Orienteering race 2:08:48 [5] ***** 9.2 km (14:00 / km) +310m 11:59 / km
16c shoes: Silva Pro Lite

US Champs Day 1...today's race counted as a WRE (world ranking event) so it made today's race all that more interesting. To be honest I was quite pleased with how I ran. I did not run it quickly, however, in retrospect that may have been to my advantage. While there were a couple of controls that gave me some trouble (#13, and also the infamous #1 which almost everyone blew). For most of the race I knew where I was on the map, made some pretty good route choices (i think) and more importantly executed those route choices fairly well. I was alos especially happy to discover after my race that some of my route choices that I thought were not so great were the route choices that the majority of the other girls made...that doesn't mean that they were the best, but at least we were all thinking alike.

Overall and especially in retrospect I am really quite pleased with how I ran. My time wasn't stellar, but not as far off from some of the more elite women as I expected to be. What pleased me the most though was going over the course with some of the other girls. I was glad to know that what I encountered out in the woods and the decisions I made were fairly consistent with my fellow competitiors. I've been out of orienteering for a couple of years and now that I am trying to return to at least a shade of what I once was it is good to know that my head is still in the right place. Although my skills are a little rough and I am still quite slow. Its still good to know I haven't "lost it" completly...those skills will sharpen the more I get out in the woods (and i will), but at least I haven't lost it all.

US Champs Sprint...not that I am in any sort of sprinting shape, but I had a really great time on the course. Although I always get really nervous for sprints since I have completely blown them in the past (all it takes is that one error...) I really love how fast paced and exhilarating they are. This sprint was no exception. I did have a couple of 30 sec errors and one error that cost me about 2 min - on my way to #11 I made a parallel error and ran up the wrong spur. Since I'm not in any sort of speed running shape I didn't mind that my race wasn't as clean as it should have been and I just had a great time out there on a beautiful day.
