Note

A great week hosting Tero and friends in Ontario. Sure it was cool hanging out at the Raptor's game with the multi World Champion but it was also very cool seeing some great results by young Canadian orienteers in Ottawa. Emily, Serghei, Igor and the most improved orienteer of the year - Eric Kemp, to name a few. Makes it easier when I'm feeling old (bloodied head, sprained ankle, sore knee, dsq'd) that the future is in some good hands.

Details of the week are here:

Francois Gonon's challenge to Canadian orienteering:
"I want to end my career racing WOC in Canada in 2014".

OK everyone. Where is it gonna be?

Orienteering 55:00 [3]

Ottawa middle and sprint. Messed up # 1 in middle, settled into a good rythym but then things got bloody and I also mispunched (two controls v. Close together). Would have been 40'ish seconds behind Mike Smith. Only my third ever dsq. That is three too many. Can't say I've run a good race since West Point and even that one was sloppy with flow. Very rusty with my control system and being out of shape doesn't help.

My new Halloween look:

Sprint: decided to run but lacked speed energy and got trapped by an unmarked wall. Fun sprint though. But running on pavement and concrete absolutely kills my knees. I'm hobbleing around now.

The O part of the day finished with an awesome talk by Thierry at Carleton.
He spends more hours a year orienteering (300-350) than most North
American orienteers spend training period. His message was if you dream it you can live it. Clearly MrPither and Kempster have dreams that are set higher than most North American orienteers.... their committment and dedication shows.

Ok I have to take care of my head injury. No Long race for the Wadd Squad. But Ottawa tourism sounds good. Love this city.

Note

So tomorow I startthe middle one minute behind Tero and one minute ahead of Ganon. What are my chances of:

a) catching Tero

b) staying ahead of Francois

c) hurting my knee

Running 1:00:00 [3]

Scootering (yeah and I felt the burn) around Toronto Islands while Dirk Diggler, Igor, Tero and matthieu jogged together on a long sprint style course. Frickin' cold day. -2C with the windchill. This area has so much potential as a sprint area or a longer race but with lotsa navigation using lotsa controls. I'd love to see 3 or 4 controls in the amusement park alone. Otherwise it is a pretty straight forward area to orienteer in. Thanks to TOC for the opportunity.

Followed by sweet platinum seats at the Raptors-Rockets game.
fun photos to appear soon.

Earlier in the day I was at the Hamilton Schools Cross Country Champs. And it was snowing! Brrrr. Chloe 1st, Olivia 5th, Emma 12th (looking good for TH3 THIRTY THR33 in RTH). Dalewood Golden Hawks first place girls team too.

Patrick Goeres won in 15:24 in 2006.
A fun evening and then off to the GHO clubhouse (aka East Side Mario's) for dinner where I gave Sudden my autograph! It will apparently go on his ceiling beside Emil Wingstedt's, Gunde Svan's, Per Gessle's and Björn Ulvaeus' autographs.

Running 50:00 [3]

TNT with Tero at Chedoke. Good GHO group out tonight (Sudden, Griz, Dang, Turbo and another 6 or so runners). A tough set of intervals Sudden set. Dang was representin' the club and kept with Tero for the first few but then Dang got dropped.

Tero's training in the Hammer today? 4.5 hours including GHO TNT and a re-run of the NAOC middle, the NAOC long and picking up some controls forgotten from the Giant's Rib Raid. Another day at the office!

Cycling 1:15:00 [3]

with Sudden to the Jolly Cut-King's Forest maps

Orienteering 30:00 [3]

RTH stuff. Training was much longer than this but lots of standing around stuff. While you are never more than 500m from a major road it seldom feels like you are running through a city of a half million people.

Tero and friends training with the Duke today. Later today their gonna watch the Ticats game. Oskee Wee Wee.

GHO Tero Training this week....

Tuesday 6pm at Chedoke: Summer Rally Loop - will Pither's record fall?

Wednesday 5?pm'ish at MAC: 2006 NAOC Sprint re-run followed by dinner
and discussion on sprint training approaches. Earlier in the day (time unknown) the French team will be training in the Dundas Valley on our World CHampion Loop (will my record fall?)
