Townsend SF BYOM Green, 5.3 km. Pretty clean, just an inefficient route to #3, and a little futzing about at #7 (I went right by it, but didn't see the QR code on the opposite side of a tree).

Livelox (an exciting tight race!)

Hiking with a map, actually, going to the other parking area where Nancy was doing the Orange (she had dropped be off at the Green start before driving over there).

Rutland State Forest (maybe?). On the way home from T-H, just parked on the side of the road and started on a forest road through crummy woods, then turned onto a much smaller trail (and took a big header when I caught my left foot on the stub of a sapling that somebody had helpfully cut off with an inch or two remaining). That eventually ended up in back yards (and at one point a shooting range with a man-shaped target), and the woods had gotten much better, so I went off trail, and ended up in a large area of diffuse marsh, eventually coming out on a road. Pretty much completely lost, I summoned up some topology and applied the "just keep turning right" rule. I encountered some people at one intersection, but didn't remember the name of the road where I had parked my car, so I couldn't ask them for directions. But the strategy worked, and I was back at the car soon enough.

Mary Cummings Park & Whispering Hill Woods, CSU sprint meet, Long, 2.9 km, 5th. Nancy had mentioned this a few days ago and then forgot, and we were supposed to sign up by Tuesday, but we didn't until today, and fortunately they seemed to have enough maps. Nice little park, enjoyable course. Pretty clean run except for on #6, when I drifted too far right and then managed to outguess myself until I hit the pipeline and realized everything was about 90 degrees off. But when I finally got to the control and was leaving, the two people I had passed, who I figured would have gotten back ahead of me, came in apparently from the same direction I had, so I guess they must have followed me (that was not a good strategy). So I lost a couple of minutes there, which meant I was within striking range of everybody except Keegan.

Neighborhood walk, In The Dim. After a kind of rough day due to vaccine side effects, not horrible, but just felt moderately crappy and had to take excedrin three times (11 PM, 5 AM, 1 PM) after which each time I then snoozed for a couple of hours. Walked past quite a bit of trash, but hadn't remembered to bring any bags to pick it up.

Just a casual loop across the street. Out of respect for Clark, I wanted to avoid using my car at all today, but it was too wet in the morning to ride my bike across town to get my shot. I will try to keep it in the garage for the next few days, though.

I don't see an obit on line for Clark at this point, and I wonder what happened. He went from 25 straight days of 5 km on the rowing ergometer (with Nordic Trak mixed in) in March, followed by another nine days of hiking with a pack up until April 3, then he was quiet for a week but came back for a 2 km rowing session on April 12. Then a wheelchair ride on April 27, and now he's gone.

Clark was a good guy.

Some streets with Nancy, she wanted company because she was feeling a little beat in the wake of her second Moderna dose. We picked up a couple of bagfuls of trash. But this was one of the weirdest walks ever, truly deserving of the "only in New England" label. Roughly speaking, we went up Haynes Road in Townsend and came back on Wheeler Street in Pepperell. There are only houses on one side of Haynes, so all of the houses have even numbers. Same deal with Wheeler, houses only one one side, all even numbers. But on Haynes, the numbers increase as you go north, and on Wheeler, they increase as you go south. All of that would be only very slightly weird, but there's once more detail that pushes it into Bizarro Land: Haynes and Wheeler are the same road! It runs right along the border, with the actual town line being on one side of the street or the other, or sometimes just a hair back from the shoulder so that people have razor-thin wedges of frontage that's in the wrong town. Your neighbor across the street lives in a different town, on a different road. We realized this because the house numbers on the mailboxes appeared to be almost random, so we checked the Massachusetts property map when we got home. Very strange.

With Nancy, a couple of roads in Townsend with a bit of a shortcut on a trail. We got startled on Tyler Rd. by a guy shouting; turned out he was hollering at his dog that rad out across the road to see the interesting people. The dog wouldn't respond to voice commands at all, and was running back and forth across the road, so that a couple of cars had to stop and wait, and the guy's wife came out and tried to grab the dog or send it back to the house, all to no avail, it kept running around us and jumping up on us. The solution came when their son called from the adjacent house, and the dog found that to be more interesting and took off to play with him. But in the process of all this I was close enough to get a good look at the woman, who turned out to be a friend of mine from all the way back in elementary school. So that was a cool little reunion.

125/5. So, this was interesting. We walked past a lot of trash when we were westbound on Tyler Rd., and I had a couple of grocery bags in my pocket that we were figuring on using to pick up some bottles and cans and whatnot shortly before we got back to the car. But then we had an idea. We picked up bottles starting at the turnaround on Tyler, but took a focused approach, taking only Fireball cinnamon whisky bottles. In a little over 2 km, we got 120 Fireball bottles (1 750 ml, 1 200 ml, and 118 50 ml nips). Gilchrest St. was actually pretty clear of trash, so we picked up a few other things at the end.
