Orienteering race 54:30 [5]

Oban 2011 - Day 6
Ardchattan
Was feeling pretty tired by this day. Lost time on #2 as I climbed too much and was reluctant to believe I had to lose height again to get to the control. Also #12 I was almost at the control but lost faith, turned round to see another control on the same feature back up the hill behind me and climbed to find it wasn't mine. Came 4th.
So yeah 2nd overall only 1point behind. Think the week has proved to me that I'm becoming more consistent: 2 firsts, 2 seconds and 2 fourths :) Looking forward to a bit of a rest now!

Orienteering race 51:18 [5]

Oban 2011 - Day 5
Loch Nell and Shenavallie
Didn't get off to a great start when 10steps from the start line I slipped and got my backside muddy, then took another step and fell flat on my face! Overshot the first control, was slightly low. After that it picked up and I caught Julia at #6 who unfortunately unknown to me also had a punching start 2mins before me which was a shame cos otherwise I would have left a bigger gap. Managed to stay ahead till #9 where I got the direction of exit wrong for 5steps which was enough for her to punch behind me and be off. Stopped short on #15 which is very unlike me, totally lost focus and if I'd just looked up I would have seen the control, which I only did after I'd wasted a minute. Came 2nd.

Orienteering race 59:17 [5]

Oban 2011 - Day 4
Torinturk
This was a good day :) No mistakes to speak of :) Not sure if my route on the long leg was the fastest but it had basically no height climb which possibly meant I was less tired for the rest of the course when others started to make mistakes. Came 1st :)

Orienteering race 54:24 [5]

Oban 2011 - Day 3
Creag Mhic Chailean
Enjoyed it much more than the day before. #3 caught me out, wish I'd taken the gate and a slightly higher line into the control as there was more definite features rather than the wishy-washy bogs and re-entrants that made it hard to gauge how far up the slope I was. As it was I thought I was low but I was actually pretty much on-line and when I saw some bare rock on the side of a hill above me I thought it was my crag but it wasn't and then managed to get myself in a jungle of 6ft bracken before reading the map properly. After that things definitely picked up and I really enjoyed the variety of terrain and route choice on the course :) Came 2nd.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [3]

As well as chasing cars round parking fields for over 5hours... Think I must have said about 800 good-mornings!

Orienteering race 32:49 [5]

Oban 2011 - Day 2
Ardnaskie
Not a great run, had been looking forward to a speedy middle race but having my early start it was pretty tough going without the tracks which are there later in the day. Big mistake at #3 - was on-line but then misread the vegetation around the control and decided I was meant to be 100m further north; I sometimes get a bit reluctant to read the map carefully if it means I have to slow down when I feel the terrain is already making me slower than I want to be going. Something I need to watch out for in future. Also lost quite a bit of time at #9 where again I didnt take enough time to read the map whilst ploughing through bracken and dense trees. Came 4th.

Orienteering race 47:52 [5]

Oban 2011 - Day 1
Dunollie and Dunstaffnage
A pretty good run, just keeping contact all the way and trying to make sure I took the most runnable route choices with respect to undergrowth and hills.
#1 - Hit the top of the 100m long crag and went the long way round it to try and get down. Lost 1min30.
#4 - Wrong side of bush. Lost 5secs.
#7 - Accidentally navigated to #8 but it was en-route anyway. Ran some extra distance to a crossing point when there was a gate right in front of me that I was allowed to cross but didnt realise at the time. Lost 40secs.
Total time loss: 2min15.
Was a bit surprised to be 1st, at the time it felt like going to #8 instead of #7 was a major blunder, but looking at it now it didn't lose me much time at all and my route choice was considerably faster than the other options for that leg.
