Quick little pre-conference run on the treadmill. Did a warm up then 4 x 3 min at: 6.31, 6.18, 6.11, 6.07 pace. Felt ok, hamstring starting to feel a bit wierd on last intervals, but no twinges, so hopefully just strengthening!!

Now enroute to Pasadena, CA- more conferencing, less snow. =(

Finally, a *real* ski! Went up to Northfield. Didn't have tons of time, but ran into Kelsey Allen, and old NH ski friend heading out just as I got there. We warned up together, caught up. She's now living in Colrain, working on a farm in Greenfield, so times are pretty quiet in the winter. She is doing Craftsbury Marathon tomorrow, so she didn't want to join me for my intervals. But I told her about the whole orienteering thing, and she seems keen to come out and give it a try sometime this spring, woo!

Did 3 x 5 minutes uphill. Northfield is good for uphill intervals, doesn't run out at all =)

XC skiing 24:30 [1]

To work on the broken skis. Unfortunately, I'm living on West Coast time, which means I was way late for prime ski-into-work conditions, most of the snow was already taken off the paths by the time I got there. Still, some good skiing along University Drive, then some sketchy skiing on campus before I gave up.

Running 31:00 intensity: (21:00 @2) + (10:00 @3)

Jog home from work with computer on back and skis + poles in hands, only slightly awkward. Dropped all that off after 13 min and went up and down Amity Hill twice.

Crazy ski with Alex. Decided 5.30 was a great time to go ski, ski area closed by then, so we went off to some snowmobile track in the woods Alex heard about. We drove around the recommended parking lot a bit trying to track it down, then started off some field and found it, whoop!

Skiing mostly worked, and was probably real good training for ski-o. We were classicing, but without super kick, so lotsa arms and lotsa awkward narrow-trail herring bone. We did the first of what were supposed to be at least three 10 min threshold intervals, but attempting to go threshold was a bit ridiculous in the dark on that trail.... so gave up after one and had a nice ski for a bit.

Then, downhill. Eep! Dark and steep enough to get speed and narrow and uneven trail. Perfect recipe. I had a great fall after trying to lose some speed grabbing onto a tree, headlamp flew dramatically off into the woods. Alex had a good one later on, will both have bruises for sure. Turns out, the tobaggoning-on-your-bum method of narrow trail decent is not at all bad. Don't loose too much speed, more or less in control, have to work on getting up quick at the other end!

To Peter and Gail's after for dinner, a good half hour late due to adventure, but amazing to come in the door into warmth and fantastic-smelling foods!

Woo! Bit of new snow, meant I could ski on the sidewalks with the sub-rock skis (the ones I broke during the Walker-Jospé 24h ski last spring). Went down Amity Hill (wee!) then along University Drive to the bike path- snowmobile groomed on one side, then shoveled for walking/biking on the other, perfect!!! Super pleased I could just ski out my front door!

The broken ski is a bit shaky (it's snapped in two, but not apart, the base is holding it together I think), does fine for just double-poling. DP itself felt fine, bit of an elbow complaint towards the end, but not bad.

Was warm and in a good mood when I came back, so unburried my car from the past 2 weeks- interesting strata of snow and ice.

Jog into work, was otherwise going to be late for astro-ph coffee!

XC skiing 15:00 [2]

Slept in until 9.20! Jeez jetlag.... less daylight, knew it would be really busy at work, so decided to ski commute into work as my only exercise op. Not the most effective in the end because broke through the snow continuously along University Drive, but then along a soccer field which had iced over more was better fun! Just in time to get there for morning coffee...

Strength 16:00 [0]

Home, found my apt keys, which I had left in a ski boot, obviously, and into the warm, definitely was cold out!

10 min abs, 2 min back, 2 min side plank with leg lifts, then 13-12-11 push ups- getting a wee bit stronger, woo!

Shoreview Park Winter O/WIOL #6- Course 7

Oops, forgot to start Garmin, so no track, no HR, bummer! Was fun, and caught me out a few times, twice in the urban bit, once in trail-bit, jeez! Was very nice of the course setter Kean to lend me compass, as I couldn't find mine at Dan's before hand. Only bad thing, hamstring started complaining about 30 min in, and felt like I shouldn't run full speed after that. I think the fact that it only hurts *after* a bunch of running is more indicative of needing to be strengthened than rest... will try to dig up some exercise sets to start doing.

