Ski-O 1 [3]

Woo! First ski-o of the season at Garnet Hill by Aims! So happy to have found out about this (thanks Adrian), it worked perfectly into the plan to drive from Waitsfield, VT to White Plains, NY for the day.

A chilly one, so bundled up and refused to take off jacket or windpants, think it was the right call. Loaned a map holder for myself, then there was also an extra for Tom to try out and Aims even lent him no-wax skis, which I think made his exeperience way better than it would have been otherwise. (Icy -> klister = no fun).

I had a good race, it was definitely made more fun by the score-o nature, trying to figure out how to go about in the right order. Got Adrian by a few minutes, probably due to 2 major route choices. This stuff is so fun, and Tom had a blast too, he even suggested we try to go to Mendon Ponds for the meet in two weeks!

And a work day for people applying to jobs before Jan 1st... so Tom and I went out for a midday run, before the temperature plumeted too far. We first went up towards Mad River, turned around after enough hill and then ran some of the flats before I dropped him off at the covered bridge and ran up to the Mad River parking lot on my own. Becoming chilly!

XC skiing 2:00:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @1) + (50:00 @2) + (10:00 @3)

Skiing at Trapps with Stephi and Eric for the first half, then on my own for some double-pole and no-pole fun. So great skiing there, hilly, long trails. They don't yet have awesome snow, but it'll do.

We went up to the cabin via the 40 year trail (actually just re-named Chris's Run), then around the Haul road and over via Oslo before actually stopping there for a Clif Bar break. Then down the only option of Parizo (so fun!) before I started by double-pole + no-pole session on the lower trails. Great times!

XC skiing race 13:00 [4] 4.8 km (2:42 / km)

Santa's Revenge skate 5k at Sleepy Hollow

Yeah low-key race, but with good competition! I was beaten by another woman, Sabra from Trapps. I was faster on the uphills, but she could recover everything I gained on the down, boo! So frustrating to have that happen, but that's what I get for not bringing my race skis out East this trip, I guess.

Good to see other skier-folk and get a good interval workout in (4 x 1.2k loop, with a big up and a big down). Oh yeah, that's what breathing lots of cold air is like. (Hack, hack.) =)

Teaching Tom to skate! Loops of the meadow, then out and back on the low green loop. It's a bit squirrely out for a beginner...

Oh! And speaking of squirrels, a little mouse ran across the snow in front of us at one point. It needs to find a winter home or grow a white coat, was very visible!

Sole representative of the family Christmas run tradition, others thought that yesterday's effort counted and/or 12°F was colder than they wanted to run in. Nice little jaunt, although *no one* else was out, only saw cars on the busy road, Noxon.

Yeah! Family long run on the rail trail!

NanC suggested a 2h run, I wimped out and said maybe we should do just 1h30. Then Stephi and Eric wanted to join the party, so we decided it was worthwhile to drive over to the Walkway over the Hudson section so everyone could partake of the awesomeness.

Stephi and I ran over the bridge (gorgeous!) and up a bit on the Highland side, turning around at 25 min. She stopped when we encountered Buddy-walking Eric and I kept going, passing the car and going another 21 minutes towards Lagrange land.

Great that we have a rail trail, but I do have to say, I get enough flat running in Toledo...

"Grand Tour" of Scottsville, after Christmas brunch with Tom's family and before going to see the Genesee Valley Country museum Christmas Tour. Very cool, learned the history of why/how/what traditions became involved when New York State made Christmas an official holiday in 1849. And then awesome buffet food, featuring most importantly, bread pudding. Yum!

Rochester's Reindeer Run 5k

Kinda doing the 38 degrees and raining thing, but a brave horde of reindeer assembled at Rochester's Museum of Play to head out and do a 5k. (They provided antlers to the first 1500 registered, wish I knew earlier!)

Anyways, lined up with the crowd, saw a few gals who looked like they could be fast. One girl in a pink top went out pretty quick, so I stayed by her side for the first third of a mile, then pulled ahead and never saw her again.

