Battle Ax - Hike #8 in CC100

So this was a great hike to the tallest peak in the Bull of the Woods Wilderness, Battle Ax at 5558'. We saw snow, some cool alpine melt ponds, lots of wildflowers and truly amazing views of Jefferson, Hood, the Sisters, probably St. Helens and a few other non-ID'ed snow covered peaks. Saw only two other pairs of people, two women coming back from backpacking early on and a couple at the summit.

Perhaps equally notable as the hike was the remarkably terrible road there. We tried to do a different hike first, but were thwarted by active logging operations. So bailed to this one, but it required 7 miles of driving on forest roads that a low-clearance vehicle really had no business on. Cynthia prevailed, but only by going as slow as 3mph through some sections. Mountain biking would have been quicker.

Camping at Detroit Lake was fine, but not amazing. Next time we should book earlier to have a campsite further from the road and closer to the lake.

Shellberg Falls - Hike #3 from 100 Hikes in the Central Cascades (CC100)

We took off after prenatal yoga for our last pre-baby camping weekend. This was a moderate hike on the way down to Detroit Lake. Part on a dirt road through some cow pastures, then above Lower Shellberg Falls and *behind* Upper Shellberg falls. Quite neat to be behind the waterfall, looking through its curtain.

Then more moderate woodsy hiking around a loop back. Saw salmonberries but didn't eat them because we couldn't ID them at the time.

Strength 25:00 [1]

Prenatal yoga. Smaller class during the workday on Thursdays, unsurprisingly!

We went to a Science Pub talk all about the placenta in the evening. Was not the only pregnant gal there, by a long shot. Interesting stuff, the main research area of the speaker was in trying to figure out how to minimize damage to the fetus in cases where the mom has preeclampsia. Turns out male fetuses have much worse outcomes than female fetuses. Biology is soooo complex!!

Crosstrainer 22:00 [1]

Morning session on the super-elliptical!

Strength 45:00 [1]

Lunchtime pilates. Modified as necessary. Work at the barre to start off, very hamstring-stretching!

Hiking 1:10:00 [1] 3.4 mi (20:35 / mi)

Urban Hike #3 (first two were Mt. Tabor and Council Crest) with Tom at Powell Butte. Went up, did a loop at the top and came back down. We could see Mt. Hood, but not the other volcanoes, unfortunately. Lots of people out enjoying their 4th!
