Scottish Day 6 - Glen Affric North
Wow. The most relentlessly tough race I've ever run. It was a good area, steep but better going than the previous day. Thankfully.
It was a steady run rather than a hard one, and I really struggled when the terrain got rougher, especially to #9, where I also made a mistake in the circle. I didn't make many mistakes other than that, but often didn't have much of a plan and drifted from control to control a bit.
Had a good head to head battle with Keith. He was often sharper into the control where I was a bit hesitant; I was maybe a bit quicker when the terrain allowed but not enough to run away. Joined various trains with varying levels of navigation. It was a bit of a shame that despite several long legs there wasn't really any major route choice, with only one sensible option that I can see to #5, 6, 8, 9, 13, 17, 19 and 22.
Overall, just really pleased to get round and enjoy myself given where I was on day 1.

Scottish Day 5 - Glen Affric South
Haha, from a race that could hardly have suited me better to one that couldn't have been worse. It was no place to be running tentatively that was for sure.
But anyway, I orienteered horribly on the first section in the green, and lost big time (4-5 mins) to #8. One way of looking at it: it's a naughty little control in vaguely mapped undergrowth in a one contour reentrant. Another: I knew that from the map so why no good attack point? Also made huge direction mistakes out of #9 and #10.
The course should have been cut short from #17 to #20 as the windblow was unbelievably bad, and even if it had been mapped there was no point messing about in it.
The last stretch was actually quite nice but I was shattered.

Scottish Day 4 - Darnaway
Very good run, best of the week. It was nice to keep up the same intensity over a longer distance.
Blotted my copybook a bit with a silly error at #13 where I jumped onto the ridge one reentrant early but then thought I'd gone one late so turned back. Needless - I should have known.
But other than that, pretty good technically and getting close to full speed physically.

Scottish Day 3 - Darnaway
A middle distance race was just the thing for me at this stage and I had a good run. Ran within myself and very tentatively on the downhills especially, but not pussyfooting about like Day 2.
I didn't do so well in the green between #6 and #10. Didn't hold the right line out of #6 and drifted too Far East, which took a little while to correct. Then hesitant for a few controls, including the bingo #10, but generally relocated well so I didn't lose huge amounts.
Great terrain for a middle race, Darnaway now one of my favourite areas.

Scottish Day 2 - Strathfarrar
Touch and go whether I would run this or any other days. But I tried a jog to the start and on the soft ground with heavy strapping it was ok. So I went out on a training run and really enjoyed it. The area was tough but I wasn't worried about moving quickly, if anything the opposite.
Only time loss was at #11 where I would swear the control was in the wrong place, at the S edge of an area of flatter land.

Scottish Day 1 - Achagour
Bit of a disaster. First half was ok but quite scrappy. Sometimes decent navigation, but also poor attention to detail caught me out at #7 and #15. I missed the road run at #15!
So it was going ok but not stellar - and then I turned my left ankle badly on the way to #17. From then on it was damage limitation and I suffered a bit on the way to #23.
