Orienteering race 1:17:27 [3] 4.27 mi (18:08 / mi) +129m 16:35 / mi
shoes: north face

"Long" course at Colonie Town Park, really a ~5.5k sprint-o. Set up by Frank. I even thought the controls were hung too high, a little too easy! But I still messed up. Lots of controls and I'm not going to bother with a play-by-play. I missed "lapping" one control and forgot to start the GPS trace until about 30-60s after the start, so don't read this too closely. But it was fun, you people championshiping should be jealous.

Mid-day run at Colonie Crossings... day off from teaching. Nice and cool about 58F, bit of a breeze. Felt good!

Orienteering meet at Norwottuck, a NEOC event. fpb drove me over, what a good sport! Great weather today too -- 50s and sunny. We packed that little parking lot.

Green course, straight line at 5.5k. Found them all, so start with the positive. Bobbled 2 a bit by inspecting one reentrant too far. Left 4 in a reasonable direction but got distracted by mountain bike trails and wound up next to the pond. The map near 9 was flaky; the trail leading in was indistinct and there were new bike trails running all over those little ridges and reentrants. By the time I got there a gang of 5 was searching for it... I was able to get in there OK once I realized the trail was all wrong. On my way to 10, I changed route, noticing that following the power line ride (to the left, by the quarry) saved over 50m of climb with just a bit more distance. Plus that route was sunny and scenic. So it won! At least one other guy did that too (he passed me).

Need to work on not getting confused in open woods. Contours, man, contours.
