Cycling 2:00:00 [2] 49.0 km (2:27 / km)
shoes: Jamis Quest
Training ride for the charity ride I'm doing next weekend. Emphasis was staying in a group and not going too fast. Started at Webster Park and then went E along the lake and back. No major hills, so pretty easy ride.
Cycling (Night) 2:00:00 [3] 47.0 km (2:33 / km)
shoes: Univega Gran Turismo (fixed)
Mi Square - Van Voorhis - Canfield, through Mendon Ponds (eerie this time of night with all the eyes glowing in the dark) then out Williams, L on Wardell, E on Lyons, Sheldon to Mendon Center, Bulls Sawmill, Chamberlain, Taylor, then E on Cheese Factory to Harloff, back on Taylor-Mi Square & home.
First true night road ride. Typically when I go out after dark, its either mtbing on trails or on the Canal Trail or LVT, so I don't have to worry about cars. Up to this point, I had resisted plunking down the $$$ for a real set of lights. Mostly b/c it the lights would be significantly more expensive than the bike I put it on (I only spent $75 on the Univega frame and the rest of the parts I just had lying around, after all).
Well, I bit the bullet and shelled out a handsome wad of greenbacks on a Dinotte 400L front and rear light set. Boy what a difference. This was really a novel experience. I ran the headlight at 50% power (200 lumens) since that was all I really needed and the 100% seemed like overkill. It also has a 10% setting. For the taillight, I ran on the hi-low strobe setting, putting out 240 ls on the top end of the strobe, I'm guessing 120 on the low end? Anyway, passing cars gave me a wide berth. I felt very visible. After almost 2 hours I still had ~25% charge left in the battery and didn't need to use the backup.
So, I now effectively have a larger number of hours in a day to squeeze a ride in. Sweet.