1- up up up! some way to start...
2- on trails, woods looked fierce
3- down to road and over, coming in on little path
4- fine, then just got confused afer passing playground. I was right where the plan was to be, but got freaked out by the parking lot for some reason, really confused why I got so confused here...
7- accidentally cut into road loop area, ahd to come back out, then also ran past the darn thing, should have been reading control desc *and* map more, being a goof muppet cause friend Shara passed me =)
9- when high, not road, not sure if better route?
10- low to yellow, along trail and bit back track to trees, maybe would have been ok contouring through that lighter green? I was scared of the woods
13- less than ideal way down, picking around on trails
14- road
15- extra going through stream, whoops!
17- major oops, took off in totally wrong direction, maybe partly because trail I was on was under red out-of-bounds lines, hence not seen. might have been good to tape off there.... really should have used compass, or even just a bit more sense
19- attempted to cut off woods, hit green, boo
21- attempted some woods cutting, prob not faster

Not stellar orienteering. More focus needed. But more than anything, really want my hamstring to get better!!

Crosstrainer 30:00 [2]

Interval setting on an elliptical. It was kinda old school, when I tried to pedal backwards, it first showed a negative number then reset completely, whoops! Actually, workout room was way nicer than the one in the much fancier hotel in Victoria. Impressed- there was even a sauna!

Strength 20:00 [0]

push ups, but only 12 then 11, a sore muscle in my chest that isn't too happy
triceps, pulldowns
10 min abs, 2 min back, 2 min side planck

Running 50:00 [2]

Actually did use Garmin, but then didn't bring cradle to download. Tried to meet up with one of my science teammates, but then couldn't find the meeting place. Ran around the golf course, took some pretty pictures of mountains. Did 4 very gentle 2 min repeats, hamstring ok, a bit tired or tight at the very end close to hotel.

(rest day)

Now in Soccoro, New Mexico, home of the Very Large Array, aka best-in-the-world radio interferometer. Meetings all afternoon, luckily things ran late and my presentation now is first thing tomorrow, slides were not so much ready-to-go, now somewhat better.

Running 48:27 [2]

Finally got out for an outdoor run around Victoria. Still dark for first half, but at least no rain. Was fun running along the coastline, first around inner harbour, then over bridge and kept going west for awhile. On the way back tried a pickup, but had a hamstring twinge after 1 min. Not bad, but not worth pushing, still needs time. And maybe a concerted effort at strengthening. Not actually sure if rest or strengthening is more important at this point.

Strength 14:00 [0]

10 min abs + 2 min back + 2 min side plank

Today was a workshop learning about the software to propose for time on the super-duper new mm telescope in Chile, named ALMA. Pretty exciting, although it's easing into its awesomeness. Currently it has 9 antennas, will have 16 when open observations, but full capacity will be 50, which will dwarf all other mm telescopes on the planet. Intimidating!

Treadmill in the gym, was dark and rainy out. Morning resting HR 59, so not terrible, but after so much rest would expect it lower if I were truly healthy. So didn't run hard, just 9 min/mi pace with some 'Random' program hills thrown in.

Strength 6:00 [0]

Arms again, not that they are totally recovered from 2 days ago. Push ups moving up: 12-11-10, and then same on overhead tricpes and pulldowns. Middle upper back was well sore from the pulldowns the other day!

Crosstrainer 20:00 [2]

And the elliptical. The machine here tells you to do different things like squat, lean back, legs only, push with arms, pull with arms, reverse, in various combinations, which spices it up a bit! You do 1 min off, and then 1 min with some combination of extras.

Quick set of 10 min abs and 2 min back in afternoon coffee break. Talk given this morning, phew! But seem to have a sore throat, boo, hope it doesn't turn too bad. Figure I've already gotten 1 cold this winter, hopefully this one's related and immune system can deal well!

University of Washington, Course 7 from a Cascade event a bit ago.

Conference lasted too late, so heading out skiing didn't make sense, and was even dark by the time we got to UW campus. Luckily Dan had a little headlight I could borrow so that helped seeing the map, and mostly the campus was well lit, just a few times when down back hillsides that weren't on normal lit zones.

Legs burned to start, despite warmup, mostly calves. Hmph. Maybe didn't drink enough water during conference. I wanted to try to run pretty hard, but don't feel like I managed that, HR wasn't that hard, I just wasn't killing it out there. Was trying to focus on always knowing the next step, which worked pretty well. Also did avoid directly running into any students!

A few times was a bit confused by map, like at 7- took a bit to be sure stairs were being marked by a darker shade of brown. And now I think that the hashed black lines are probably marking overhangs, but didn't really get that while running, thought it was out-of-bounds perhaps... and leaving the start was super-duper tricky! Multilevel parking area, guess if you were really racing, you could have kinda scoped that out beforehand.

