ahr:142 max:167

A nice noonie run with Alejandro, up to Atkins on trails + around + back down. Lots of running training talk, Alejandro probably does the most training planning of our group... He is the one who doesn't really like trails though, messes up the pace he's supposed to run each run. Why to train with HR and not min per mile....

Drills 7:43 intensity: (1:09 @1) + (6:24 @2) + (10 @3) 0.57 mi (13:33 / mi)

And, Alejandro joined me for drills! In fact, he suggested them, nice to do them + have the company!

ahr:132 max:172

And finally, some hillwork! Headed out to Amethyst brook and did 20 x 1 min, uphill, in sets of 5. It started raining on set 2 and just settled in, slippery rocks towards the end... felt ok, pretty strong for the earlier ones in the set, but burning legs towards the end. Was pretty much 1 min on 45s off, heading back downhill, then 4 min heading all the way down hill again between sets.

No ankle tweaks even, woo! Was focusing on keeping it from turning inwards.

Strength 14:01 [1]
ahr:78 max:94

Standard core, always a bit harder after intervals...

Note

Hm, so slightly depressing physical therapy appointment, although I guess it wasn't really new news. My PT, Marlo, thought there was little she could do to help me to strengthen my ankles, because they're quite strong already. Nothing at all seems wrongs with tendons/ligaments, and from how I describe the pain, it really must be from inside the ankle joint itself, some issue with cartilage or bone surfaces. Bah.

So the only approach is to try to minimize the inflammation within the joint and see if I can brace and/or tape in order to avoid the ankle getting into the position that brings on the pain (i.e. toe-up eversion). If none of this is able to make much of a difference, then she agrees getting an MRI after WOC and seeing if an arthroscopic procedure could clean up the joint a bit. She also suggested my ankles weren't going to get any better if I kept up this 'mountaineering' business and just wanted to make sure I was aware of that. Think I am.

Okidoke. Mission try to make this better!

Also, stitches are out, doesn't look too bad, although still a bit swollen- suppose I also bruised a bit if I hit the pavement hard enough to get the stitch-requiring laceration!

ahr:129 max:142

And training times! Headed to Moreau with Ian for one last run around amazing woods before embargo for next year's Team Trials (starts June). Was super-duper packed with folks for the beach, all parking lots full by the time we left, seemed like!

This was hiking up up up the hill, slowish.

Orienteering 48:52 intensity: (18 @0) + (9:59 @1) + (38:07 @2) + (28 @3) 3.15 mi (15:31 / mi) +147m 13:33 / mi
ahr:137 max:156

First 7 controls of Day 2 Red course from Classic Champs 2010. Lots of long legs, which was kinda what I wanted to train, so perfect! Executed pretty well, didn't out run my ability to follow the map, which I had done a few times actually while racing. But then again, was running quite a bit easier.

Tried to really focus on having a full plan to each control, including an easy-to-follow way in, not just the broad brush strokes of getting close. I think it mostly worked.

Anyways, was such a super-delight to be running on that map, in that terrain. Both are amazing. =)

Mini made-up control pick to kill an extra ~15 minutes I had to play up top. Right at the end, lost contact. Actually, completely confused how that happened... too high?

Running 10:54 [1] 0.93 mi (11:43 / mi)

Tumble down hill. But actually not pushing it too much, didn't feel like inviting ankle tweaks...

Day 5 - Mt. Tom Farsta

Woo, and got to race the final one, and it went really well, won the race! Ok, so it wasn't really Day 5 for me, and probably I know Mt. Tom better than most... but eh, still really happy with how things went, few mistakes on my part, and kept it going when tired. Did take lots of water stops, probably the most I ever have in 1 race: 4! And had a gel right before the start, mmm Peppermint Stick!

Start was pretty crazy, I just didn't move until I figured out where I wanted to go, was behind lots of people. Some people had split some direction right from the start, then people split more as trails became available. I choose the same way as JJ, Eddie, Alex, then we went down along the river trail before cutting up to the cliff. Eddie led that charge, kinda followed on up, which took some motivating! To 2, took off on a bearing, then continued on it despite Eddie heading left- never know when a fork is actually going to hit! But ended up punching right together. Then off to 3, awesome, water! But Eddie didn't take any so he was gone.

