Note

Day off. Battled my data the whole day, and think I have it- a Brackett-gamma image of a nearby spiral galaxy from ground-based NIR narrow-band imaging!! So psyched to see those HII regions come out about an hour ago, phew...

And foot still seems fine, no signs of infection, being good to it.

Note

Ummm. Dropped a knife on my foot while fixing myself lunch and blood spurted out. So now have 4-5 stitches in my ankle and a tetanus booster and am not supposed to run til mid-week, boo! Stitches out next Friday, most important thing is to keep it from getting infected. No racing tomorrow. =(

Luckily went to the university health center and not the ER- since I was actively bleeding, I was the most important person and got seen first, while it might have been hours in the ER!

Running race 1:05:29 intensity: (7 @0) + (4 @1) + (5 @2) + (3 @3) + (6:55 @4) + (58:15 @5) 7.56 mi (8:40 / mi) +306m 7:42 / mi

Skyline Scramble!

Beautiful day, still tricky and intense trail, but that's part of the reason it's fun! Started out, hanging on to a group of 4 guys at the beginning, but then 3 of them pulled away and I and another dropped back, but then he dropped back further and I was running alone from mile 3 or so.

Definitely was slowing at the end, Sam and company caught about 45 seconds in the last mile, I think? Partly tired, partly a bit zoned out without anyone around. Finished only about 30 seconds up.
11 AM

Running long 54:58 intensity: (1:39 @1) + (17:56 @2) + (19:20 @3) + (16:03 @4) 4.78 mi (11:30 / mi) +124m 10:38 / mi
ahr:142 max:161

And making it a longer workout, a nice run around on the trails afterwards with Sam and Jeff and joined by Ross after we found him at the Sheepfold. Good times!

XC skiing 1:14:49 intensity: (17:46 @1) + (33:08 @2) + (15:01 @3) + (8:54 @4) 11.36 mi (6:35 / mi) +37m 6:31 / mi

Rollerski out on Falls Rd. with Alex and Ken. Trying new territory, was good except for roughness of first 1.7 mi or so of pavement, starting after that would be lovely, felt lower/slower traffic than River Rd., but maybe that was when we were out there (mid-afternoon) too.

I got in a bit extra as they were both a bit late, other than that, 20 min no-pole, 20 min pole, 20 min no-pole and a little double-pole sprint up a gradual hill at the end. Woo! Sunny lovely day to be out and again, rollerskiing with company is a million times better!

Stopped by the Gagarins on the way back, saw the new spiffy bike and tried rollerskiing on their driveway.

Note

Day off. I was in charge of department colloquium for the first time, so involved some of me being stressed/trying to organize!! (Lost my keys at some point during the day, hope they find their way back.) Our speaker was Bruce Elmegreen, who is maybe the only astronomer who works in industry, as such. He's at IBM. Go them for keeping him, because he manages to do some really good astronomy and I think in exchange lets IBM know of the general and approaching computing needs of the astronomy community.

Running 20:30 [2]

Running up Mt. Tom, from outside gate (so I didn't get locked in!) to the start. Hamstring twingy for the first few minutes, then fine.

Orienteering 1:03:31 [3] 4.9 km (12:58 / km) +260m 10:15 / km

Well, some legs went well, a few bad-ish mistakes though, maybe a silly route choice or two too....

1- fairly smooth
2- fine, took the green cliff gap
3- confused by contours, didn't read it as on the back side of a hill
4- lost focus toward the end of the leg. I came out on the trail kept running, then was confused by how the reentrant was in front of me, was on the hill west of the spur I wanted, but wasn't sure, so bailed to trail and back, argh! should have had the confidence to relocate without back to trail...
5, 6- fine, easy
7- plan was up to the flatish bit on the spur above, then contour around til trail and big flat area was obvious. but i mistook a lower flat area for the one I wanted and ran down to it too early, took a bit to figure things out, then had to hike back up
8, 9 - fine
10- perhaps getting tired, mistook a far lower cliff for the one I wanted, and climbed too much anyways, should have stayed lower
11- straight. over the hill. ok route though perhaps

Splits:
1- 3:09, 2- 4:42, 3- 2:27, 4- 11:36, 5- 1:33, 6- 2:05, 7- 6:39, 8- 8:15, 9- 2:33, 10- 10:42, 11- 8:13, 12- 1:13, Finish- 20 = 1:03:31.

Thanks so so much to Phil, who streamed the course, was so nice to have that!!

Running warm up/down 17:22 [1]

And down the hill back to car, this time on trails.

Of course, while reading how to get down, crunched the right ankle (which is the crunchy one) kinda hard. The crunching has been really minimal lately, hope this doesn't start it off again, but don't think it's too bad...

Running 51:50 intensity: (25:55 @2) + (25:55 @3) 7.0 mi (7:24 / mi)

Modified Atkins noon-run with Sanjay, Sergio and Barry. Pretty mellow on the way up to the reservoir, then we tempo-ed on the way down, Sergio and I stuck together. My left hamstring felt a bit iffy beforehand, but no real pain while running and feels better now afterwards... will keep track and see how it is tomorrow morning. It's not normal, but I don't know exactly what is up with it/ if training is harmful. Definitely no true speed work until it feels 100%.

Also, I forgot socks in my rush to get there after dept morning coffee, so have new blisters. Argh!

XC skiing 1:02:38 intensity: (52 @0) + (3:06 @1) + (43:33 @2) + (9:56 @3) + (5:11 @4) 10.46 mi (5:59 / mi) +80m 5:51 / mi
ahr:133 max:168

Late afternoon ski with Alex on River Rd, 15 min w/o poles, 16.5 min with poles, ~15 min without poles, 15 min double pole, similar to last Friday. Legs were tired to start, but better after warming up. Took the hill on the way out kinda hard, force V2, HR got decently high.

Way back, we were surprised by a familiar face parked on the side of the road, PG come by to check out what this rollerskiing is all about! He got some photos and video. Just watched the video, looks alright, we're no-poling at the time.

Dinner afterwards at mine with Alex, Peter and Gail, delicious salad, yummy pizza and scrumptious dessert! Nice to have folks over! Apparently it's time to organize my O-maps: big question, by location or chronologically?
