Orienteering race (Exmoor Long O) 1:50:00 [4] 12.6 km (8:44 / km)
(sick) shoes: inov-8 Trailroc 235

Having convinced myself that I felt better this morning I decided to go with Mark and Keith to give it a go.

Fail.

Managed to go alright for the first few controls but soon began to feel like I really shouldn't be attempting a 3hour+ run, especially on the hills. En route to #9 I took a wrong turn and had to deal with a massive steep climb up through a lot of undergrowth which finished me off.

Took a steady trot back wishing I'd stayed at home with the family.

(sick)

Gutted and pissed off that I've come down with another cold. Was supposed to be doing my first fell race in the Black Mts today as OMM training followed by the Exmoor LongO tomorrow.

I've not been 100% for well over a month now. I don't seem to be able to do any decent training these days without getting ill. Trying to manage two young kids, a job, and OMM training isn't a very practical combination.

Run - Road race (Weston Prom Race) 31:55 [4] 5.0 mi (6:23 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Road X-treme 138

Race 1 of the new season. Tried desperately not to race this and to just go with the flow but ended up making it a bit of a fartlek session to the annoyance of those around me.

Run - Road warm up/down 10:00 [2] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Road X-treme 138

Warming up and warming down.

Nice cool fog. Legs struggling this morning.

Run - Off road long (RFW) 1:55:50 [3] 23.5 km (4:56 / km) +340m 4:36 / km
shoes: Salomon S-Lab Sense

Another run home from work, slightly different route from last time to avoid the worst of the undergrowth.

Legs felt fine all day until I started running and hit the first hill. Yesterday's race was definitely making itself known in my hip flexors.

Nice run though, all the better for taking water with me.

Orienteering race (London City Race) 58:50 [5] 13.6 km (4:20 / km)
shoes: inov-8 Road-X lite 150

Canary Wharf and Isle of Dogs.

IMHO the best London race so far, but that's probably because it didn't have the complexity of the Barbican and was largely a runners' course with lots of long easy legs.

Felt quite strong running and didn't do much wrong. Only biggie was to 15 where I took the wrong way round thinking I could go through a canopy. When I found I couldn't I then didn't take the next best route, instead running a long way round 3 sides when I didn't need to.

Happy with my race, good fun. And Laura won 3rd prize on the Women's Open.

Run - Off road 1:22:13 [3] 17.2 km (4:47 / km) +425m 4:15 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Trailroc 150

Had some flexi time in the bank so took myself for a nice long run in the warm sunshine.

Court Hill, over to Cadbury Camp, down the south side and back up, down to Tickenham, up Old Lane, over Naish Farm, down under the M5 to Clapton in Gordon, back up over the M5 and back to work.

Felt good.

Run - Off road 37:35 [3] 7.7 km (4:53 / km) +160m 4:25 / km
shoes: Merrell Trail Glove

Finally after 4 months in the job, a lunch run with someone from my team. In the pouring rain. Their usual loop. Quite good fun in a soaking wet but slightly warm kind of way.

Orienteering 53:00 [3] 9.0 km (5:53 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 340

For a start, chasing starts don't work with childcare, Laura was in more contention than I was anyway, and with my frailty I thought it wise to not race today.

Once Laura was back I went for a jolly around my course but only some of it. Didn't feel too bad but would defo have struggled to run at any pace.

Orienteering race (Caddihoe Chase 1) 1:34:52 [4] 12.7 km (7:28 / km) +520m 6:12 / km
shoes: Icebug Acceleritas3

Virtuous Lady, Dartmoor. 10.6km. Interesting new lidar map with some trial new map symbols.

Nice day, and generally a decent area apart from the numerous areas of dense bracken and brambles which weren't apparent until you were balls deep in it.

Still not convinced that I'm totally over my illness but really wanted to run this. Fine for half an hour but quickly began to suffer on the terrain and climbs. Felt significantly off the pace but on the plus side made very few mistakes. Totally exhausted by the end. Unsure whether I'll run tomorrow.

12 mins off Ben Chesters.

Run - Off road 33:30 [3] 6.9 km (4:51 / km) +141m 4:24 / km
shoes: Merrell Trail Glove

Desperate to get out for a run but scared of delaying recovery. Took a gentle tester out on the hills at lunchtime. Figure of 8 around Court Hill and Strawberry Hill.

Felt nice to be out running again, and felt pretty good. Cleared a good few cobwebs but hopefully didn't do too much.

(sick)

Infection still lurking in the depths so I'm now on a second course of antibiotics.

Note
(sick)

After having tonsillitis a month ago I had a week of good health before developing a deep chesty phlegmy cough. It's been lingering for 3 weeks now but has not really affected me other than being very annoying having coughing fits at work and coughing up green stuff in the mornings and when I run.

On Sunday, the day after our long run, my sinuses were blocked and felt like they would burst. At work on Monday arvo I came over all feverish and lethargic. Bed at 19:30 but couldn't sleep through my heart pounding at a rate of knots.

Doctors this morning. Chest infection. Amoxicillin for 7 days.
