Run - Road warm up/down 15:30 [3] 3.0 km (5:10 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Road-X 233

Jogging along some of the Bridge Inn route with Paul and Chris Palmer.

Run - Road race (Bridge Inn 5km) 17:24 [5] 5.0 km (3:29 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Road-X 233

Been meaning to come back to this race for ages, so tonight's mob match was a good reason to do so.

Set off quite fast with Chris P right behind me. He stayed there until just after the turn at which point he stepped in front. I tucked in behind him hoping to use his slipstream and overtake at the end, but I had nothing in me and had to let him go in the last few hundred metres.

Finished 11th I think, 20 sec down from when I last did this in Jan 11.

This was only 25 sec faster than my AC parkrun pb, and the same min/km as my 10k pace so I guess I'm not on top form right now.

Run - Road warm up/down 7:30 [3] 1.5 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Road-X 233

Jogging along the cycle path to warm down.

Run - Off road 35:00 [3] 7.24 km (4:50 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

A nice Sunday morning run with Laura, Justyn and Toby dog.

Parked in Yew Tree Bottom car park and ran down to the old railway. Ran with them for a bit then went off on my own cos they didn't want to run as long/far as me. Trotted over to Horseshoe Bottom, up the other side and along the ridge to Wilverley. Around Wilverley Plain and did a bit of a loop in Wilverley Inclosure.

I'd spotted on the New Forest Runners' website that today is the Sway 5 Miler, starting and finishing at Wilverley, but I'd missed the entry deadline.

Start was at 10.30 and it rather conveniently happened that I was in the environs of the start line at that exact time. After a brief pause to double-knot my laces 200m in front of the start, I heard the gun fire and a load of runners came thundering towards me. The temptation was too great...

Run - Off road race (Sway 5 Miler) 29:00 [5] 8.0 km (3:38 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

Haha, love it!

An off-road hilly (for the New Forest) 5 mile race around the tracks and paths of Wilverley Inclosure and Wilverley Plain.

There were 3 clear front runners after just 200m so I joined in behind them to the surprise of everyone behind. These three were a league above everyone else and rapidly pulled away. I was all on my own with a big gap in front and behind.

After a couple of miles one of the three began to drop back and I set about reeling him in right up to the end.

The marshals weren't sure what to make of me. I had no number bib on, so some kindly pointed this out, while others just clapped and pointed me in the right direction. I couldn't resist asking a group of marshals "is this a race or something? How much further is it?" How they chuckled.

By the end I was only 10 sec behind #3 and all the spectators were cheering us in to the finish. He crossed the line and all eyes turned to me as I swung wide to bypass the finish funnel and sailed through the crowds and just kept going. I heard lots of helpful shouting (this way! Here's the finish! No, over here!) and laughing but I didn't stop to explain. Just slowed to a warm down jog back to the car.

Sadly I suspect none of the runners even knew I'd done it. The guys who I joined the race in front of wouldn't have seen me after the first few bends, and those in front didn't look back once, even the guy in 3rd only glanced back on the final straight so probably thought I was trying my luck against him for a short stretch into the finish.

Orienteering race (SO Trail Challenge) 41:06 [5] 10.0 km (4:07 / km) +260m 3:38 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

Devil's Dyke, on the South Downs.

An orange-standard runners' race with minimal route choice, plus we were given maps when we registered. Just my kind of thing.

Quickly took the lead with Jonny Crickmore but at the first route choice he went left and I went right. I'd already calculated my route was going to be the quicker one cos it was all downhill so I was dismayed to reach #1 right in the middle of the pack with Jonny nowhere to be seen. Had to play catchup and overtook a load of people through 2, 3 and 4.

Got really confused between 4 & 5 and ended up losing a load of places again as I tried to work out where I was. Ended up behind Neil Crickmore, but worked my way to the front soon after #5. Could see Jonny up ahead climbing the big hill out of #6 and was gradually gaining on him on the long legs over the top. 8-9 he took the slower route so I gained more on him, but not enough to catch him up.

Finished 2nd by 26 secs, Crickmored for the second time in a week. Still, with Buff sponsoring the race I came away with a goody bag of Buff stuff, including a Buff.

Post-race chatting revealed that Jonny had run the route to #1 several times before and knew that my route was slower cos it was a very steep downhill with 2 styles to cross.

Orienteering race (SO Park-O) 17:19 [4] 3.2 km (5:25 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

Staying with the in-laws for a week. Sprint race at Lancing Manor, Lancing.

A fun little race, starting in a park and heading up on to the South Downs for a few pinball controls in an old quarry, and ending through some woods. Nothing too technical, but I made a few misses towards the end in the 'easier' bits, thanks in part to a mis-placed #19.

Finished 2nd to Neil Crickmore.

Run - Off road warm up/down 10:00 [2] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

A short warmup pre sprint, then went back out on the map for jog around to get more than 17 mins running for our 90 minute drive.

Run - Off road warm up/down 20:00 [2] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

Warming up, a few drills and strides before the Towpath 10k.

