Bicycling (Racing Ahead AR) 5:12:00 [3] 23.8 mi (13:07 / mi)

Bike leg. Okay until it started raining and the roots got slick. Most of the trails were okay, but the last section was brutally rocky. Took a bikewack shortcut and that was easier than trying to ride the bike over the nasty rocks.

Kayaking (Racing Ahead AR) 2:28:00 [3] 7.0 mi (21:09 / mi)

Canoeing section. Good paddle around Pawtuckaway Pond, which is actually quite large. Ended up with a tough paddle/portage thru a swamp to two controls. Could just barely float the canoe; had to fight thru the vegetation. Got to the second cutoff point and found they had moved it a half hour earlier than scheduled. Kind of left us screwed; meant we had to quit the paddle and head in early for treking.

O - competition race (Racing Ahead AR) 3:26:00 [3] 10.0 mi (20:36 / mi)

Treking section. Good orienteering on the Pawtuckaway map. Included a long (2 km) off-trail leg that was actually fairly easy due to a marsh handrail. Went well until we got on top on Mt Pawtuckaway and spent 45 min looking for control codes that had been written on tree stumps, but apparently were washed off by the steady rain.

Note

Ended up a fun, but frustrating race. Missed a flooded over short-cut on the bike leg that might have meant beating the floating cut-off. Wasted a lot of time running in circles on top of Mt Pawtuckaway going hypothermic, when we should have bagged it and gone on to the rogaine section. And of course, my biking skill limited our speed on that segment, and used up a lot of energy I would have liked to have had later on. A bit of training might help.

Fun part was teaming up with Greg and Alex Jospe. Great company and endless chatter thru the entire race. Always pushing and moving ahead. Great and committed competitors.

Note

[Revised times from official results. Looks like we finished 4th overall.]

Cross Training 1:00:00 [3]

Trail work with Greg. Got bulldozer tread reinstalled. Helps when you can lift 12,000 lb dozer with its own hydraulics. Finished new 200m section of secondary trail
