Cycling 1:40:00 [4] 47.5 km (2:06 / km)
shoes: Paramount (fixed)

Mi Square - Van Voorhis, S on 64, W on Smith, WB Rd to Pond to Mendon Ctr, then Bulls Sawmill - Chamberlain - Taylor, W on Cheese Factory & S on Quaker Mtghouse, S on E Main and E on Cty Rd 19 to Ionia, back on 64

Quick AM ride before possible showers (and an O-meet) this afternoon. New gearing on the fixie (39Tx14T) helped a lot on the flats and downhills and was perfect for the rolling hills on the route.

Orienteering race 1:03:04 [4] 5.5 km (11:28 / km)

Green course at Webster. Only controls I had problems with were 9 & 10, 9 b/c I ran past it and had to loop back. 10 b/c I ended up taking a pretty circuitous route to get to the control. On a few controls, I got to the markers before I thought I should have - like 5, I was sure I had another 25m to go when I hit the control, so my pace-counting is clearly rusty from the winter.

Nicely set course (thanks rlshadow) and nice newly-mapped areas. Thunderstorms were a nice respite from the heat.

Hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Arrowhead - Park - RR Mills

Soccer 1:30:00 [3]

Game vs. Penfield Rangers. Both defenses were tight and both goalies played solid, so we had 0-0 going into the 2nd half. We made the first mistake, with a cross into the middle and no defender covering. Penfield took a 1-0 lead into the last 5 minutes, but the D finally got tired. After many good looks, consistent pressure finally led to a loose ball scramble in front of the Penfield net and a Pittsford goal.

Final Pittsford USC 1, Penfield Rangers 1

Cycling warm up/down 45:00 [2] 16.5 km (2:44 / km)
shoes: Panasonic

Cycling (PM) 2:00:00 [3] 50.6 km (2:22 / km)
shoes: Univega Gran Turismo (fixed)

Mi Square - Smith - Mendon Ctr, to Bulls Sawmill, Chamberlain & Taylor, E on Cheese Factory & S on Lanning to 5&20. E to Elton, through Ionia & back on 64

55F, very light misty drizzle. After an hour or so the road spray started to soak into my shoes, but didn't affect the ride at all.

Note
(rest day)

Dress rehearsal for the BSO concert next week. I know it's not orienteering related, but here's a plug for anyone so interested:

Brighton Symphony Orchestra Spring Concerts:

May 20, B'rith Kodesh, 7:30 PM

Free and open to the public, and it's a good program to boot. See website below for addresses and directions.

Cycling 2:00:00 [2] 49.0 km (2:27 / km)
shoes: Jamis Quest

Training ride for the charity ride I'm doing next weekend. Emphasis was staying in a group and not going too fast. Started at Webster Park and then went E along the lake and back. No major hills, so pretty easy ride.

Cycling (Night) 2:00:00 [3] 47.0 km (2:33 / km)
shoes: Univega Gran Turismo (fixed)

Mi Square - Van Voorhis - Canfield, through Mendon Ponds (eerie this time of night with all the eyes glowing in the dark) then out Williams, L on Wardell, E on Lyons, Sheldon to Mendon Center, Bulls Sawmill, Chamberlain, Taylor, then E on Cheese Factory to Harloff, back on Taylor-Mi Square & home.

First true night road ride. Typically when I go out after dark, its either mtbing on trails or on the Canal Trail or LVT, so I don't have to worry about cars. Up to this point, I had resisted plunking down the $$$ for a real set of lights. Mostly b/c it the lights would be significantly more expensive than the bike I put it on (I only spent $75 on the Univega frame and the rest of the parts I just had lying around, after all).

Well, I bit the bullet and shelled out a handsome wad of greenbacks on a Dinotte 400L front and rear light set. Boy what a difference. This was really a novel experience. I ran the headlight at 50% power (200 lumens) since that was all I really needed and the 100% seemed like overkill. It also has a 10% setting. For the taillight, I ran on the hi-low strobe setting, putting out 240 ls on the top end of the strobe, I'm guessing 120 on the low end? Anyway, passing cars gave me a wide berth. I felt very visible. After almost 2 hours I still had ~25% charge left in the battery and didn't need to use the backup.

So, I now effectively have a larger number of hours in a day to squeeze a ride in. Sweet.
