Some more laurel wrangling, and then Zack and I switched over to loading the Polaris with fill left over from when we built the barn, and hauling it over to the so-called useless hill (Zack's name) to fill in some holes and smooth out some rocky patches. Also while we were there we winched out two really substantial rocks and a stump left over from the logging we did in 1998. I'll dress it up with some wood chips and it should be pretty fine.

At the Swan property of the Canton Land Trust with Rhonda. They are promoting hiking 8 of their trails as a challenge this summer, and this is one of them. Nice enough place, but the trail is too stony to really be pleasant walking, and the trail marking is a bit confusing.

With Tullio at the lake. Came across this rather substantial snapping turtle, who seemed to be operating with a disadvantage. Looks like she is missing her left rear leg, and has a substantial break in the rear left quadrant of the carapace. Interesting serpentine track in the dirt. Not sure what she was up to. When we came back the other way, say 40 minutes later, she was gone.

The plan was 2 dog loops, but Zack flagged me down on my way past the barn and recruited me for log splitting.

Note

Split some firewood, then spread about a dozen loads of chips on the trails. Worked off about half of the four big truckloads we had, so plenty of room to acquire some more. Put a lot on the hospital loop, covering up a lot of pointy rocks.

Nothing I would call training, but a lot of time in the forest. Laurel wrangling in the morning, spread 7 loads of wood chips in the afternoon, and after that helped Zack cut down a couple of compromised trees, stack the tops for later chipping, and buck up the limbs and the useful part of the trunk for firewood.

Thought we were going to Stanclift Cove, but it was inexplicably closed, after being open yesterday. Although I have a theory. They said it was only going to be open to local residents, which is against CT law. So maybe they got shut down for that.

Anyway, we went to try out Winchester Lake instead. Nice place, not many people there, quite undeveloped. However, a lot of just submerged rocks and snags, and we banged the foot paddles on one and bent them a bit. So if I go back it will be with conventional kayak paddles.

Zack found this guy in the basement and vacuumed him up with a dustbuster.



He was then humanely released, more or less, in the yard.



The verdict according to my friend Jay is that he is a dark fishing spider. Large and a little scary looking but relatively harmless. Or perhaps, given the size, I should say she. Females are twice the size of males in the fishing spider game.