Run - Off road race (GWR Towpath 10k) 36:23 [5] 10.0 km (3:38 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

3rd place again behind speedy Bath AC guy and Pete Woodward, but woefully more than a minute slower than last time.

The last 3 days of digging, shovelling, sledgehammering and wheelbarrowing have taken their toll on my body. I felt broken before I even started warming up.
8 PM

Run - Off road warm up/down 5 [2] 1.0 km (5 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

A weary trudge around the park to warm down.

Run - Road ('barefoot' running 1) 26:45 [3] 5.95 km (4:30 / km)
shoes: inov-8 Road-X lite 155

A brief trot as soon as Laura got home. Around Horfield Common, to the Downs, and back past Red Maids'.

Took it easy to start with cos my left glut has been giving me gip since the parkrun, but picked up the pace towards the end.

Ran at race pace for a few mins between White Trees Roundabout and St Ursula's, and again racing a fat girl on a bike along Eastfield Rd and Terrace.

Bike on road 1:30:00 [2] 22.0 km (14.7 kph)
shoes: Univega home-built MTB

Bike ride with Laura and Maya.

With Maya on the back, around the Downs, suspender bridge, across AC through Bikefest out to the quarry, Abbots Pool. Put Maya on Laura's bike, and carried on out to Leigh Woods and back around the Downs again.

Run - Off road 32:00 [3] 5.85 km (5:28 / km)

Steady jog over to AC for the parkrun.

Run - Road race (parkrun) 18:46 [5] 5.0 km (3:45 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

Due to a MTB event going on at the top end of the course we had to run a different course. I wasn't listening to the pre-race brief so I didn't know what this entailed - assuming it can't be any more hilly than the normal course I went out faster than normal. Too fast.

Normal route to half way up the tarmac bit of the hill, turned round, back down to the bottom, turned right towards the orienteering car park, turned around, back up the first turning point again, then back down to finish.

Got the pacing wrong and seriously began to flag on the second time climbing the main path. Didn't feel on top form anyway and was quite a long way from my pb. Finished 3rd just ahead of Chris Palmer and Duncan.

Run - Off road 21:30 [3] 4.5 km (4:47 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

And a slow trot back to the Downs, deviating from my straight line route to avoid the Race For Life.

Run - Off road 35:48 [3] 7.6 km (4:43 / km) +90m 4:27 / km
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

A soggy run to Blaise to do hill reps, then a longer trot back doing a lap around the castle hill, down to the mill, up the drive to Crane Gate and back through WoT.

There were notices all around Blaise saying something like "Today a horror movie is being filmed at Stratford Mill. The path is open to the public but be aware that actors is realistic costumes will be visible. Please do not be alarmed and reassure your children that it is safe. Please be quiet as you pass but feel free to ask the stewards any questions."

Run - Off road hills 19:59 [4] 3.6 km (5:33 / km) +260m 4:05 / km
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

Reps up and down a wet and muddy Kingsweston Hill. Up the main path and down the horse track. No stops.

Garmin tells me it was 45m climb but Oli's Blaise map shows it as 65m. I'm with Oli on this one.

Note

We opted to miss the third day of the Tamar Triple so spent a hot sunny day walking around the coastline of Salcombe with Maya in the rucksack. A nice change from the wet and wind of the last two days.

Orienteering race (Tamar Triple Day 2) 36:06 [4] 5.9 km (6:07 / km) +215m 5:11 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 340

Smallhanger Waste. South West Middle Distance Champs.

Possibly one of my best 'technical' runs ever. After losing about a minute in the woods looking for #3, made no real mistakes. The open moorland section was fast and easy, then taking Laura's advice I slowed it right down for the 'super-scale' technical area (insert at 1:2500 with 1.25m contours of an old mining area) and it seemed to do wonders for my navigation.

Felt like I was taking it far too slow though and thought I wasn't going to be at all competitive, but turns out that I won, beating Ben Chesters by almost a minute. After he'd told me at the sprint event that this race is going to be 'proper' orienteering as opposed to sprint not-real-orienteering I feel inclined to agree.

Orienteering race (Tamar Triple Sprint Race) 22:00 [4] 2.8 km (7:51 / km) +100m 6:40 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

Exeter University. Open course, SW Sprint Champs.

Cock it.

The usual case of running too fast to read the map properly. Made a few mistakes early on, so was running fast to try to make up time, especially as I couldn't seem to shake Tim Longley off.

The straight line from #17-#18 passed directly through #25. I punched #25 instead and then carried on #19 through #24 before I realised I'd already been to #25. Really couldn't be bothered to go back around and rectify it so jacked it in and walked straight to the finish.

I could try to blame it on the stressful 3 hour journey with Maya screaming in the back for the last hour and arriving late for my start and being rushed through the start line to fit me into a vacant slot. But I'd probably have done no better had I been more prepared.
3 PM

Orienteering race (Tamar Triple Sprint Race) 17:21 [4] 2.8 km (6:12 / km) +80m 5:25 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

Final, but non-comp.

A much better race for me. Less technical and more fast running legs. Only 1 mistake en route to #24, losing prob 10-20 secs.

Finished 2nd, 2 sec behind Ben Chesters.
