QOC Patuxent - Green

Lots of reentrants and lots of mud -- I feel like this was a good prep for the Flying Pig... LOL.

Up the road past the intersection toward 1. Followed the ditch that goes up to the NW into the area of reentrants, then over the big spur to the control. Around the left side of the marsh/pond, up the trail a short way, and following the stream toward 2, except I somehow convinced myself that I needed to be along the bigger stream, then realized that I was not along the side of the slope as I needed to be. Luckily only a short way to the south was the control. Back to the big stream and then up the reentrant to 3. The bottom of the reentrants were full of mud, with leaves on top, so you never knew what was solid until stepping into it. Back down the reentrant and around the corner, through more squishy stuff, to number 4. This is the second control I have ever had on a crashed/abandoned airplane carcass (the other one being at West Point)

Crossed the stream again, had trouble climbing the extremely muddy bank on the far side (even with metal spikes) and slid back down a few times before clawing my way to the top. Took the trail in the direction of 5, wiping mud from compass and map on the way. Cut in at a trail bend and straight to the reentrant and 5. Popped out on the trail to the west, took trails down to the road, went West along the road, cut through the white woods a little to the trail that runs just East of 6. Then went down the branch of the reentrant to the junction. This was another area with lots of mud in the bottom.

South on the trail, crossing the creek, cut across the white woods heading East. At the little hilltop (which had a control on it) went south, crossing the trail, to number 7. Then went pretty much straight to 8 which was another fun one to try to climb out of. Stayed up top and followed the creek down to the end of the spur, then dropped down and crossed the bigger stream and went right up the reentrant to 9. Went straight to 10, picking up a small section of that trail in between. Then went right back out to the trail and followed it down, across the marsh, through the boardwalk type section, and hooked up with the tral/road that runs straight up to the big field. Cut over just below the little green blob, punched 11, then headed for the finish. Sadly this was probably the most disorganized plan of the day and I ended up in a bunch of thorny crap, fought my way through it, came out East of the restroom building and ran across to the finish.

Wore the HRM for the Forerunner, and was pleasantly surprised to find it not at all uncomfortable. (I did wear it the other day on a trial walk around the neighborhood, but that was more about making sure everything would work OK) A lot of time was in the 160-180 range which I think is pretty good. This is another thing I need to learn more about.

It was so nice out that I went around the neighborhood loop twice instead of hitting the gym. Might as well enjoy this weather since it's going to get cold again soon :-(