Did my own think up to 5, then pretty much took the line to 5, but got a bit left of it and slightly confused right at the end to 5, was too high, even though I had placed myself left of the line earlier and tried to correct.

To 6 was fine, saw Greg A. there, but we immediately took off in different directions. Cruised over to 7, then whoa, uphill hike to 8, just flat enough to run, but dragged on and on. At 8 took a good map-look pause, decided for the road option, so bailed down at a NW angle and then booked it on the road.

Saw Sergei just after I punched my 9, and then was the 2nd to the halfway punch. Eddie was coming in right after me though, and I knew we would have the same first forking, because we did the first lap too and only 2 laps. But he took off immediately in some strange direction, so alone for the hike up to the saddle.

Was happily surprised to see Sergei at #2 for the lap, the first shared control. Hm, wonder which of us has shorter forks from here on... Mine looked pretty short and we immediately headed different directions from there, so figured I might have some chance of beating him. To #3 was a lovely tumble down a reentrant/along a stream, but then kinda messed up after climbing cliff from stream junciton, thought the rocky hill was going to have my cliff on it, but one too far norht. 4-5-6 all smooth and pretty much straight, except to avoid cliffs.

For the final route choice, looked for some sensible thing to do about the marsh at the end, decided I should go straight along river trail, through yellow, then hope over spur and check out if the marsh was actually crossable, would be silly to loose time going around if it were. But didn't seem like it (although Brendan reports it is), so did go around in the end. Then race on in!

Yeah!! Got to play for Day 3 of the 5 day, Alex's sprint on the UMass campus. So of course I had a few advantages, like commuting through large portions of the map everyday, and oh, not having done two earlier races in the day, but ended up in 4th, to Greg A., Eddie, and Sergei, not crazy far back, so happy with that!

Pretty smooth all through, but did not feel practiced at reading my control descriptions, my brain hurt trying to adjust the location told to me by my control description onto what it actually meant on the map. So should practice that more for sure!

Enjoyed the trickiness of 3-4, had never been their before and then apparently made definitely the right choice (won the split) to 8, despite the fact I thought I messed it up at the time... hm.

Note

And had to go get more stitches (bike accident)... I had to break much more suddenly than I was expecting on my bike and so flying-Ali over the handlebars, splat on the road... whoops!

Was super embarrassed, because there was really no reason to fall, so I just quickly scampered back onto my bike and sheepishly hurried on my way towards work. But then there was kind of a lot of blood emerging from my chin, and when I went to go clean up in the bathroom at work, I realized that there was kind of a gaping gash that was definitely going to require stitches...

So over to uni health center. The doc knew me from helping me with my bad asthma a bit ago, he's an avid mountain biker, friendly guy. The cut's about an inch long, needed 11 stitches (to help avoid scarring), they're to come out next Tues but way better than the cut on my foot, no need to avoid running at all!

No other major damage, although I did break one of my fav lunch boxes + really squished 2 bananas upon impact, apparently...
5 PM

Running 46:43 [2] 5.64 mi (8:17 / mi) +97m 7:52 / mi

Post-work scamper around Emily Dickinson, hill version + University Drive version. Nice out, chin didn't hurt too bad while running. I meant to do hill intervals at lunch, but kinda just wanted to sit tight through the day, make sure I didn't develop a headache, and let the adrenaline wear off- was well jittery all morning!

Hammies, 15s, before heading over to Gagarin's for A-meet stuff + pizza! Unfortunately I totally spaced and just started digging into the pesto pizza, whoops! This version of pesto has almonds in it.... so mouth/throat started sweeling up, but all good with 2 benedryl. Apparently one of *those* days...

Breakheart Green QuickRoute

I can see my hesitation while on the trail at 4, that I totally ran straight by 12 and that something is strange around 13? I hung that control and am 100% sure it's on the huge boulder on the east side of the rock wall.. curious. Without major adjustments, 7 is also not on the right cliff, perhaps whoops, but perhaps Garmin is just lying too. Although it really is way off to 13....

