orienteering race 1:24:38 [3]

This was one of those disasters that I've had a couple times, where I'm doing well, pushing the pace a bit so I'm a little tired, get to where I think the control should be and don't see it. And then I hunt a bit, relocate and end up right back in the same place, but I know it's not there, so I relocate a different way and end up right back in the same place, and finally relocate completely carefully at a walk and know I am in the absolute right place and end up in the exact same place again and don't know what to do. This time I decide the control must be missing and so continue walking towards my next control only to see the flag hidden away. This has happened to me before on several occasions so you would think I'd know enough to look a little harder for the control if I think I'm in the right spot. But it's really hard to do that when you're pushing just a bit harder than your fitness might warrant. Anyway, about 10 minutes lost there plus probably another minute or so on the next leg when I had lost all motivation to push so walked most of the trail to the go control and finish.

The good news though is that I was able to push the pace. Before the race, my hip was hurting a bit, but once I started I never noticed it and jogged in a few places and it was fine, so jogged a good bit of our long trail leg. Very happy that I was able to do that.

orienteering race 29:38 [3]

Prelim: Fun little course. Really enjoyed it. Was reasonably clean and AP agrees! There was a 100m run to the finish on a big wide trail and since I felt like I had been moving well, and had had a good outing, I decided to try jogging a bit and it didn't hurt too much at all.

Final: Stiffened up quite a bit waiting for the second race, but was able to loosen up okay. Got a little confused out of the start, but pulled it together and don't think I lost much time. (I kept forgetting all weekend that the start triangle was not where we actually punched the start box but at the flag a little ways away and while I recovered quickly each time, you'd think I'd be a little more prepared the second and third time!) Another relatively clean run on anther fun little course.

Hanging a few streamers at the Water Gap on my way to NEOC. After I finished, I debated scrapping my plans to drive up there and doing another loop of rogaine controls and then doing another bunch Saturday and Sunday. I don't think I'll be able to get up there again for two weeks and so I'm starting to stress a bit about getting all the stakes out in time to give my vetters a chance to check them. But decided I really like the NE terrain and it would be fun to go. (And now home on Sunday very glad I did!)

Note

My leg felt great on Monday and the PT appointment went well. Nothing hurt at all. And I mean at all. And I was ecstatic.

She had me do a bunch of things to strengthen various muscles all around the joint. Again, nothing hurt although I could tell those muscles were getting a serious workout. And the plan was to do a short jog this morning before my appointment this afternoon to see how that went.

Yesterday, I felt a few twinges in the general area of where the pain used to be, but nothing like what it used to be. This morning the same. So I decided to try the planned jog. Well that was a bust. After about 10meters I could tell that the pain was there and after about 50 it was bad enough that I decided that the smarter course of action was to stop.

Grrrr.

I see the therapist this afternoon. Hopefully she can work her magic and get me to where I can do the courses this weekend at the Troll Cup.
