Note

Staying with the Legend before the STSW and it seems Tash has dumped him for the New Man and a trip to Melbourne and now I am in the Spring Rogaine. Better start training

Aus Champs Relay Moondyne Road

M55 Team with Rob West and Ken Post, with me 1st leg.

I knew that the first two runners would be Geoff Lawford and Rob Vincent so it was a race for 3rd in the rest of the field. Long 1st leg had people guessing and split the field up straight away, I went right and when I came out along the fence I could see Bruce Bowen 100m ahead. The legs were sluggish on the steady climb but Bruce was confused in the circle and I got the control 1st. Saw Phil Taylor and Tony Radford on the way to 2 and battled to get past them on the rest of the course but managed to get away on the last couple when they made small mistakes. pretty clean run through with a hesitation at 12 where I was a little off line and there were lots of rocks to pick from and I did not want to make a mistake at that stage.

Managed to get in 3rd of the start block so happy with the run.

Again a nice area and good courses from peterk and Russell Candy controlling.

Aust Long Distance Champs Warranine Brook

First starter and screwed up the 1st control stopping short and looking on various rocks and lost 1min, then went wide to #2 and lost another 1 min and Nick Dent 2nd Starter caught me at 2 and started to get away but I was able to haul him in and we played tag for the rest of the course. Pretty spot on through 3, 4, 5, 6 then on the long leg both Nick and I went east of the knoll when it looks like west might have been a bit quicker. We both end up too high at 7 and I went down, correctly, and Nick up so I got a 30sec break which was not enough as Nick was back equal 11. Managed to run in a few meters in front of Nick but still nearly 2 minutes down. Ted came through for a convincing win 3 minutes ahead of Roch with Adrian and Bert in 4th and 5th places me 6th and then Bruce by about 30 sec

Good race and would not have been able to go much faster with a loss of maybe 2 minutes total on control circle errors

Nice map with more detail and tree cover than I had expected.

Road Cycling 1:24:00 [4] 40.93 km (29.2 kph) +280m

Chasing Eoin around the river - good job Eoin was

a) on my old Piave
b) riding in runners on flat pedals
c) never got out of the LCR

Or I would have been dropped early, hung on until just before Majestic climb.

We were on 30kph pace but lost it on the last few Km

Peterdine Scatter event as part of the Karnival

Took O-Ing's start and did course 2 - 18 controls out of 22.

Nice run around Peterdine, a bit warm but lots of elephant tracks and people coming and going from the controls so pretty straight forward.

ran about 70% and walked the rest

Up the Swan River with Liz, Bruce & Nicole to Bayswater and then back to East Perth for coffee. Three dolphins were putting on a show in the river which was nice to see

Mountain Biking 45:22 [3] 16.68 km (22.1 kph) +256m
shoes: Avanti Mountain Bike

Blew the tyres up on the Mountain Bike and went for a ride around Kings Park to make sure it was working ahead of the MTBO weekend

Gears slipped a couple of times but otherwise all seems fine and good to go for the events.

Lots of people in the park

Australian Sprint O Champs - Curtin

Pretty poor effort, caught Rob West at the 1st control as he had gone off line then ran out 180 deg backwards to the start, corrected but never got into the right level of concentration and made at least two major nav errors after and well off the pace.

Good course and good area. Hope that I am better focused in the Sprint South West events.

Aust Middle Distance Champs - Lovers Ridge

Pretty scrappy run, lots of little mistakes and off line and overshot several controls. Well off the pace of the faster runners added to the nav errors - ended up 15th.

Nice area with good gully system and then scruffy rock

Hamstring felt better than yesterday but not 100%

WA State Long Champs - Spice Brook

new version of the 1989 Paul Myers & Co map, unacknowledged which is a bit sad, I think remaps should reference the prior map. Not too many changes over 25 years. I set or controlled the original state champs with Ian Fletcher the Technical Director of the Karrack Karnival and I had also previously set a 12 Hour Rogaine from close to the finish in 1982 with Frank Marshall.

Lots of great flowers to distract the runners from the heavy rain.

Had a decent run through the first 6 controls without seeing hardly any other M60s. 6 - 7 I thought it would be easy to miss this one and then missed it and drifted northwest and hit the track, circled around and attacked from the far side over the creek where I saw Tony Whittaker and another person who I had been ahead of at the previous couple of controls heading out on the track. Crossed and saw Nick Dent 50m from the control so had a good line to get the control. Took the straight route to 8 and was surprised to see Nick coming down into the control, he had overshot the control. Tracked Nick and we found the last bush control together - a team is always good!

Ended 9th I think, and 3rd WA

Hamstring sore but not broken so was cautious and hopefully it will hold together for the rest of the carnival.

Also lost my glasses which I thought I had put in my pocket when they got to wet to see out of, so the detailed rock maps next weekend might be interesting with the naked eye!
