Susquehanna Stumble Long.
I'm still grinning from this, even after a two and a half hour drive home. I went into it not knowing if I could still do "long" events successfully and I far exceeded my expectations. The last Highlander I did, my hips were aching for the last couple of hours. In the last two years I've done a good bit of course setting which has had me on my feet for 4-5 hours at a stretch, but never pushing the pace or anything like that. So I just really had no idea what would happen.
Brad let me start an hour early and it meant that I just did the course instead of obsessing about whether or not I was going to be able to finish in the time limit (5 hours) and checking my watch every 2 minutes. It was also a two loop deal with a map exchange so I knew I could bail half way through if I needed to, so again I was very relaxed. Not having a bunch of people run away from me at the start was also nice. :)
So off I went on my own and didn't see a soul for the first loop although apparently 6 people passed me since I was the 7th one in. And I felt great and so kept going and continued to feel great all the way to the end. I had one short moment when trying to climb up a steep little hill to a control ("Q") my inner thigh suddenly cramped and I wondered if that was that, but as soon as I went back down the 10 feet it was fine and didn't hurt again. I was pretty clean and I'm pretty happy with my route choices (lots of contouring around instead of up and down) and how I did the windows.
Perfect day - warm and sunny - and the footing was dry so while there were a lot of downhills, the ones I couldn't or didn't go around and use a trail weren't bad.
And I'm still smiling!
