Bike on road (Bike to work) 22:30 [2] 9.7 km (25.9 kph)

Amazingly there was no wind at all today, perfect cycling conditions. Got in a bit quicker as a consequence. 15.9 mph average.

Bike on road (Bike home from work) 38:00 [3] 14.2 km (22.4 kph)

Bit of wind by evening. 13.9mph average.

Run (Monday night run) 1:09:30 [4] 15.3 km (4:33 / km)
ahr:142 max:170 shoes: Road shoes New Balance 756

No usual Team Monday today, everyone seems to be elsewhere. Ran with Gareth on what was supposed to be a steady sub-one hour run as we set off quite late, having had to wait for boiler man to come give me a heafty quote. Ended up quite fast and hard work.

Across Downs to G's house, over Suspender Bridge, anticlockwise around Ashon Court golf course, quarry, main track back through woods behind the deer park, then back to the Downs, 1 clockwise lap, then I went home and G carried on back to his.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] 4.5 km (13:20 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

Technique training with Laura in the Forest of Dean on the Parkend Walk map. Laura decided it was about time that I was taught how to orienteer. Apparently it's my compass-work that lets me down so we went out to practice running on a bearing with Laura following me to see what I do wrong.

Trouble is that I had to slow down to let Laura keep up, and of course going slower, I didn't make the mistakes I do when racing. Still, we figured out that what I tend to do at each control is use the bearing between the red line in and the red line out. Fine, if I actually run into the control along the red line. When I approach a control from any direction other than the red line, I go hurtling off on the wrong bearing.

Lesson: forget trying to have impeccable control flow and instead pause to orientate the map properly and make sure I'm running out on the right bearing.

Run long 1:34:00 [2] 16.8 km (5:36 / km)
ahr:132 max:158 shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

With Laura, and with full backpack. My little bit of Saunders training and the start of Laura's half marathon training.

Across Downs, over suspender bridge, into Liegh Woods, found a new track anticlockwise around the top of the cliffs, top of Garlic Valley, Abbots Leigh, Abbots Pool, into Ashton Court, around golf course, sus bridge, Downs, home.

Legs still painful on the downhills, but otherwise a lovely run. Need to get hold of the Leigh Woods O map and go exploring in there - there's a lot more to explore than the track we usually run along through it.

Bike on road (Bike to work) 25:00 [2] 9.7 km (23.3 kph)

Nice to be back on the bike after a week away.

God my legs are sore after the two trail challenges this week.

Bike on road (Bike home from work) 40:00 [3] 14.2 km (21.3 kph)

Pouring with rain

Run 31:00 [1] 5.0 km (6:12 / km)
shoes: Road shoes New Balance 756

Just a slow trudge around the Downs on my own in the rain to try to loosen my legs. Calves and quads all sore still.

Orienteering race (SO Trail Challenge) 40:28 [5] * 8.1 km (5:00 / km) +280m 4:16 / km
ahr:168 max:187 spiked:12/12c shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

Devil's Dyke. Another easy nav trail challenge with mass start, but this time with ridiculous climb involved.

From the start straight down the bottom of Devil's Dyke, dropping 100m in the first 800m. Again I was leading straight away, about 200m ahead at #1. Soon after #3, half way back up the hill we just ran down, Nick Barrable was close behind me, but I lead into #4. I then took the road option towards #5; Nick stayed on the track running parallel. Once I'd negotiated the gate to get back into the terrain, Nick was about 20m ahead, which he gradually increased up to #6.

I took a better route than he did out of 6 and was level with him again on the way to 7, but again, he was running that bit faster and pulled away through the knee-high grass and thistles. At most I was about 300m behind him, with no sight of anyone close behind me. I was ready to collapse by #12 and really felt the 500m into the strong head-wind to the finish. Not sure haw much Nick beat me by, but I suspect it was about a minute.

No prizes from Southdowns Orienteers, but as yesterday, I was second and Laura was second lady. A fine end to my Sussex Six-day Festival of Orienteering. Legs hurt now.