A good time for it being gently wavy (actually on the Inner Loop, for those familiar) and some sharp curves on icy/snowy/slush. I'm not sure how exact distance was as I didn't Garmin (need to replace pin before wearing it on my wrist again...)

First men were in 15:30s, I was 15th overall, always with people around.

Wahoo! Snow in Toledo! Skis on and over to Ottawa Park, where I got to explore the interior of the golf course for the first time. *Lots* of sledding must have happened on Sunday, every single incline had been packed down. And in classy Toledo style, some beer cans left here and there...

Just at the end, found the mountain bike trail through the woods, twisty-turny good ski-o practice!

Spriddle times! Had a good solid race, maybe not the right route choice to #3, and then almost missed the easiest control in the thick stuff, the house... luckily saved on that!

Cold feets with all the water crossings though, so thankful for the warm building waiting afterwards!!!

Running 5:00 [1]

And SMOC for 3rd place in the 8pt category! With Tom on Orange, Roddy on Yellow, Al on Green and myself anchoring on Red.

Despite the horrendous weather (my least favorite ever - 34 degrees and raining), it was super fun times, bouncing around under the shelter with everyone else not running that given leg, generally trying to stay out of the major ick.

And I had a great last leg. Smooth running and I guess was faster than the guys running the last legs on the 4pt course? Perhaps the fastest time of the day? But not 100% sure because who knows how the first split was determined...

Anyways, way better than last night's jog around in the dark. Felt pretty speedy and I think was doing mostly good things. One or two small bobbles.

Yeah, that's not really a race effort now, is it? Competitiveness fail. Because I was so late (traffic?) or the snow in the headlight or not warming up or my light always feeling like it was going to fall off because not pony-tail anchored?

Did have fun, apart from the time I attempted to cross the powerline thicket of death - got about 10m into the above-head thornbushes before calling it quits...

Unfortunately, I slammed my Garmin into a tree which tore it off my wrist. Bent pin and slightly stripped hole in the plastic. Hoping a new pin will make it ok...

Note

Woo, did the Chill! And really, I was only uncomfortably cold once, right after the paddle section. So adventure racing in 20 degree weather can actually be fun!

The paddle was the roughest part for me. I was third or fourth in the water, but then was steadily passed by 10 or probably even more teams, which was a bit disheartening. I'm sure there is both kayak technique and kayak strength that I'm lacking.

After the paddle, I stopped for a few minutes at HQ, getting down a more chewy than normal Clif bar (should have opted for w4j's brownie instead) and warming my fingers up. No problem biking to the O course start (Highland), then time to have fun in the woods!

I went counterclockwise around the loop: 48, 51, 50, 46, 45, 44 (holy moly evilly thick swamp!), 52, 47, 49, 40, 42, 41, 43. I'm not sure if cutting from 50 to 46 was worth having to come around to 43 at the end? But maybe. All smooth besides the evil swamp and the missing (but later restored?) 40.

Going to 41, I got to chat a smidge with jayxc and Mindy, who didn't have to go and still get 43 afterwards. By the time I got to the transition, they were long gone, but I figured it wasn't so bad if I were really even kinda close, so time to try to be a speedy biker!

A runner asked me if I were doing an adventure race as I cycled back the roads to HQ, even asked which one - maybe he'll try next year. =) then nothing notable, until I broke the derailleur off the bike frame at the second control of the single track. I didn't even understand what I'd done at the time, just that things weren't working and I at least needed the derailleur out of the way so I could roll the bike. So I rigged it up by looping the chain around the lever for the bike seat and also used the Velcro of my saddle bag. Then time to run avec bike! Made very sure to get all the shortcuts...

A very fun second adventure race, do look forward to more!

Had an issue coming back with tree-amputation happening on the bike trail. They made me go cross-country to the train tracks and walk along them. Because walking along active train tracks is safer... (it really might be).