Ug, gross. It snowed for the first half of the night, and rained for second half, so there was a good 4-5" of slush on the sidewalks. Very cold feet, and I had to try to run daintily around the bus stops where people were waiting so as to not splash slush at them...

Wow, fantastic ski on really great trails and snow at Callaghan Valley in Whistler! Wonderful sunny day, not too cold, and neat to ski where the Olympics just were. Ski-O 1:26:27 intensity: (26:27 @2) + (30:00 @3) + (20:00 @4) + (10:00 @5)

Ski-O at Whistler, thanks to planning and organizing by Adrian! The "Swedish Misery Course" 15.6k long, 2 sides of the map at Lost Lake, with some bits blanked out to make you concentrate more, and some bits on narrow snowshoe trails to make things as most like narrow Swedish trails as possible, although the snowshoe trails were even more difficult, actually!

Off the start, tried some snowshoe trails to 1, which turned out to not be the smartest plan, but I was nervous about going through a blanked out bit to start. Also tried to go to number 15 from number 5(=16), but didn't get quite as far as Charlotte, who went all the way up the big hill before realizing, whoops! Other than that, hesitated on a long let 7 to 8, confused by the blanking-out, and not feeling totally at home at one junction, passed by friend Shara, who gets props for being way more together on that part than me!

First long ski-o of the season, and enough with the blanking out and occasionally snowshoe trails to have to be focused and thinking all the time, awesome!

XC skiing - dp 1:04:37 intensity: (27:16 @1) + (32:51 @2) + (4:12 @3) + (18 @4) 9.59 mi (6:44 / mi) +125m 6:29 / mi

Double pole, double pole, double pole! Didn't get much in this morning, so did a good dp session around some of the flatter trails, but still some hill, and did the spastic narrow-trail skate up those. Still had mapholder, so kept on following where I was, picking out features here and there, got more difficult as sun set.

A River Rd. rollerski at 15F, think that's the coldest so far... anyways, went out, intending to double pole out for 45 min, then turn around and skate back in. But elbow started feeling niggly at 36 min, so converted to no poles early.

At least had some fun maps to look at! Peter brought some printed ski-o maps over last night, so looked at Lygna Nord on the way out, was interesting with lots of little trail networks, although a bit distracting to have whoever's QR track over the trails in places. Way back, looked at Pwll Du, a fantastic old-mining area in Wales (foot-o). Interesting to look at the map now, because when I ran there, had only orienteered for a few months, and didn't use all those fantastic nobbly contours- would love to go back and give another try!

Eep, woke up way late, and starving, so snuck in a bowl of cereal before heading out to rollerski. Definitely missing Alex, much less fun without company, although mapboard at least made it less boring.

15 min double pole, then out and back double bump intervals (Alex's version, so way back is longer than mine), and then 2 x 3 min dp intervals up the first hill, some no poles and more dp on way back in.

Looked at Ånn map, still not sure what some of the best route choices are, first control is super-duper tricky in little trails, or way around on skateable ones. Also had a sprint foot-o map for variety on the warm down, Southern sprint champs at Sussex Uni.

Note

Puzzled by resting HR being highish again today. Yesterday was not a hard workout. Can the stress of driving 8h in one day explain?

Note

Lots of resolutions this time of year. Feel like I'm already in one, with the 2000 control challenge, and am totally still set on going for that. Think I'm in a good place with over 800 heading into winter, but will need to keep up the o-training spring and summer for that!

Other goals:
ski-WOC: be under 15% back in one race, under 20% back in all
3k: 10:10, last springs PR was 10:20, would be nice to bring that down
5k: 17:30, current PR is 17:45

So will be aiming for these!

Lotsa chat, caught up on the baby, weekend runs/snowshoes. Paul was wearing inov8s with metal studs, not the light orienteering edition, something a bit sturdier/heavier, does make sense for winter trail running actually!

Boo Fahnstock Park! I drove up the 5h from DC, and they closed the park for skiing mid-afternoon because of a wee bit of rain (actually, don't know how hard it rained, I wasn't there yet). Way bummed when I showed up at the entrance and the ranger told me. Ah well. At least it's pretty much on the way home to Poughkeepsie, so just continued on and went for a rollerski as soon as I got there.

Rollerski was fine, double poled first 26 minutes then skating. Elbow doesn't hurt like a few days ago, but I am now just really scared of it hurting and am really aware of it. Will ease into the dp stuff, I guess...
