Event: Oceania 2019

12 PM

Orienteering 15:57 [3] 2.7 km (5:55 / km) +57m 5:21 / km
shoes: VJ Irock 2

Oceania sprint at Charles Sturt university. A bit sad not to get to run up on the hillside (though not sad that I missed out on climbing the hill in front of spectators!). I went OK and better than expected for this. Only 2 real mistakes - once I went to an underneath of bridge rather than top - even though I had picked it as being at the top, just forgot that part way through the leg when I thought I'd found a faster route than the one I was doing. The next major time loss was a small path direct to 10 that I did not see. I almost need a degree larger magnification in glasses for sprint maps!

Very impressed with my focus. A lot of people lost time at the control in the start area and the next one. I did not even realise I'd been back through there until I was watching the mayhem while manning the start later on.

Totally failed at silent start - both when starting myself and for others :). I don't think anyone minded!

2nd to Barbara after Jenny MP'd. Missed 9 which was easy to do given it was very near 6.

Just a short run after yesterday's efforts. Surprisingly feeling OK (muscle-wise) but I think quite tired and dehydrated. 2 coffees helped.

Not sure what happened to watch. Stopped short for some reason.

Ski 6:02:19 [3] 9.68 km (37:26 / km) +615m 28:24 / km

Backcountry ski lesson/tour with Nat and Al. Just the 3 of us in the group so made it perfect in terms of how challenging things were and the pace we made. Overall really enjoyed the day.

I think that we surprised the guide that we were all OK going up, and she was just as surprised at how we were all a bit cautious going down. I was the worst of the crowd and completely lost my ability to turn and stay upright, and subsequently just completely lost confidence. Still managed to enjoy the day, good to get out into a beautiful area, peaceful and quiet. Climbed the granite tor to top of Guthega Trig in ski boots and brand new goretex pants - very happy not to have put a hole in them and/or slid down - I was not a graceful sight!

Hoping that I never have to do another kick turn in my life! I did get better after some practice. That practice being about 3 times what the others needed to do after I slid down the hill on my back with q ski on after the first attempt!

Putting skins on/off far easier than expected and climbing with them amazingly easy :)
