TONIC Long, on 'The Maze' which is really Mushroom Rd down to top end of Muriwai. Wasn't feeling great before the start, stiff and lethargic, spent a bit of time trying to warm up. Was off a bit going to 4, and saw Darren coming up as I was going down, then proceeded to go off towards 5 as well. Darren caught me right before 5, was behind him till about 9, then he just ran away before appearing again running the wrong way in front of the maze looking for the track. The Maze was shit, could see where I wanted to go but couldn't get there most of the time, couldn't read where the fucken 'gaps' were and lost a bit of time. Drifted right on 17, where I crossed the track, there was a hill to my left, so made a parallel. Was pretty good through the Mushroom Rd segment, then started to fade and drift and not really read anything. Got really pissed off at 25, that area is not mapped like that at all, it looks like it is completely off a aireal photo and is wrong, plus I now think the sand has moved a lot further out and changed angle slightly. Struggled home from there. The maze and that shit loop should not be included in an 'A' level event.

Was way off the pace, and not because of the mistakes, just wasn't anywhere near fast enough when looking at the splits, my HR was down a bit as well, might explain something (also feel like I'm getting sick) pretty disappointed, good slap in the face.

Fuck Gene is impressive, and Tane finally getting close to a good one

TONIC Middle race at Mushroom Rd, such an awesome area. Was going ok, apart from trying to use the non existent (on the map) tracks to number 4. Didn't take the best route to 11, missed about 30 sec on 15, drifting left into vague stuff that all look like little depressions and knolls, was real hesitant on 18, looked like a dodgy control site and had no confidence in it, and contoured too high, then on 20 (the last hard control) I orienteered perfectly to my attackpoint then inverted the contours the control was on, couldn't relocate as the area I was on was under the bloody number, went back to the hill, took a few sec before I realised what I had done the control was basically looking right at me, loosing at least 90 sec. Went for the finish split, but bloody Nick piped me by a sec, a father to be shouldn't be putting himself into that much risk.

Overall it looks like I was oing well, but I wasn't, I'm still shit on my compass, and the majority of the time I'm oing without a plan (except for number 20, that was probably the best leg tech wise up until the inversion), I found the detail stood out when you looked at it and then found the handrails on the map to use after that. I also felt really slow, so I was surprised to be around the pack after my mistake, thought I would have fallen down alot more. Gene is getting very impressive.

TONIC fun night score event, at Muriwai Golf Club. Was good fun, especially when you can pick up water balloons at the first control and get Jamie and Matt, then chase them down for 2 legs carrying another couple to get them again. Had no idea what was going on for about 3 controls, just following lights and people, then started looking at my map, did a couple of controls then the Matt, Todd and Jamie train rolled past, so I jumped on, Todd disappeared somewhere, then all of a sudden it felt like we were 'out in front' and thought I might try. Fucked up going to the last control, the only time I was in the front, (I think my compass is actually fucked, or the sword I was holding was fucking with it). Then Jamie ran away like a little girl up the finish chute instead of finishing as he thought I was going to water bomb him again, what a pansy.

TONIC Mini Sprints, 3 short sprints on small maps, started at Mt Albert Grammar, then Mt Albert before Research Centre. Wasn't taking this too seriously, but still trying to run hard. Fluffed about on 2 and 3 on map 1. Overran 1 on map 2 big time, no idea about the scale, and map 3 was quite good in terms of sprint racing with lots of walls and passage ways. Feeling really slow

Note

Product launch at work went way late, plus free food and beer got in the way of any training plans

Note
(rest day)

Left Shin and Ribs really sore, both from the last time I ran into the fence.

Auckland Relays at same place again. Bunch took off like there was a forest fire behind them, settled in about 50m behind and tried to stay in visual contact. Lost that on the way to 5 as I had enough of this fucken cutty grass and couldn't be fucked pushing through it. At 6 took a fall and my watch went blank, started again halfway to 7. Turns out most of the others went blank somewhere and by this stage I was in 2nd by myself. Had Gene at 8, then we had splits, I missed 10, then on 15 I ran into that fucken fence again, this time really hurting myself, hobbled up the hill and Gene caught me again at 15. Then to really take the piss we went through what has to be the tallest, thickest cutty grass block in all history down the hill. I let Gene lead the way through and make a track, some segments were so big we had to crawl under the arches, then Gene ran too fast for me to keep up along the track to the last control.

My arms now look like a cross stitch pattern of cuts upon cuts upon cuts, and 3 massive bruises on my shins from that fucken fence, shows putting them on the map doesn't aid safety at all

Note

Calves are a bit of a mess now (but not too bad), plus I seem to have strained by R biceps somehow. Ribs seem a bit sore as well, mainly from the 3 fence falls, especially the last where I landed really heavily on a stump, inside a cutty grass bush
