Happy BSTer. What a lovely morning for an Elite Classic race. Cold, crisp, dry, sunny, no wind.

Went out to retrace my steps from the other day. It's quicker without a map.

A little bit jealous that the JK is going on just 20 miles from us while we're at the in-laws' for Easter, I went out for a compensatory run. Turned out to be quite a good substitute for an orienteering race. I took the OS map to explore some forest tracks out the back of Ifold, and true to my orienteering form, I got totally lost and spent a good amount of time standing still trying to work out where the hell I was.

Nice route though. Through Hog Wood and a handful of farms, and on to the olf canal path back down to Ifold. A nice warm (in that it was sunny and cold rather than dull and cold) morning.

Back to Bristol in time to wen to the Downs session. Lots of running this week; hill reps on the gravel track down to the zoo, lots of squats, squat thrusts, bunny hops and general leg efforts, plus the obligatory countless pushups.

Note

I recently downloaded a heart rate monitor app for my iPhone. Can anyone explain with any authority how it is that my waking HR is in the mid 40s, relaxing on the sofa late evening it's low 40s, yet when sitting on the loo, seemingly at any time of day it's down to 35?!

Run - Road warm up/down 12:30 [3] 2.3 km (5:26 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

Parked at Church Road and jogged with Maya in the buggy on the tarseal drive down to the parkrun start. It bodes well when during a brief stop for a pee in the bushes Maya starts chirping from the buggy, 'More running, more running'.
9 AM

Run - Road race (parkrun) 21:33 [4] 5.0 km (4:19 / km) +95m 3:56 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

My first attempt at this with Maya in the buggy.

Was aiming to start somewhere in the middle but got pushed to the back by everyone not wanting to be stuck behind a buggy. Somewhat angered and fuelled up I dived off road on to the grass and powered past all the slow joggers and rejoined the tarseal much closer to the front.

To my delight I was overtaking peole the whole way, much to their bemusement. Happy to finish 24th, about 3 mins slower than without the buggy. Loved it.

Ashton Court Parkrun #96 - 23-March-2013 - 46

Run - Road 10:00 [3] 1.8 km (5:33 / km) +60m 4:46 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

And a weary haul back up to the top of the hill to let Maya have a run around of her own in the grass.

It was with a certain smugness that while running back up the hill I passed many of the joggers still heading back down to the finish, many who had pushed in front of me and the buggy before we started.

In Bristol working from home today so it would have been rude not to make the most of the daylight hours.

Went for what turned out to be something of an exploratory run with Keith. Did a wiggly loop around Blaise on some paths, tracks and indistinct rat runs that we'd not seen/run before. Found some exciting new control features too.

Quite wet and muddy, but nice to be out and good to remind myself what it's like to run and chat, even if it was with Keith.

Poole Park. Was supposed to be running club this week, but the running guy was off sick so it was a normal session instead.

First half was all leg work, second half was all core and arms/shoulders. Pecs are quivering as I write this at 11pm.

Bike on road 20:00 [3] 8.0 km (24.0 kph)

Ride down the Bourne Valley to meet Justyn in Bomo for a few drinks, then on to Boscombe to Urban Reef. Gonna have to start meeting him somewhere further away cos my new place is a lot closer to Bomo than Gavin's.
10 PM

Bike on road 22:00 [3] 8.0 km (21.8 kph)

And the ride back. Didn't notice the gentle slope all the way down to Bomo, until the return trip back up all the way.

Orienteering race (NGOC Gallopen) 1:15:05 [4] 9.4 km (7:59 / km) +335m 6:47 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 340

Symonds Yat & High Meadow Woods, Brown, 7.1km, 400m. Actual moving time 6mins less than total time.

Nice area, but very hilly. Legs really felt the lack of terrain training, especially on the hills.

Was hoping my navigation might be a bit more on target cos I was moving slower but I still made all the usual mistakes. Can't be bothered to list them, but the GPS reveals all:

Run - Road 45:30 [3] 9.8 km (4:39 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Road-X 233

The sun came out briefly in between rain this morning so I seized the moment and took Maya out for a buggy run around the Downs.

Seems everyone else in Bristol had the same idea, even one other dad and his running buggy (clearly a much slower model I might add).

Note

It's no good, I can't hold it in any longer.

Tomorrow I hand in my notice at work in Poole. In a month's time I will be back in Bristol for a new job in Clevedon, commuting daily, living at home, no more 0530 Monday morning starts, no more 3 hour 80 mile journeys home on Thursday evening. Daddy's coming home.

Guess I'll have to reapply for Team Monday membership and suffer the inauguration run.

Another cold night for it but there was a good turnout, and before long the temperature was the last thing on my mind.

Run - Road 11:25 [3] 2.5 km (4:34 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Road-X 233

Parked in Alington Road and jogged to the beach at Shore Road.

Then back to the car again after the beach run.

Jeez it's cold and windy.

Run - Terrain (Barefoot running) 45:30 [3] 9.0 km (5:03 / km)
shoes: Bare feet

Me, the Thirteenth Duke of Winburn, barefooted on the sand, in a 25mph sandstorm, in the snow? Rather.

Millions wouldn't, but I thought it would be fun to run on the snowy sand in today's surprise winter revival. It was, in a masochistic kind of way, but I hadn't counted on the sandstorm blowing straight at me exfoliating my bare lower legs all the way to Bournemouth Pier which made running the whole distance a real test of willpower.

A lot calmer on the return run, but there was no firm sand available today so the going was quite tough even with the wind behind me.

23:20 there
22:10 back.

Run - Off road 1:14:00 [3] 15.4 km (4:48 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Terrafly 303

First day back in Poole after 2 weeks paternity leave. Sunny and warm again, and still light when I got out of the office.

Took some tips from Bendover's log and did a new run.

Bourne Valley downstream to Talbot Heath, Coy Pond, Bourne Valley gardens right down to Bournemouth Pier, west on the prom, up Branksome Chine gardens and then on to the road for the last bit from Penn Hill Ave, St Osmund's Rd, Richmond Rd, Churchfield Road back to Rossmore.

Legs achy from yesterday's run but I couldn't miss the opportunity for nice light run. Just about made it to Penn Hill Ave before it got too dark for offroading.

Last day of paternity leave, sun out and temperature in double figures, Maya at nursery, Laura and Raffy out to the shops - RUN!

Steady trot around Blaise, Shirehampton Golf Course, and the Trym valley.

Could really feel the lack of running in recent weeks, but it was nice to be out in glorious sunshine in just shorts and t-shirt.

Pretty much over the cold now. Not a nice one, and it's now been through the Sussex contingent of the family too.

Since Raffy joined us there is just about no available time during waking hours to do any sort of training, other than a short period over lunch while Maya sleeps, or before anyone else gets up.

So I attended the 06:00 BMF session on the Downs just so I can do something exercise-like while I'm on paternity leave.
