Orienteering race 59:23 [3] *** 6.07 km (9:47 / km) +170m 8:35 / km
spiked:6/8c shoes: VJ Integrators

Callophyla H3 Course.

Tossed up between H2 or H3 and decided since the weather was pretty crappy with lots of rain around, 50mm overnight at Bickley, that the H3 was a better option.

The area was at the southern end of the map so a fair bit of dead running to get to the detail on the north side of the Green Hill. Hit the rock surfaces before #1 fine and then to #2 across and down through the creek past a few bigger rocks and contour to the control. Longish leg to #3 but the rain had made it too hard to see through my glasses so opted to take them off and run blind! Took the straight line, picking off the features along the way, the ridge line might have been better but I was not confident of picking the details without my glasses. The control was on the edge of the map so was careful at the end to spot the attackpoint of the rock surface and dropped onto the control. #4 was easy enough just had to keep going with the creek to the right, seemed a long way so hesitated a bit before the control as I did not want to overrun it.

#5 was a water drop on boulder field, which was much more extensive than the single triangle on the map, saw a couple of other people there so whilst I was a bit off line did not lose much time. Ran out of #5 a bit off line, sort of went the way Tony Whittaker was going which was a different course! #6 was back across the ridge, kept too high after crossing the ridge and saw a control from H4 and was distracted, but worked out quick enough that I was high so dropped down and picked out the rock surfaces and into the control. Slog back up and over the hill to #7, went a bit wide to the north to cut a few contours and miss some of the green. Saw the knoll and then went to the wrong rock before the control.

Nice to be back for a run in the bush and the worst of the rain held off, but not much of a picnic day. Pipped by Anthea by 3 minutes for 2nd place.

Road Cycling 59:57 [3] 27.1 km (27.1 kph) +201m
shoes: Colnago CLX

Show start still getting back into the local time zone.

Headed out on the Scarborough and back route, strong blustery NW wind made for a slow out and quick back. Just managed to crack the hour, would have been a few seconds quicker if I had not been held up by a few cars that were dithering at intersections and roundabouts.

City Walking 4:00:00 [1] 10.0 km (24:00 / km)

Checked out the cathedrals in the city and the Olympic park / sport museum. Note that they celebrate Orienteering in the museum with the highlight of Minna Kauppi

Found a great little cafe, Regatta, near the Sibelius park monument, did the ferris wheel on the harbour ( free with our Helsinki Pass otherwise not worth the money) listened to some Finnish rock music in the park near the Market Square. Bought some more smoked salmon and fresh raspberries.

Great visit well worth it and will be back

Running 27:25 [3] 4.6 km (5:58 / km) +57m 5:37 / km
shoes: Blue Asics

Morning run, 5 hours after the sun came up in Helsinki. Saw a few other runners 100% of whom had tights, long shirts and most with jackets. Tough me had shorts and long sleeved thermal Helly Hansen top, felt virtuous. Had one lady say "umpalumpa" of something similar in Finish as I ran past her, I assume it was a friendly greeting, but could have been "mind the dog poo" who knows.

City Walking 5:00:00 [1] 12.0 km (25:00 / km)

Lots of walking in Helsinki and Islands great place to visit when the sun is shinning. Suomenlinna Island must be a fabulous sprint map

Total estimate of distance but time is real enough.