Note

Overnight the hit-count on my log passed the 2500 mark... That's just about a year since I joined Attackpoint.

Orienteering race (SLOW Trail Challenge) 40:23 [5] * 10.0 km (4:02 / km) +50m 3:56 / km
ahr:176 max:185 spiked:8/8c shoes: Road shoes New Balance 756

Ham Riverside. Another excellent fast easy course, mostly on road but with some parks, paths and sandy tracks, and one (accidental) stream crossing. 10k course, my route took me 10.9km.

Mass start. I was leading 1-4 with Nick Barrable not far behind (I'm sure he was just playing with me at this stage) and a young lad hot on my heels. I came out of 4 wrong and got stuck at a stream with a fence behind it so I waded through and clambered over the fence, young lad following. After this delay Nick was right on me and the three of us ran to 5 together. I hesitated at a road crossing and ended up in 3rd place. I climbed into 2nd up the hill into 5 and stayed in 2nd, gradually pulling away from young lad until the final leg. Nick remained in front and gradually pulled away as he presumably resumed his normal running speed.

I planned to run across the playing fields into the finish and made my route choice accordingly. When I got to it there was uncrossable fence stopping me cutting across the fields, so I had taken the long way round to get back to the main entrance. The 20 seconds I'd made on young lad had been taken back and he got through to the field ahead of me. A full-on sprint finish saw me just pip him to the finish. Second place, 84 secs behind Nick.

At the prize giving the organiser pointed out that the first man and first woman "are an item" (Nick and SJ) and second man and second woman "are an item" (me and Laura). The first couple took two boxes of chocolates as prizes. We took 2 bottles of wine. Maybe that's why we're the second couple.

Orienteering race (SN District event) 1:10:00 [4] 9.1 km (7:42 / km) +220m 6:52 / km
ahr:153 max:180 shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

Frith Hill, Camberley.

Just awful. I've totally lost it again. Running far too fast and not orienteering properly.

I started about 5 mins after Laura and maybe 3 ahead of Matthias. I overtook Matthias 3 times before he got away completely, then I caught Laura, and re-caught her over and over again. After #15, after overtaking Laura for the 10th time I gave up and decided to play by giving her a head start, then running flat-out along tracks to try to beat her into the next control. After completely losing #18 and missing #20 and punching #2 instead I gave up and jogged back.

The first thing Matthias said to me afterwards was "You need to look at the map more, Tim".

Orienteering race (SO Sprint) 22:31 [5] 3.4 km (6:37 / km)
ahr:167 max:185 shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

Lancing Manor. Nice little area of park, woods, rough open and old chalk quarry. 1:4000 map totally threw me, despite knowing that was the scale in advance.

Having "sprint" in my mind made me run full pelt the whole way and consequently I over-ran almost every control. Not good orienteering from me at all today. Nick B overtook me while I was running the wrong way through medium green looking for #13.

Disappointed to have finished in 5th. Oh well. It's all good training.

Thursday Jun 19, 2008 #

Orienteering race (SAXONS Trail Race) 42:31 [5] 7.9 km (5:23 / km) +240m 4:40 / km
ahr:173 max:185 shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

Knole Park, Sevenoaks. A Nick Barrable planned and organised event. Actually ran 9.5 km.

Nice open parkland, very fast and easy nav. Mass start. Nick told me Ed Catmur was the man to watch out for, so I planned on using him for the navigation and to overtake him (if I could) at the end. Turned out that I was first to #1 so I was on my own for the whole thing. Ed wasn't far behind me by #4 and I last saw him a fair way behind me en route to #6. Didn't see him again until the finish.

Pushed hard the whole way, expecting Ed to be gaining on me. I finished about 4 mins up on him in first place.

Orienteering warm up/down 25:00 [3] 3.5 km (7:09 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

Collected in a couple of controls with Ed Catmur after we'd finished.

Orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [2] 2.25 km (8:53 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

Collected a few more controls with Laura after everyone had finished.

Note

Gone to stay at Laura's for a week cos there's a week of various trail challenges, a sprint-o, and a district event in the SE area.