Not many surprises. What are good things to be looking for in QR analysis again, besides obvious mistakes? Flow?

Alrighty, well you can't PR every time, I suppose... 2 seconds off 2 weeks ago, but won the race, so that's some consolation. And, biggest challenger was friend Jake Whitcomb from way back- he and I skied together in the Western Mass little kids league from age, mmm ~8? So great to see him, although actually, in the race, I led from the beginning and didn't know it was him breathing down my neck from the first hill to the halfway mark... but he at least provided some good inspiration to really take it away on that long stretch down by the river!

Running 9:17 intensity: (42 @1) + (7:59 @2) + (36 @3) 1.02 mi (9:06 / mi) +17m 8:39 / mi

Warm down with Jake, catching up. Apparently he's doing a masters or PhD (forgot to ask!) at MIT in systems engineering? He's real focused on renewable energy stuff, will be doing either some policy or engineering work this summer in DC, cool to chat. Also, he was pretty enthusiastic about going out orienteering in/around Boston-land next year. Someone remind me to get him linked up to CSU in the fall!

On way back, ran into Phil who was checking on some Cem Hill things too, good to chat just immediately.

Little post-work jaunt around Emily Dickinson (hilly version), not roasting hot, but very sticky. And ran into astro-friend Christina on one of the trails. Suppose those are the trails right behind her house, perhaps expected!

After, headed out to see the French-Canadian film Monsieur Lazhar, about a Algerian refugee who ends up being a school teacher for a class whose previous teacher just committed suicide (in the classroom no less!). Lots of issues going on. I could kinda sorta pick up the french, but with the subtitles sitting right there at the bottom of the screen, hm, unavoidable to look at!

The local group that meets up to talk in French weekly suggested the outing, and chatted with a few of them afterwards. My French isn't amazingly worse than theirs, so maybe I will be less scared and join the group more often!

Water delivery to some far away controls... and ran into Dartmouth friends Courtney and Tom, who I haven't seen in ages, including since they had 2 kids who were also present. Their names: Kepler and Peak. Kinda awesome =). I mean, if you like astronomy and mountain climbing... Totally people I should have tried getting more into orienteering though, but now they're moving to colorado- boulder area, anyone want to adopt them?

And the Green course, because I wimped out on Red and just kinda felt like a nice more medium-distanced challenge, which it was. Although, occasionally, especially early on, less of a challenge, as I'd set the controls...

Comparing with Brendan afterwards, some not-great route choices. Out to the road was better to 4, by ~30s and so was road route to 7, which is kind of not indicated fully that it should be on the map. Some unmapped greenbriar nastiness (my way) and a nice trail leading nearly to the control (Brendan's way). I also existed 11 quite poorly, and did not make perfect sense (perhaps because of an extra trail) of the immediate approach to 12, ran past it, I think... QR should tell exactly, but that's for tomorrow...

Note

Soo, finally got to sports doc to try to figure out what is wrong with my right ankle. It has really sharp pain when it everts (turns inwards) in a toe-up position, which frequently happens in orienteering, turns out.

Upon prodding and pulling my ankle around, doc decides unlikely to be the tendon that hangs out on the outer back side of the ankle, where things hurt. More likely to be something in the joint. So down for an X-ray which took forever and ever, but that came back negative for anything obvious (although you can see the bone having formed a spur on the front of my ankle from all that crunching, awesome.) The current hypothesis is cartilage issues between the talus and tibia, so not much to do other than try to strengthen so it doesn't end up in the problem position. If that doesn't work, take an MRI and see what's up more indepth...

So, back to PT. But it's not a bad thing to get ankle strengthening in anyways, so won't be wasted time even if it doesn't solve this prob.

Streamering at Nobscot for NEOC meet in 3 weeks. Got there at 6.30ish, scampered around, pretty dusky when I got back to the car. As always, mostly nice, open, delightful woods, some blueberry, some poison ivy. One area with giant big scary dogs close to a property boundary, but not sure there was much of a fence/boundary, moving the control that was near there.... and moving one other one because just not a happily mapped area. No reason to confuse folks.

