Orienteering 32:58 [4]
20c

US Champs Middle @ Chattahoochee Bend State Park

A good one! Some hesitations here and there, but otherwise smooth and pretty fast sailing. Was way fun, more technical stuff with the open rock and green and rocks and ups and downs. Almost *no* trail running, very different than yesterday. Still trumped by Sergey V. and a visiting (?) Finn for the Red course win.

The hesitations:
#1 - Wrong rootstock first, didn't even see it hanging out there on the edge of the circle. (5ish seconds?)
#10 - Bit off on bearing, had to search left (5 seconds?)
#14 - Scared coming through the green, stopped slightly short in a too-vague reentrant, mini boulder! (10 seconds?)
#16 - Um, I totally, 100% thought that those two black lines were cliffs, they were a trail, that would have been a way faster way to the spectator control, (20 seconds)
#17 - Boo, hesitant on way down and then was nearly at the darn cliff, looked at it, decided it was a boulder and was trying to find it on my map. Moved a few steps and saw my control at the 'boulder'. (15 seconds?)

Orienteering race 1:29:26 [4] ***
16c

SML/TT Long @ Chattahoochee Bend State Park

A bit heavy on the trial running up front, but generally a good, enjoyable course that did test your navigation as well as running speed, and really switched it up with some true flood-plain o towards the end- fast and flat and not so many features...

Beginning half had some quite normal spur-and-reentrant type terrain, fairly well sprinkled with trails, which were generally helpful to use. The forrest is far more green (leaves!) than up north, and some vines to thwart ya here and there.

My race went pretty well, felt in control of having a plan always to the next control and execution went well except once, to #3, where I lost ~4 minutes, ouch. I can now see what happened, I was farther north that I thought when I arrived in a stream bed, but I didn't quite realize that, and took an earlier reentrant with a dry ditch, because it at least seemed like it could be my swampy reentrant at the beginning- I mean, it's been dry, maybe the swamp isn't really there, thought I. Eh, but wrong.... Took me far too long to relocate, and I really didn't ever figure out what I'd done while I was out there.... bah.

Pretty smooth sailing through the rest of the first half, then botched the post-spectator control because I thought it was taped all the way and accidentaly followed the tape to the GO control... whoopsie! Ed witnessed this, embarrasing =). Then was scared of the flat flood-plain o but went to 11 via 14 which felt safe. Others went fine after that too.

So a good day, but not great because of that 4 min one + detour via GO control. Also need to work up on turning up running speed, but hope that will come with a bit more O this season...

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]

Warm up around and around, spying on what was happening on in the men's race. Obviously a route choice from the spectator control.... Girly warm-down plus Ian, playing splits game.

Orienteering race 18:46 [4]
20c

Sprint at University of West Georgia

Mostly a good race, but I'm disappointed because I was yet again caught out by a wrong-side-of-wall trick!!! Argh! I read the control description, knew it was on south side of the wall, but didn't look hard enough at the map to decipher that the stair case indicated was actually fully blocked off by a black line/wall and not a way up. Bah!

Felt a bit slow in the beginning campus-building part, not so flow-y and the areas of light green with no apparent distinct border scared me. Didn't want to find myself in one! Second half with simpler navigation and less light green to worry about, I picked it up and started getting some top-10 splits compared to the whole field (only 8 seconds down to speedy Eddie on first route-choice leg). I choose left both times for route choice, happy with those choices, although I think going right for the first one, executed properly might be a smidge better.

Felt pretty good, left ankle I think is bruised in addition to having a healing blister? Hmph, but should heal quickly, I imagine...