Bike on road (Bike to work) 25:00 [2] 9.7 km (23.3 kph)

Bike on road (Bike home from work) 27:00 [2] 9.3 km (20.7 kph)

Came the short way home, and slowly. Didn't want to tire myself out too much before the 5k race this evening.

Run race (Sri Chinmoy 5k) 17:40 [5] 5.0 km (3:32 / km)
shoes: Road shoes New Balance 756

Three laps of Eastville Park, on tarmac paths. Downhill one side, uphill the other. Great day for it. No wind, sunny and dry. My first ever 5km race.

The start was quite slow, I took the lead straight away - a bit daunting not knowing where I was going. After 1.5 laps someone pulled up alongside and we stuck together until 2.5 laps when he pulled away downhill. I couldn't catch him so stayed just behind him to the end. He beat me by 8 seconds. 2nd place. Very pleased considering I didn't exactly rest in preparation for this.

Since getting a larger big chain ring for my mtb my ride home has become faster. Seem to be consistently doing 35mins now.

Run (Monday night run) 1:06:53 [3] 13.1 km (5:06 / km)

With Tom and Keith. Ashton Court but a shorter loop missing out the quarry.

Legs felt heavy today. Couldn't have gone any faster than this. Nice run though. Beautiful evening.

Run 1:15:00 [4] 18.7 km (4:01 / km)
ahr:162 shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

Run in the New Forest with Laura biking alongside me. Did my old half-marathon training route from 2002. Parked at Holmesley, railway track through Greenberry Bridge, Burley Golf Course, Clay Hill, Naked Man (I did the mile in 5.53), Longslade, Hincheslea, Setthorns, Mead End, Broadley Inclosure, Brownhills Inclosure.

Kept a good pace the whole way. Felt really good today. I love this route. A great mix of fast gravel tracks, loose sandy paths, steep climbs, wet mud, stream crossings, and open heath/grass. Stood thigh-deep in the stream at the end for 5 mins to cool down.

Measured this on maps.live.com at 18.6km. In my old training diary from 2002 I had this as 20km and I did it in 1.26.39 on 12 Sep 2002. Pretty sure I did the exact same route as I used to.

MTB offroad 2:00:00 [2] 30.0 km (15.0 kph)
ahr:90

Ride with Laura in the New Forest. Rode my single speed mtb. Good to be back on it again after 2 years.

Parked just outside Brockenhurst between the two railway bridges. Up Tilebarn Lane, Church Lane, Roydon Woods, Boldre Church, bridleway to Round Hill campsite, Woodfiddley, Beaulieu Road Station, Denny Lodge, cycle path through to Balmer Lawn, South Weirs, and back to the car.

First time I've ever worn my HRM on the bike. Very surprised to see how low it was. Didn't go above 140 even on the steep uphills, and that's on my single speed.

Friday Jun 13, 2008 #

Run 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

Run with Laura along the shingle bank out to Hurst Castle and around and back. Started at the wooden bridge.

HRM was doing all sorts of strange things all the way. Must be some sort of weird force field surrounding the spit and the castle. One minute I was dead, the next I was at 210 and the same was happening with Laura's. Odd, considering we both have digital strap-ons.

Blaise Castle. Setting up my informal evening event. Putting out 26 controls around Blaise Castle. More of an interval session cos I was running hard between each control then stopping to put the cane in the ground and tie the flag on. God knows how much climb, but a lot.

Orienteering 20:00 [4] 2.75 km (7:16 / km)

Clearing up collecting controls after the event.

Note
(rest day)

The nail came off my bad toe last night, leaving a nice red soft fleshy mush exposed. Without the nail to protect it, I'm scared to run on it cos it looks like it will burst. I think it needs to heal a bit more before I run on it again.

Bike on road (Bike home from work) 35:00 [3] 14.2 km (24.3 kph)

Since this was my only training for the day I pushed hard on the way home. Knocked 5 mins off my usual time. A hot day for it.

