Orienteering race 1:03:37 [5] ***** 7.0 km (9:05 / km) +260m 7:40 / km

WOC - Relay 2nd leg.

Sam ran the 1st leg and did just about how I expected, she can really run well on the 1st leg. My pulse did increased when I saw her run up the finish shoot in 11th place, but I felt fine once I got the map. Made a few bobbles in the beginning and France got ahead of me (she also had a shorter forking at number 3). China had caught up and I was with GB. I was with them for the first 5 controls, but they started to pull away after that. I ran on my own for the rest of the way, unfortunately I made a larger mistake to number 9 (about 2 minutes) This was a few minutes after I had taken a GU and drank water, suddenly the world was spinning (it was very hot out today) and I couldn't figure out if the control was up or down the hill from me. I was totally disoriented for a while and could hardly keep running. I snapped out of it as quickly as this strange dizzy spell appeared and did fine after that again, actually feeling even better physically than in the beginning. Right before the spectator control I saw GB again. That was encouraging. The last loop after the spectator control went well. I was with GB and made no navigational errors anymore. I was pretty beat though running up the finish shoot. Took forever.

It was a good race for me, and I had the 16th fastest time on the 2nd leg, 3 seconds slower than 15th. If you think of it as a qualification race than that is pretty good. I was however a little bummed that 5 teams got passed me out there. We were about 4.5 minutes out of 10th place at that point (all of which I lost during my run, since Sam came in 11th). I can probably find about 3 minutes of mistakes on my course, if not a little more, so it wasn't a technically superb race for me. But certainly pretty normal actually.

After the race my stomach started cramping. It actually never stopped and I was curled up in a ball for 5 hours afterwards. Eventually, we even had to get the Swiss doctor to look at me and he gave me something for the cramping. I didn't eat at all after the race until this morning. Got some fluids down though. Very painful evening.

Note

btw, I threw up this morning before the race because we had to take a bus to the pre-start and I got car sick, so my day didn't start that well... :-(

Orienteering warm up/down 25:00 [2] 2.5 km (10:00 / km) +80m 8:37 / km

Oh man, after getting car sick on the way to the pre-start and seeing my breakfast, warming up was rough. Thankfully, I started to feel better and I forced myself to read the warm-up map and get ready for the race.

WOC - Middle distance Final

A lot of today was good, one moment was very bad and I ended up 180° wrong up a trail. Ran about 600m in the wrong direction. There were some alarm bells going off, but I am still shocked that I managed to do that big of a mistake. I lost 9 minutes there. Ran really well afterwards though (was pissed) and actually had a lot of fun too, ironically. Disappointed in my lapse of concentration and feel pretty stupid now, but am also happy with how I orienteered in the hard sections.

Middle distance courses can be a lot of fun though.

After some analyzing of my splits and the race I can safely say that Top 40 could have been possible and with a little work (plus a better training year) top 30 will also be within reach.

Here are my splits compared to the 30th split:
(control: my split, 30th split)
1: 2.50, 2.24 (slow start)
2: 2.26, 1.42 (missed it a little)
3: 3.29, 1.53 (mistake, too low, mixed up the yellow patches)
4: 1.56, 1.40
5: 1.28, 1.25
6: 1.29, 1.23
7: 3.23, 3.10
8: 1.42, 1.30
9: 14.21, 5.15 (ouch!)
10: 2.02, 1.54
11: 2.13, 2.20 (:-))
12: 2.54, 2.50
13: 3.31, 3.18
14: 3.57, 2.23 (mistake)
15: 0.35, 0.34
16: 1.20, 1.14
17: 2.58, 2.43
18: 1.18, 1.13
19: 1.28, 1.28
20: 1.08, 1.09
21: 1.10, 1.02
22: 1.37, 1.18 (bad route choice)
finish: 0.58, 0.57

So, there is potential there:-)

Thanks for all the support!

running 22:21 [2] 4.2 km (5:19 / km)

Running with Marc and Fabien to get my legs loosened up. Feel really tight after the two qualies.

running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)

Felt surprisingly nervous last night and this morning, but got myself into the same mindset as yesterday despite it. Same warm-up map, felt tired warming up, but actually felt much better during the race.

WOC - Long qualification

Another good race for me, I was able to stick to my concept and really navigated well. I spiked every control but 1 where I lost 80 seconds in the green. I was very satisfied with my race in the finish and I am still happy with my time and my 12 minutes behind the leader. I was totally disappointed with the result. I couldn't believe that I would need to be 5 minutes faster to make the final, and I don't know where I lost all that time. I guess my play it safe, make it simple and keep track of everything was just not aggressive enough and I wasn't moving fast enough today. I actually felt good physically, but I realize now that means I wasn't pushing hard enough. It's disappointing, but I did it yesterday, so I am still pleased. Plus I had a really good technical race, so that is positive.

Great job to Sam. I am so glad to see her make the final. 2 for 2 as of now. :-)
