no extra speed, but I did start to feel a bit better on the last third.

Pretty awesome to be here again, Jukola is a must for anyone that has not done it.

Running warm up/down 5:00 [2]

Calves turned to rocks right near the end and the sprint finished them off, so tried to jog them out, but way to buggered to do a proper cool down so pulled the pin pretty early.

Event: Jukola 2009

Note
(rest day)

Didn't get much sleep last night either, as it doesn't get dark they can work all night, and decided to test the sound system the entire time, yksi, kaksi, kaksi, yksi is all the guy said, cant he count to 3! Was going to go for a slight jog but got carried away with all the excitement and catching up with heaps of people, its amazing in a crowd of 20000 you can run into just about everyone you know there, apart from the one guy who is ment to be giving you a ride back to his place after, and therefore forgets.

Fuck Jukola is Awesome

Note
(rest day)

At Jukola. After arriving after midnight and picking at random one of the 350 empty army tents to sleep in, a decision was made by me and Todd to have a bit of a rest day. Spent the time walking through the Jukola shops and watching movies while sitting inside the horse racing grandstand (glass covered). Awesome event centre.

Event: Forssa Games

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] +15m
ahr:138 max:154 shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 340

Warm up to the quarantine zone and the start for Forssa Games. Luckily I didn't start until 6:20pm as last nights quite beer turned into a bit of a late one with some of the Danish and Brittish boys, plus then we had to try and get to Forssa which was a major in itself. The beers didn't help my physical feeling either.

Orienteering race (Middle) 32:55 [5] *** 4.5 km (7:19 / km) +75m 6:45 / km
ahr:179 max:190 shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 340

Forssa Games, much read about event I've always wanted to do, not anymore. Shit course, shit map, shit terrain. 10 controls in some boring shitty area that reminded me more of some of the maps in Estonia. Then missed the 2 controls that had a little bit of oing in then, well the first number 6 was a bit bingo, small rock (covered in moss) in a green area, and then number 7 I popped out of some green thinking I had gone far enough but hadn't. Lost about 2 - 2.30min all up, and still running like a sack of potatoes. Chris did well, 15th tied with Miika who was in NZ at the start of the year, winners did 22mins so pretty fast.

Running warm up/down 5:00 [2] +5m
ahr:125 max:146 shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 340

Bit of a cool down job, was feeling a bit stiff and sore so tried to jog it out, wasn't working so instead focused some energy in trying to find rides to Jukola. Success with me, Chris and Keith plus all the bags with Neil and Todd with no bags with the Danes. Gota love travelling. Also ordered a family sized pizza for dinner hoping some fast food might do the trick, the pizza guy was awesome and in between banter reckoned I couldn't eat a whole family size, so when he brought it out he had made it about the size of a dinner table, either way I won as I had breakfast and lunch for the next day.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Triax+11

Warm up and jog to start from the quarantine for the sprint qual. Again no HR thank you IOF. Still not feeling any better

Orienteering race (Sprint) 17:10 [3] ** 3.2 km (5:22 / km)
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Triax+11

NOC sprint qual. Talk about a fucken easy, was basically just a running race, and again I had nothing. Was running knowing I can run faster but just couldn't do it. Only missed a little when I didn't see a fence under a circle and had to go 15 m around it otherwise it was just all lack of speed.

Orienteering warm up/down 19:00 [3] ***** +30m
ahr:142 max:167 shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 340

Warm up for NOC middle/World Cup 1. Spent about 10 mins on the warm up map, then the rest running around the field trying to spell out dirty words with the GPS on

Orienteering race (Middle) 49:37 [5] ***** 6.0 km (8:16 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 340

NOC middle. Again felt like complete shit although I dont know what my HR was as I was not allowed to wear by Polar watch due to the IOF crack down on anything other than a map or compass - wankers, felt like I had no energy or speed when running - strength wasn't too bad apart from going up the steep motherfucker hill when poked. Was in the mode of just go straight for the 2nd control and a bit lucky to pick something up close to it. Was standing about 20 m from the second pivot on a parallel feature losing about 30 sec before seeing the guy watching the control lying on the rock right next to it wearing a bright orange coat. Also lost 40sec - 1 min on the last on the loop back when a few guys looking for it right next to the control distracted me and I picked a shit route on the way. Other mistake was going to 13, where Olav Lundanes came racing past me just before the green and I thought I'll let him tow me through this shit, well he did and also towed me way off line (his mistake is mentioned on worldofo) and I thought things didn't seem right (once he was out of sight) and got confused as to which ridge system I was on, lost about 1.30 all up on that. The rest was pretty good, but just couldn't put in any speed. I had basically caught Thomas the Belgium on the butterfly (he was one of the one who distracted me) who went on and did about 45 mins. So getting pretty pissed with the way I'm feeling, hoping its just jetlag or something (haven't been sleeping well, hasn't the sun heard of night time) as I seem to be oing ok most of the time (still some errors to iron out) without actually consciously going through any processes.

Again awesome area and map (the maps have been perfect with lots of detail) just wish I was feeling better, but probably need to feel a hell of a lot better to run sub 6min/km like the top guys

Orienteering (Model) 44:00 [3] ***** +155m
ahr:153 max:186 shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 340

Model event for the NOC middle. Again an awesome map. Did a middle section of about half a dozen controls at a higher tempo, nailed them all but still struggling physically. Jogged around a bit with Todd as well.

Orienteering (Model) 10:00 [3] ** +20m
ahr:149 max:172 shoes: Inov8 RocLite 305 v.blue

Model event for the sprint - part 1. Wore my Inov8's to test to start with, did some of the course on the flat street section. Boring and fucken easy. Shoes not the best on this so went and changed.

Orienteering (Model) 13:00 [3] ** +50m
ahr:147 max:173 shoes: Nike Air Zoom Triax+11

Sprint Model part 2. Put on my runners and went to test the forest part. Was a small steep slope, with a gravely base, Didn't matter what shoes for grip as you sunk into it so felt more confident about wearing these for the sprint. Still a fucken simple area/course and still feeling like shit