Run 55:00 [2] 10.0 km (5:30 / km)
ahr:123 max:164 shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

With Laura in the New Forest. A very warm sunny day. Was supposed to be a nice long 90 minute run, but Laura was being pathetic and kept stopping to walk the hills. So we cut it short.

Saturday Jun 7, 2008 #

MTB offroad 1:30:00 [2] 14.0 km (9.3 kph)

Ride in the New Forest with Laura on her new bike. I rode my single speed for the first time in over 18 months. Not a hard and fast ride; just a leisurely ride in the sun. Parked at Woods Corner in Burley. Up to Old House, out to heath, Smugglers Road, Castle Hill and back to car.

Orienteering (BOK evening informal) 1:00:00 [3] 6.5 km (9:14 / km) +180m 8:06 / km
shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

Ashton Court. Blue course 5km +180m. Was unsure how my toe would cope being back in the O shoes so made this a training exercise with Matt The Gland Franklin. Map memory. We started off takign turns memorising one leg at a time, with the other person holding the map and planning the next leg. Was a bit too easy seeing as we knew the area pretty well, and especially when John tore past us and showed us the way to the next two controls. So we did two legs at a time. Good little exercise, but not altogether challenging.

Then ran round the 2.5km +80m-ish yellow course with John collecting controls.

Bike on road 30:00 [3] 12.0 km (24.0 kph)

Biked to and from Ashton Court for the BOK evening informal.

Bike on road (Bike to work) 25:00 [2] 9.7 km (23.3 kph)

Back tyre had gone down over night. Took a gamble and pumped it up to 70psi in the hope that it would hold long enough for me to get back home at lunchtime (site visit planned on the bike).

Bike on road (Bike home from work) 35:00 [3] 11.0 km (18.9 kph)

The gamble just about paid off. By 12.00 the tyre was half deflated, but it was enough for me to rag it straight to the bike shop for spare tubes and back home to change it.

Bike on road 35:00 [2] 10.0 km (17.1 kph)

From home into the city centre for a site visit for work. Then back home again after. Spent the afternoon walking/cycling around town for 3 hours. I'm half tempted to log it since I was in training attire I wasn't sightseeing, and I broke a sewat a couple of times.

Run 40:06 [3] 9.25 km (4:20 / km)
shoes: Road shoes New Balance 756

On my own down to Blaise Castle and back to check the remaining controls sites from yesterday.

First run since my toe exploded. Felt ok. Bit sore to start with, but soon stopped hurting. It did hurt on the downhills though pushing against the front of the shoe.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: Road shoes New Balance 756

The eastern half of the Blaise Castle map, checking control sites for my event next week. Again, the map is complete pap. Most of the sites I'd picked do not exist, and the map just doesn't match the ground in many places.

MTB offroad 1:00:00 [2]

Ride off-road around Blaise Castle checking control sites for my little informal next week. Lots of stop-start trying to find rogue features on this crap map. Was out for more like 90 mins but some of that was standing around so I'm not logging it all. Good fun riding off-road again.

Orienteering race (BADO Regional) 1:17:21 [5] *** 12.2 km (6:20 / km) +140m 6:00 / km
ahr:155 max:187 spiked:27/29c shoes: Inov8 Terroc 330

Butter Wood, Hook.

Good race. Was running fast, and my navigation managed to keep up. The forest was very much like a New Forest map - few contours, big patches of white, a spattering of pits and depressions with one or two earthwalls to run along. Just how I like it. Was very pleased to have finished less than 2 minutes behind Nick Barrable and Joe Mercer, then in came Tuomas 2.5mins ahead of them. Still, 4th, very happy with that.

2 rest days sorted my soleus pain out, but then...Running at full pelt towards the last control I smashed my big toe into a solid tree stump. I tumbled and rolled over then carried on running. Back at the car with my toe effing throbbing I removed my nice deep crimson sock to find big toe nail sticking up vertically. Then was alomst sick as I bent it back to where it should be. That's gonna put me out of doing the Blaise Blazer hill race tomorrow. Big balls.
