Gym 25:00 [3]
weight:163lbs

workout today was 5 sets of 3 deadlifts. Some general warm-up routines, and then a set of 10 deads at 135 to warm up, then did the sets with 185-195-205-215-205. Felt a few little pulls on the fourth set, so backed off a notch. Then some shoulder exercises from a book I got recently. L shoulder has been a bit worse of late, and the exercises exposed how much weaker it is than the right.

Orienteering race 31:55 [4] 2.8 km (11:24 / km)

1st race of Hollis O-ringen - Beaver Brook

Good effort except for loss of focus and couldn't find #8, losing over 5 minutes before relocating from #7. Otherwise felt good moving and readng map. Liked my new NB fell running shoes.

Orienteering race 25:43 [4] 2.38 km (10:48 / km)

Race # 2 of Hollis o-ringen at Hollis Brookline High School, which is really just eastern part of Beaver Brook map. Another generally good effort, although tiring a bit. Missed # 1 because I thought I was aiming off left, but ended up a bit right and then headed further right first. Otherwise went pretty well, although fast guys (like Ernst) motored right by me.

Orienteering race 23:32 [4] *** 2.12 km (11:06 / km)
spiked:10/11c

Race #3 of Hollis o-ringen at Hollis Elementary School. 1:3000 map, and map a little tough to get into. Particularly enjoyed #2 and #3: nice footing and running with confidence right into them. Like the first two races, just one error. Missed a bit low on #5 and got out near power line before turning back, and seeing a train of about 4 runners who had been behind me and who were now punching ahead.

Note

Missed the last two races, as Erik fell and twisted his ankle. There was some concern it might be broken, so we left early and got back to the ER for an x-ray. Happy news is it is "only" a sprain, which caused a lot of relief on all our parts. Thanks so much to Lex, Ross, Ian, Sam, Peter, Dean and any others who stopped to help, helped to carry him out, and generally looked after him. He is already on the mend.

Running 50:00 [3] 4.5 mi (11:07 / mi)
weight:163.5lbs

Along the trail from Pleasant Valley S to the guitar factory in New Hartford and back, with Rhonda and Hazel. Foot still quite sore. Massage and ice last night helped a bit, but it is quite bothersome. Had a brief chat with a couple of boys who were scrambling around in one of the erosion gullies along the trail. Hazel jumped down into the gully to see if that was fun, and they helped her get back out, as it was pretty deep. Pleasant kids, around 10 or 11, just boys having fun in the woods. A fine thing for kids to do.

Note

A little rogaine practice this AM in Litchfield with our neighbor Chris and Erik, who has the day off from school. My foot is still really aching. Could I have a stress fracture? Just not recovering at all from the Highlander.

Running 27:20 [3] 5.0 km (5:28 / km)

Had to pick Erik and Brian up from cross country practice, so Rhonda and I decided to run the Stratton Brook race course. Pretty fun. Some pretty good hills. We are not in any danger of making the team.

Gym 20:00 [5]
weight:163lbs

various warm up activities, then "Fran", alternating sets of thrusters (combined deep squat and overhead push press) and pullups. 21 reps first set, then 15 then 9. I used 30 lb dumbbells for the thrusters, instead of the 25s I had used the last few times. What a difference! Time for the workout was 13:00, compared to under 8 with the 25s.

Note
(rest day)

Still very sore right foot and sore legs. I did go out and walk a bit. 2 hours at Breezy Hill with the Land Trust's forester. Also a busy afternoon watching Nysse's cross country meet (he was second in 16:59 for 3.0 miles), having a visit from my friend Tony, and going to an open space commission meeting.
