Note

Big travel day. Left Colby KS with J-J at around 8 am. Stopped for lunch in Wamego with my Aunt Fran, age 96, then pressed on to St Louis, where I hopped a plane and on home. J-J pressed on for Chicago.

Orienteering race 1:31:20 [4] *** 6.6 km (13:50 / km) +260m 11:34 / km
spiked:10/14c

US Champs day 2 at Big Sandy. Mostly a pretty good run, but a huge error at #2 and lesser ones at #1, 9 and 13. Complex area, absent the error at #2 could have had 2nd M55, but instead an ignominious 5th. Moving better than day 1, perhaps because of less climb and slightly lower altitude.

Note

Travel day. Left BV for Norman OK at around 2 pm. By around 5 or so got a call to the effect that my meeting had been postponed indefinitely, so J-J and I reformed our plans and headed for I-70 and KS. We were looking for some supper, but in SE Colorado the nearest restaurant is at least 100 miles away. Finally found some chow in Burlington CO on I-70. Mighty tasty.

Orienteering race 1:02:39 [4] *** 5.54 km (11:19 / km) +310m 8:50 / km
spiked:12/12c

US Champs day 1 long green course. Perfect navigation - ok maybe a few 10 second blips - but no speed and had to walk all the hills. Finished well back of the leaders. Remarkable how much harder it is to go uphill here than at Laramie.

Note

Golf at Collegiate Peaks with Phil - we rented clubs and hacked around 9 holes, getting in just ahead of the lightning.

Orienteering 20:00 [2]

Model event in BV. Only got to 2 controls before it got too threatening, and then hotfooted it back to the car in the beginning stages of a daunting hailstorm

Orienteering race 1:02:09 [4] *** 5.0 km (12:26 / km)
spiked:11/14c

Day 3 of the 1000 day Green course. Greatly distressing error - took almost 15 minutes for a leg of about 120 meters. Just couldn't find the damn thing. Ended up relocating off my #13, and then missing the next one as well. Otherwise, the run was fine.

Orienteering race 23:22 [5] 3.1 km (7:32 / km)

Crystal Relays leg 2. Just can't run with the fast folks. Got the map in 2nd, but passed by three runners to come back 5th. At least it kept the team in the hunt, and hunt they did. Great runs by Hillary, Jeff and Sam!!!

Orienteering (control pickup) 50:00 [3]

Picked up 8 controls from the relay in a persistent and scary thunderstorm. Cold, glasses fogged, etc. Always fun to find those orange lampshades, though. Had to stay in the shower a long time to get warm again when I got back to the hotel

Tuesday Aug 15, 2006 #

Orienteering race 34:03 [5] 2.9 km (11:44 / km)

Team sprint. Running really well for first half, but then got lost on #6 for at least 4 minutes

Note

Prairie golf! A pretty fine round, despite one penalty shot for a lost ball. 36, which I believe was 2nd best overall. A fine course set by the Goodwins, pere et fils.

Orienteering race 1:31:31 [4] *** 5.1 km (17:57 / km)
spiked:6/10c

NIght-o - not my favorite. A great deal of trouble finding a couple of them - a good 35 minutes of hunting around. Not much speed or endurance. Occasionally people went pelting by at a much greater speed.

Sunday Aug 13, 2006 #

Orienteering race 1:02:56 [4] 5.5 km (11:27 / km)

Day 2 Green - only two errors, but about 2-3 minutes each, so pretty annoying. Otherwise pretty accurate, if not speedy.

Saturday Aug 12, 2006 #

Orienteering race 55:09 [3] *** 5.52 km (9:59 / km)
spiked:11/11c

Green course at day 1 of Western Champs in WY at 1000 day. Very pleasant course, and one of my best runs. Not fast, but very accurate.

Orienteering race 24:57 [4] 2.52 km (9:54 / km)

Prologue. Good effort, but all alone most of the while, except for sightings of Carl Childs from time to time. About 3 minutes of errors, plus usual stops and starts.

Orienteering race 1:05:19 [4] *** 6.57 km (9:56 / km)
spiked:10/14c

The chase at Pelican Bay. Mostly a very good run, but two abominable clunker mistakes on 10 and 11. Ran most of it by myself, including the critical 6 to 10.

Thursday Aug 10, 2006 #

Orienteering race 59:20 [4] *** 5.7 km (10:25 / km)
spiked:15/14c

Stampede. Actually a pretty good run for me. I felt pretty wiped out after the golf this morning, but navigated well and moved better than I expected. With folks generally I think of as faster runners, including Glen Tryson, Steve Gregg, Mario, the Childs brothers.

Note

18 holes at U Wyoming course with Peter and John Goodwin (and Rhonda for 9). Pretty tiring for my sore right foot. A fine day, though, and good company.

Orienteering race 24:33 [4] 2.9 mi (8:28 / mi)

Sprint at 1000 day. Part of a long day. Got up at 3:15 eastern to fly out at 6. Arrived in Laramie at 3:15 MDT, straight out to the race. Pretty tired

cycling 34:00 [3] 8.9 mi (3:49 / mi)
weight:170.5lbs

Tried to sneak out for 15 or so this afternoon, but the cell phone rang after 2, so cut it short. From near the SE corner of Lake McDonough down to N. Hartford, up 44 to 181 to Pleasant Valley and over Savile Dam to go S on 219 and back. Pleasant day, but had to rush back for a call.

Note

Golf with Chris around 5:30. Playing not too badly (incl a birdie on the 4th at Simsbury, but got behind a train of the most abominably slow players ever and cut it short. After the 5th (in about 1:45) cut over to the 9th and then home.