Fun to be out in the woods! Mosquitos descended any time I stopped though, tis that season now...!

Millions of dogwalkers + dogs! But tis the place for it, suppose. All were well behaved, one was a super-duper cute puppy who ran with me for a bit. Gorgeous, gorgeous morning to be out!

Running full through the long course, some stops to number streamers. Think it's pretty ok, perhaps unhappy with one location. And really, there is poison ivy... (If you know you're super-allergic, there are sinks to wash up at Mt. Tom before the mass-start).

Strength 14:00 [1]

Day off running, whoa. Decided it would be good for the body, think this weekend might involve a fair bit... and have more vetting-setting type stuff next 2 days.

Normal core, 10 min abs, 2 min back, 2 min side-plank with a little bitt of SJJ action, getting back into them!

Strength 5:30 [1]

12s of hammie exercises

Note

Soo, remote observing went totally well. Some telescope issues now and again, but that'll happen in any run and the telescope operator was always there via chat able to reboot the backends, or weigh in on weird focus/pointing scans.

Except, very last 20 min, everything shut down. Eep! None of my 3 VNC windows were responding at all. Try disconnecting and reconnecting, no go. Try calling them on Skype, no go. Call their land line via Skype and get the telescope operator, who then gives me the heads up that there is a fire somewhere in the observatory! Yikes!! So yeah, my run ended then... Hoping it was a minor fire somewhere in the dormitory and not something getting fried in the telescope itself...

And early-for-noonies track session with Alejandro, Sergio and Sanjay. Humid!

Did 2 x (6 x 400 on, with 200 jogs), with 400 jog between sets

First set of 6 was all 4 of us, really good feeling to run in a pack like that. I'm super lucky to have these guys to train with! Second set, Sanjay and Sergio moved it up to 800s (they are more marathon training...) while Alejandro and I kept with 400s. Still we just kept running them side-by-side in even 81s,82s. Nice!

Zoning in on sub-10.15 3k on Sat, hopefully!

Running 22:00 [1]

Out the door at something like 6.15 am because I woke up early, but apparently wasn't awake enough to remember my Garmin, whoopsie! Did the same exact warmup as yesterday though, so should be a good estimate.

Orienteering 31:00 intensity: (3:00 @1) + (20:00 @2) + (8:00 @3)

A vague estimate of how long I was out there! Ran another course, in the drizzle, not enough that it was unpleasant. Was having a pretty fun run-around, until I went over on my ankle heading down a hill towards the end, boo!! Left ankle, which tends to be the floppier one. Perhaps at least a bit of time in the brace...

Pretty much spiked everything this time, which is how it should be when you've vetted every single control site!

Oh, and in any case, was maybe good I forgot the Garmin, as it's still recovering from last rainy session (i.e. has water in screen...) It seems to be very gradually leaving...

Note

Notes on some exciting stuff:
1) I might have seen a bear. Or not. I'm not sure, it was biggish and darkish and some ways away. In any case, not threatened.
2) Registered for CSU 50th, other orienteering folk better be going!
3) Remade plans for WOC travel. Friend Frederic suggested I go climb Mont Blanc with him afterwards, the day *after* I bought my ticket. But, Delta has a return-for-full refund before midnight the next day policy, so did that and now have a ticket back a few days later... Really super-duper psyched!! =) Hm, wonder if it's worth it to take my own hard plastic boots over. Will kinda cramp the packing-light mode...

Ran a course out at Earl's, for a change! Way more fun than vetting and examining every last nuance of control placement, map, etc. Got to run + fly! Although, there was some serious goofmuppeting at the beginning, entirely my own fault and not a cavity of PG's.

Wandering around Cem Hill, streamering + checking out controls. Two interactions with disk golf folk, one set totally nice, just wanted to give me a heads up they were about to throw a frisbee at me. Next set saw me darting into the woods and intoned that I shouldn't do that, there's *Disk Golf* going on. Well, yes, there is, but I also have business in the woods, so if you could just avoid throwing the thing point-blank at me, think we'll be ok...

