Orienteering race 1:05:59 intensity: (16 @1) + (11:49 @2) + (26:06 @3) + (27:48 @4) **** 6.68 km (9:53 / km) +230m 8:26 / km
ahr:147 max:163 (injured) shoes: Inov8 O-Roc 350

JK day 3, Craig a' Barns, M40S: 4.9km / 200m.
A mixed bag: good to start but blew #3 badly, by 6+ minutes, allowing Patrick to catch me up 8 mins by #5; then I had a good, relatively focussed session of nip & tuck, with me eventually throwing away a 90s lead at #13, when I couldn't actually see the control feature (a crag) on my 1:15k map, as it was obscured by a thick contour line. Patrick took a better line than me to #14 so I ended up about 20s down on him in the finish funnel. It'd still have been a respectable time, only I threw it all away, getting distracted by the shouting and neglecting to punch the final control. Idiot.
Moving OK today, but that's because I was so heavily numbed by prescription painkillers that I probably wouldn't have noticed if both of my legs had been scythed off by a particularly aggressive bramble (until I fell over). I was totally crock just trying to get out of bed, so decided that brufen wouldn't cut it and dug out the big guns. Normally I'm reticent to use painkillers but, since my back's already knackered and is now trained to be hyper-sensitive to pain, I gave it a shot. It worked well; I might actually continue to use it as a temporary way forward, to enable me to run the odd O event, but I'll not use the drugs for 'normal' training. I'd rather keep tabs on how much damage I'm doing.

Orienteering race 1:02:57 intensity: (37 @1) + (5:50 @2) + (29:32 @3) + (24:32 @4) + (2:26 @5) **** 6.39 km (9:51 / km) +225m 8:23 / km
ahr:149 max:171 (injured) shoes: Inov8 O-Roc 350

JK Day 2, Dunalastair, M40S: 5.3km/240m.
Very sore even before starting; my back had been bad all week, and my pre-run job of putting out the maps was a poor choice. Popped some brufen and went for it anyway. Moved very slowly and cautiously, deliberately ignoring every opportunity to stretch out and speed up, but just ground out the same slow pace regardless of incline or terrain. It actually helped my navigation a little, I think, and I reckon I could only find ca. 3 mins of mistakes in the course. A distant 2nd, in the end, nine minutes down on a similarly crocked Patrick, but 8 mins ahead of the third placed runner - what were they all doing?

ahr:128 max:151 (injured)

Only fit for an easy cycle today; back has been sore since Tuesday, and I'm a bit achey all over - succumbing to yet another of Eilidh's nasty viral gifts from nursery. Bah. Short pootle out, deliberately slow pace. TRIMP 60.3.

ahr:150 max:172 (injured)

Far too nice a day to spend in the gym, but my back was a bit too sore to cycle, so it had to be the cross-trainer. Out of practice.
