Run - Off road 1:01:00 [3] 13.4 km (4:33 / km)
shoes: inov-8 Trailroc 235

Run from Mum's along the cliff top to the White House, Milford, then up the Danestream into Shorefield, Royal Oak, golf course, and back along the cliffs again. Very wet, muddy and slippery.

Orienteering race (WIM Boxing Day Canter) 56:00 [4] 10.0 km (5:36 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 340

Moors Valley CP, 1hr score.

Arrived from Sussex with literally seconds to go. Got to the start pen just as the start gun went. Didn't get a chance to look at the map and do any sort of macro route planning before I got swept up with the mass start so just ran with Gavin to the first control.

Spotted Santa and diverted to punch him where I picked up Dave Currie and ran with him for a while. Got quite lost looking for the trig point in dark green forest after which I didn't see Dave again. Finally with some time to breathe and look at the whole map, I decided to abort the competition and to just track-run to the furthest control in the very top corner of the map after which I just had to track-run straight back to finish with possibly the lowest score I've ever got at this event.

Orienteering 1:20:00 [2] 6.0 km (13:20 / km)
shoes: inov-8 Trailroc 235

Having missed my long run yesterday I was promised a decent 90 min run on the South Downs today, incorporating pre-running/control checking my in-laws' forthcoming Blue course in Rewell Forest. Turns out that I spent more time wandering around looking for the masking tape tags than actually running between them.

Note

Had entered the BAOC Military Challenge 30k race today but in-laws decided not to go with the mobile home, and Laura & Maya didn't fancy waiting in the cold rain for me for 3 hours or so.

7 PM

Run - Road 48:40 [3] 11.1 km (4:23 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Road-X 255

Was hoping to do more like 90 mins this evening but I'm still not 100% and once I'd been going for 20 mins or so decided to cut it short and did the usual Poole Park Whitcliff Park loop. Pace seems to be ok though; felt slower than that.

7 PM

Bike on road 1:00:00 [3] 24.0 km (24.0 kph)
shoes: Mongoose Maurice Singlespeed

Ride from Poole to Bomo to enjoy the German Xmas bar in the Square. And back again.

8 AM

Run - Road 29:30 [3] 6.4 km (4:37 / km)
shoes: New Balance Minimus MT10RD

Jog up to Little Stoke Park for my inaugural run at the new parkrun.

Not really feeling it today. Been fighting off a cold/sore throat most of the week, but I've been wanting to do this new parkun since it started 7 weeks ago and this is the first time I've been able to go.
9 AM

Run - Road race (parkrun) 17:53 [5] 5.0 km (3:35 / km)
shoes: New Balance Minimus MT10RD

Little Stoke Parkrun. A dead-flat course. 3.5 laps of the park on the tarmac path. A rather uninspiring course compared to AC but it's flat and should be a good marker race.

Was hoping to be a lot closer to 17:00 than this, but after the first lap I struggled to keep to my 3:30 target pace, and by the third I was struggling to stay below 3:50/k.

Finished 5th I think.

Run - Road 29:10 [3] 5.9 km (4:57 / km)
shoes: New Balance Minimus MT10RD

And the jog back again

6 PM

Run - Road 50:40 [3] 11.1 km (4:34 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Road-X 255

I've been too busy with work in the evenings recently to manage to do any running. Finally I have an evening free.

Similar to last week's run. Around Poole Quay, Poole Park and Whitecliff Park. Proper cold wind blowing off the water, but not as cold it has been cycling first thing in the mornings lately.

1 PM

Orienteering race (NGOC Sat league) 56:18 [4] 7.47 km (7:32 / km) +400m 5:57 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 340

Knockalls, Blue, 5.7km 250m.

Had a very late start which gave me enough time to overhear numerous people saying that #1 is in the wrong place, as is #11. Possibly not a good thing to have in mind when you start.

Navigated carefully to #1 but as soon as it wasn't where I expected it to be I kind of gave up and just wandered around looking for where it might be. After a few minutes I was shouted into it by Phil, Tim and Adam who had walked out to check its location.

All was fine after that. Felt like I was running well and wasn't having any major map issues. Until #11. Once again, as soon as it wasn't where I expected it, I mentally gave up and wandered around until someone else led me into it.

Then all good again until the leg to the finish where I drifted too far down the slope and got completely stuck in head-high brambles under the line of pylons.

Finished happy though, for the first time in ages, but was disappointed to have lost so much time. Nice map and nice sunny day for it.

P.S. Having GPSed on to Routegadget it seems I wasn't in the right place for #1 anyway, but also where I punched wasn't in the circle.

12 PM

Orienteering race 53:14 [4] 9.76 km (5:27 / km) +40m 5:21 / km
shoes: New Balance Minimus MT10RD

NWO local. Defence Academy, Shrivenham. Blue, 7.6km.

I realy enjoyed this area when I last ran here at an Army Wednesday event 2 years ago. The forest blocks have got much more grotty since then though.

Quite a fun course, but an uninspiring start circumnavigating the golf course before needing to look at the map properly.

Lost a lot of time wading through brambles and nettles trying to find #15, then got thrown by an unmapaped square of fencing near to #17 causing me to backtrack unnecessarily. Otherwise a fairly fast easy run around buildings and water features.

Run - Off road warm up/down 14:00 [3] 2.5 km (5:36 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Baregrip 200

Jogging around Blaise warming up before the cross country race.
2 PM

Run - Off road race (Gwent Cross Country) 41:53 [5] 10.7 km (3:55 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Baregrip 200

Blaise Estate.

My second venture into the world of cross country, this time in a more local league.

Loved it. Definitely the right choice of footwear. Ground was soft and sticky but not overly slippery. Got into a group after the first half lap and spent the race playing cat and mouse - me overtaking on the climbs/downhills/technical bits, them overtaking me on the long flat slogs.

Had a bit of strength for a sprint finish gaining a couple of places, but just didn't quite make the top 50.

51st. First GWR finisher.

Run - Off road warm up/down 12:00 [2] 2.3 km (5:13 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Baregrip 200

And warming down afterwards.
