TONIC Long, legs again no where near as sore as I thought they would be, achilles a little tight, and groin/hammy still tight as well. Took ages to find the start triangle on the map, then nailed 1, kept feeling like I was drifting left on the way to 2, but somehow I was on line. 3 ok, 4, the hill right before the control was massive, the one before that (bigger looking one) didn't exist, and almost overshot, 5 I was re-folding my map leaving the control so was a bit wonky, 6 good, 7 could have been dangerous but kept my line adn eyes up and around, 8 could not make sense of mapping around the control was not where I expected it to be, 9 hesitated due to the control circle covering a tag line on a big depression that I was reading as a hill and therefore could not understand. 10-11 good, 12 more detail before the control that made me look, 13 was a bit scrappy, first drifting back into the track (which was ok anyway) then was thinking the hill was off the main ridge, and the right side of the ridge was way steeper than mapped, was punching the control when Ross ran passed it... bit of a pace on to 14 in front of Ross, then tuck in behind him for 15, then he took off from 15 like I was standing still, probably because I was standing still having a leppin. 16 ok, then 17 was in the area that is like the fucken Bermuda triangle, heap of detail going on, shown only with 2 large depressions, what the hell!! Then going to 18 there were horses on the road so I went in early not really thinking just not wanting to give them anything to complain about, and was way early on a clearing. Got into it from there and started peeling off some good legs, 19,20,21,22 but my right hipflexor was starting to hurt. Spectator control 23, up the road and navigating into 24, hang on what the hell is this massive ridge that looks similar to what the control should be on doing here, shit what have I done, check it out, then realise I'm back in the Bermuda triangle, loose a min here. (this area is the worst mapping, look at the map it looks completely different to either side of it) 25 I really started hurting, hipflexor mainly, but got the control ok after struggling up the hill, 26 again things just didn't seem right, the actually knoll was about 30cm high in a massive flat area, another min here, 27 ok but only because you could see the control, then 28 was a massive mistake, hipflexor really painful and wasn't really thinking about anything else, somehow ended up way left, what I was on was a really sharp ridge line with lots of little hill tops, not a massive broad hill system, so couldn't relocate, and thought I was directly south of control on that ridge, had a look, no, bail, ended up getting it after going out to the road loosing 4 mins, 29 I just wanted the race over, navigating in, control should be in depression to the right of a massive clearing, running to where I thought it was, hang on there is a massive clearing right in front of me, shit I'm too far left, so go for a look, nothing is making sense, go back to where I was, try to look at the clearing to use and see there is a control in it, WTF! another min. 30 was another mess, detail with hills everywhere but just blank white on the map, useless another min, and finally the struggle to the finish, had no sprint in me today and would have been a bad idea with hipflexor as well.

Thats 8 min lost in the final loop, 4 sort of my fault 4 because of the map. I would have almost been happy with 98mins.

Warm up, trying to get my groin moving, legs feelings surprisingly ok, in a pain sort of way, thought achilles would be wanting to snap this morning

The old start triangle is where you are standing trick, I hate that and wasn't looking at the runners before me. 1,2,3,4 all ok, started to try and put a bit of pace on to 5 downhill, started drifting right but pulled it up quick enough into the control, got 6 ok altho others had problems..?.. 7 good, 8 was a bit funny and I was feeling pretty good so trying to push hard which was affecting my map reading, hit the track and just bounced off it up the gully to the control, 9 I was starting to feel stuffed and didn't want to climb and ended up swinging underneath some green, but knew where I was and nailed the control. 10 good, 11 I was heading through the left side of the big depression, expecting to see the control right in front of me at the top, got there and ended up standing on a knoll, couldn't see a control or a depression, and thought I must have been too far right, which didn't make sense, turned left, have a staggered look thinking nothing makes sense, turn back around and see the control about 20m from the knoll I was standing on, FUCK, no knoll on the map. 12 used the track to make sure I got it, 13 I read it as being on the same contour as the ridge going into it, so run into the slope looking up and down, and at the track/green, then got into some really scrappy green stuff, bashed through to hit the track, stopped looked at map, took a guest that I was too low as that was the side I could see best coming along so went higher and back along, found it but wasn't pleased. Legs were heavy heading to last, but wanted to put in a big sprint as there was ment to be a prize (useless AOC), ended up smashing Matt by 2sec after he was prancing around thinking he had won it.

Some dumb reverse chasing start race with Nick about 20 sec in front and Smithson 20 behind, legs were just dead from the get go, plus the long uphill run on the sandy track didn't help, went loopy right to the first, could see Nick on the way to 2, but he started heading right, then saw it, it was high, went into 3 ok in the green which you could see from the clearing. then took the lead going to 4 with a pack of Ross+ right behind, knew I should have been low enough to miss the first erosion gully, so when I hit one thought it had to be the 2nd one with the control in it and followed it up, people where stopping and running all over the show in the green, and I was thinking 'ha I know where I'm going' followed it a while until I realised something isn't quite working out, headed north and hit the next gully, FUCKEN HELL and no pack to be seen. Legs were in major struggle town now up the hill to 5, 6 the control was steering at you from a mile away, 7 hurt up the hill, hurt even more when the Rassmus/Gene/Tom/Darren+ pack punched at the same time, was hanging off the end of this pack to 8 and most of the way to 9, died at 9 and could hardly see them by the time I got to 10, I was dead, stumbled to 11, not paying any attention and lost a bit of time because of that, 12 wasn't flash, but had to put in another sprint finish to consolidate my morning performance, thought I was a bit cautious going down the hill, but having been that fast in a long time, took out that split by 7 sec, hell yeah.

So just didn't have the legs to do a second race at that pace, and suffered big time dropping a lot of time when I couldn't get on/hold on to either pack, but on the plus side, Matt now knows who the real sprint finish king is

Started work at 4am out at Fonterra, (meaning a 3am wakeup), but didn't really sleep.
Managed to get the hell out of there in time to get to soccer, but was so wasted, didn't run round as much as I normally do and then spent the last 5 mins hobbling in goal after a 120kg Russian landed on my foot after an attempted header, got some nice sprig bruises, thankful it doesn't seem worse than that

The thought of staring work tomorrow at 4am shot any motivation out of me