Anyways, super-gorgeous day out, no bears, but definitely some poison ivy. Full leg cover req'd! Happy with most control sites, will test run courses sometime this week. Phil's been awesome consulting with, knows the area inside + out!

And... observing from Amherst, MA to telescope on Pico Veleta, Spain worked! Very psyched! Saw my 13CO(1-0) line clearly pop up above the noise, beautiful line profile due to rotation. Now if what I was actually looking for could go ahead and make itself known too, that'd be cool. The molecule HNC is the target... probably need a few more days of observing for it to come through. Or for me to obtain an upper limit, but that'd be less fun...

Wahoo! New PR by 9 seconds! Psyched to officially be faster than last year. But, missed the age-27 record by 3 seconds, ooh, I've got to get that... hope there are still some not-baking-hot 5k days left in the season!

Was drizzly-rainy all day, didn't seem like it was going to be that much fun. But eh, mid-50s and rainy is way better than mid-40s and rainy, didn't get too cold.

Only a skeleton crowd of the heartiest racers, no kids, no teens, but there was a faster guy than me who was the perfect rabbit for the race- he did 17.47 or so, I was pretty close to on his tail until the last 2/3s of the final mile. I must of faded, or he decided he really didn't want to be beaten by a girl. =)

Raced in my 212s again, nice and light even in the wet, and good traction. Did space-cadet my contacts though, so was a bit blind and slightly worried about misstepping in a hole during the whole race, gotta remember those next time!

Brought my West Point long map with, for entertainment. =) Should do that more often really. Also, brought my compass. Because it feels easier to read a map in my hand with a compass? West Point Long Blue

Oooh, this did not go well!

3 mega-mistakes, a few smaller ones. I think basically the problem was too much focus on running fast, and not enough on creating a plan or executing precisely. I particularly got in trouble on long legs, not successfully shifting from a running-fast mode following some big features, to actually placing myself exactly on the map and heading to the control feature.

I'm going to analyze more tonight, try to draw in my original plan, where I think I went, and also what I now think the best plan would be. Then I'll put my gps on top, see where I actually went....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And Routegadgeted. I drew my route first, then uploaded GPS, so if you want to see where I actually went, look at the GPS track version. Still, I pretty much knew where I was, the major being lost time, maybe didn't have it 100% figured out, but close.

Noted:
#3 - Totally did not see the route that went *around* that stinking hill! That was not a fun hill to climb, rocky and the trees growing among the rocks had evil thorns on their trunks, so you couldn't haul on them to help you up. Sergei's and Will's routes go around to the left...
#4 - My least fav boulder. Well, I got very close. And then I think, I went into a bit of a panic, instead of figuring things properly out. Almost certainly went faster into panic-mode seeing Ed and Neil also searching in the area. Bah!
#6 - Yeah, well, so, I should have followed my original plan, which was to be way more on the line, then being tempted by the nice runnability of the road, which left me far too high and with no clue where I was. Then also, made the second mistake in the circle, pretty much on top of the cliff, probably because the control was oh-so-neatly tucked away. So then went way backwards and repeated, with full confidence was able to find.
#14 - Shoulda cut the corner, looked up at it, but it was steep and the map said green and so I just went around on the road, boo laziness.

West Point Middle, Red

Raced well, some small errors on first few, just off by a bit, not in full touch approaching the circle. More precise circle-envisioning would be good. But was running fast and really wasn't that far off on any of them. AP even says no time lost, actually, although there definitely was, esp on #1 and #4.

Oh, and did anyone go via the road to #14? I gave it a quick thought, then didn't, but given rockiness of the area, I think it might just have been the best route!

But then there was that piddly little leg, 6->7. Went on a wrongish compass bearing, and was waiting for my second little-path crossing, but it didn't happen, panic! Turn around, head back, see a boulder, go to it, my control. Phew. But that was bad. What should have happened: look up, see cliff, go just below it, a smidge to left of nose. And today, got the news that I'm allowed to remotely observe from the telescope in Spain next week- woo! Less romantic, but *way* more convenient then going there myself.
