Longer courses are not my forte, but I think I did okay with this. I can read this terrain pretty well. I was again able to execute almost everything according to plan, with a few hesitations mostly due to the rides being sometimes hard to see. I didn't take the best route out of the arena after the spectator control. I did, embarrassingly, mess up the penultimate control. Looking at my route, I was right on a line for it, but thought I was off. For some reason I decided to divert to the right and ended up checking out a control on the rocks that wasn't mine. (But then I knew where mine should be, and it was.) Overall, a good weekend navigation-wise and lots of fun even though I ended up 3/3 in my class.
It was nice to go back to the house and shower and take a nap before leaving. Bill also came back from his weekend trip so I spent a little more time with him and Phil and left at about 6. Things got exciting on the way home. First a tornado warning came on my phone and the radio and said the possible tornado cell would be near Glen Rock at 8, which was almost exactly when I would pass by there on 83. So I stopped at the welcome center and waited a bit for that line to pass through.
Once I got rolling again, just a few miles later (in the dark and the rain) driving in the right lane I just see this huge splash in the left lane ahead of me and this jeep flies in the air and lands on the roof. So I had to stop and call 911 for that, which I guess because of the storm took like 4 tries to go through. The people crawled out and were VERY lucky, she had some glass cuts on her leg and he had a dislocated or broken shoulder. So a bunch of us who stopped waited with them in the pouring rain until the police and ambulance came, meanwhile traffic is in the unblocked lane just whipping by the upside down car like nothing. This is the second accident I've had to help in the same area in 5 months while driving home from orienteering.
